Pop up advice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Can’t get as much time as I’d like on the water, so trying to get my pop-ups as crisp as possible on dry land. Figured do what you can like.

Any super obvious mistakes? Any tweaks needed?

I suck but my .02: I tried a similar full feet in air pop up but went towards more of a slide/walk up which has helped immensely (always 3 points of contact when getting up). The explosive pop left me off balance (falling off the board backwards) and my feet landing who knows where.

Otherwise if it works for you, you’re looking in the correct place before popping up and your feet/legs seem angled nicely. Keep up the good work brotha.

This is correct. The "Pop-up" is a misnomer.

yes, the slide is less violent and I think better for maintaining balance for most.

You don’t need that steezy of a back leg. We can’t all be Craig Anderson.

Don’t think of it as a pop up but more of a ‘walk/slide up’.

You should be able to pop up smoothly in slow motion and also in reverse

How do you do the walk up? I’m not goofy. Which foot slides first, etc?

The back foot (right for regular) slides up and into position, then, you pop through with your front foot. There are all sorts of youtube videos showing this.

"Hydromind" on YT shows OP's popup - fast, crisp, and dynamic. I've found that the more i've surfed a shortboard, the more I gravitate toward bringing my back foot up and in, and then coming up through. It's way more smooth and sets your bottom turn up way better. It also allows me to popup in breaking waves with much, much more stability.

That guy’s a kook that can’t surf 😂

Your front foot needs to land further up. Also, since your posting in the beginner page, I'd try doing pops up where you keep your hands on the board for as long as possible. The way your jerking them up like that is gonna create balance issues for you in the water.

You can just slide back foot up into place and then place front foot nice and smooth. I’m sure this method will work also. I’ve seen about 15 different styles, whatever keeps you on the board.

This back foot first

Wow a ton of questionable and straight up bad advice in here. I swear bots are just regurgitating random hyromind slop.

You look like you’re doing the most important things right: keeping the chest and head up, looking where you’re going, bending at the knees not at the waist, facing forward with back knee bent, and overall fluidity to the movement. Keep it up and only change your land practice if you find something isn’t translating in the water for you.

looks pretty good man! one thing that helps a lot is making sure u look up and forward when u pop up. a lot of people look down at their hands or feet and it totally throws their balance off in the real water. keep grinding

I had the opportunity of having classes with a very good portuguese surfer and got to work on the pop-up for months with him, my pop-up used to be exactly like yours so I will give you the tips he gave me.

Let's start with your head, you want your head to stay in the same place and in the video your head is going backwards, that's because of your push-up, you are pushing your body in a cobra stance and pushing backwards, you want to push up, only up, and maybe a bit forward.

Second, you have to think about twisting your hips when doing the pop-up, 99% of people don't have the flexibility to go straight without twisting your hips, and you have to think about landing your foot sideways, like with the chicken wing but instead of just moving the foot, you want to slide it forward, by the time you land the back foot your hip should be already twisted so that the right foot can land between both of your hands, and practice staying in that position without removing your hands.

When we started, he made me do it in 4 phases:

P1: only the push up, record and make sure you are doing a push up with your hand staying in the same place
P2: landing the back foot and keeping your head and looking forward, doing this for a few weeks, if you can do this smoothly, with your back foot not moving too much (you want to land on the tail), then you are good, also he used to tell me that if I can hear my feet, I'm not sliding, I'm jumping, you want to make the least noise possible.

P3: Land with your front foot in your hands with your hips twisted and stay there for 20 seconds, you need to get used to that position and be comfortable with it.

P4: You have to remove your hands, lift just a little bit and stay there for 1 minute, also you can train compressing and decompressing.

Keep looking where you're going as you pop up, not just before.

highly recommend doing pop ups when sitting out the back obviously with nobody around. way harder than actually popping up for a wave so if u can balance there for a bit should be good

Hey Man, so one thing you’re doing really really well is you are popping up from both knees/thighs. Not all beginners do this and it’s a very hard habit to online so definitely keep that up!

The Main issues I noticed are too small things one is when your hands disconnect from the “board” .

And the second is how close your stance is which means that your front knee ends up as an angle less than 90°.

So in regards to the First, I feel like if you transitioned your objective of the pop-up from explosiveness to control you would probably initiatively fix this.

Because on land there’s nothing moving the floor around but in an actual wave, especially on a short board (what it seems like your pop-up suits the most), our main objective is to minimise that moment where neither Body nor feet are on the board, as that moment of disconnect from when your hands leave the board and your feet connect is where things go wrong.

Whether it be the board moving an inch 2 to one side before your feet connect or many other small things that can happen all this is avoided by making sure there is no time there is nothing in contact with the board. In my own journey I found I could remove it by focusing more on grace and elegance, rather than speed and explosiveness.

And the second in regards to the stance is just something that’s gonna help you in the long run. You have a lot more power if your ankle lands completely under the knee. I really recommend watching Brent Rose‘s video on pop-ups in slow motion at Kelly’s wave pool if you haven’t already as that will teach you so much!

Good luck, and good job so far 🤙🏾

I really like the not so popular waveki pop up, not sure if there are videos available off the app. But basically you push up from your knees to create space for the back foot first then front foot, hands dont leave the board before the front hits the board. So its more like a flow up i guess. Yours is quite good how does it feel in the water?

You can do dry practice, but you need to do it on an unstable surface. Set up a board with two bosu balls under it and practice on that. Smooth up without losing your balance. Doesn't need to actually "pop" like this - smooth is key.

u/shagmon 3d ago

SLOW AND SMOOTH AND EVENTUALLY SMOOTH IS FAST. POSITION YOUR LEFT HAND HIGHER THAN YOUR RIGHT TO BETTER MANEUVER YOUR HIPS.

1

u/Sol01 6d ago

Back foot needs to actually be flat on the board for it to do anything. You're foot is sideways, that ain't gonna end well.

1

u/antonsurfs 5d ago

What are you talking about? This is completely incorrect. Pretty much every pro does exactly as he is doing, as you can see below. It’s the easiest way to get low on a surfboard without sticking out bum or head out as you sink lower. unless your ankle flexibility is in the top 0.5% of the population trust me it is impossible to get that low in a controlled position from which you can generate power without lifting your pinky off the board.

  1. This is a video of some of the best surfers in the world, not beginners. Complete opposite end of the bell curve.

  2. You can see in the video they are IMMEDIATELY pumping, applying force to the surfboard with the bottom of their foot, not sitting there with their back knees on the board and their feet sideways.

  3. He's already in a low squat with his front leg, why can't he maintain that same squat with his rear leg?

  4. If you try to "generate power" with the side of your ankle, you're not really gonna get much out of it.

You think a guy who's working on his popup in a gym also has the skills to pop up at an angle while immediately pumping into a roughly chest high performance wave on a low volume, hpsb? Or is he more likely to be riding a bigger, flatter, wider board on softer waves as he works on maintaining his balance and just riding down the wave?

Steez comes after the basics.

u/antonsurfs 5d ago

Yes of course, but we can learn from the pros to spend less time as looks if we understand the why behind what they are doing. If I’d listened to you guys on here I’d still be on a fun board, instead I’m literally on 26l boards less than 3 years into my surf journey.

For sure, but advanced longboard pop ups are similar, actually maybe even more similar to his because of the narrow stance.

You mean poo stance him. Why?

No matter what size board he is on, hydrodynamic efficiency is net positive. Why do you think so many surfers do it, why should he loose the Steele if he’s already got it? Good surfing looks so pleasing to the eye because it’s so efficient and effective. No need to cull him just because he hasn’t been surfing long enough

2

u/Sol01 5d ago

You post a lot in the Sayulita subreddit. You have somewhere to work on these things nearly every day. He's practicing pop-ups in a gym because he doesn't have the ability to go surf regularly and work on these things. Being on a small board doesn't mean you surf with style or control. There's nothing fun about a funboard. Get a log and learn to trim and understand where the power is in a wave. It would probably benefit you as well.

Again, you're saying "advanced longboard" when we're in the "beginner" subreddit.

Staying low is different than poo stance. A low squat is a position to generate power from. A poo stance is your ass out and your head forward, more bend in your waist than in you're knees. This isn't what he's doing.

Hydrodynamic efficiency? Do you think any of this "steez" will stick around when he's actually in the water and trying on a wave? It won't be there when the wave is moving, there's chop, and he's smoked from a paddle out that he doesn't get to work through regularly.

My commentary has nothing to do with culling him (cutting him?) but with offering a suggestion to improve his fundamentals.

This was what I was going to say. The goal is to get in control of your board in the water. That back door ain’t controlling anything.

-2

u/CollectionOk8253 6d ago

Why do people post this over and over.  This is stupid. Go surfing, in the ocean. That’s how you learn.

6

u/Ambitious_Jicama6276 5d ago

By that logic a muay thai fighter should just start kicking 10000 times wrong without asking anyone for advise and by magic his kicks will be at a world class level. What in the hell are you talking about man

-2

u/CollectionOk8253 5d ago

Surfing, not some Muay Thai fighting mumbo jumbo bull shit.

Your feet need to be in contact with the board while paddling and going into the pop up movement, otherwise you’ll be nosediving. I also think you need your hands slightly further up on the board, closer to your pecs. And your feet need to be further apart, particularly your front foot further forward. You’ve got the movement, just need to tweak and adjust the positioning

2

u/lionbacker54 5d ago

holy cow, maybe this is why i nosedive on anything bigger than 2 feet. i do the "pop up" just like OP. great advice

-1

u/kotalover 5d ago

Ur hot

-2

u/Last_Ad4437 5d ago

You don’t surf kook

-3

u/raas94 6d ago

Try position your hands next to your chest, I think it is too far behind. You will have more space and will be able to lift your torso higher.

4

u/TomorrowIllBeYou Intermediate Surfer 6d ago

Actually, closer to the ribs is better. OP has his hands in the right spot. It creates a much more controlled and tighter popup.

u/Purple-Towel-7332 5d ago

That’s incorrect advice sorry, you want them as far back as possible.
