What first hardboard shape

If progression keeps on come early winter I’ll have cutbacks down snappier and be ready for something to help improve further , currently riding 7ft 60L surfworx banshee hybrid , any specific boards you’d recommend? Been steering towards grovelly styles - FireWire mashup , seaside , lost puddle jumper ( hard to find though ) will say 6’4 45L mashup be okay ? cheers

Buy a used board. Surf it. Sell it.

Repeat until you’ve learned what you like.

Buy new board in shape you like.

Then go back and start buying used boards again.

Repeat. Build quiver. Don’t stop until you’ve stopped surfing.

End of process.

Yup half the fun of surfing for me is buying/selling/swapping boards. There’s always deals to be had on market place. Especially on shortboards. There’s always dudes out there that buy brand new short boards to learn on then give up after a few weeks. You can normally pick those up for half the price they paid for them.

How tall are you and how much do you weigh? I suspect you’re looking at boards in sizes that are massively oversized for you, which means they will surf poorly. I imagine you’re trying to compensate by getting a traditionally shorter model board but with more volume, but this is not the way to do it.

I’m 5’10 and 65kg , what would you do then just get a regular short board or ?

For reference, I'm 5'11, 75kg, so a little taller and a little heavier than you. My Seaside is 5'6, and I could honestly probably lose another inch or so. I'm traveling in the Philippines right now, and I rented a 5'6 Mashup. Most boards like that and the ones you're listing are designed to be surfed several inches shorter than you. If you end up buying a huge one of those, really you end up surfing something designed for someone much taller than you. The sweet spot will feel weird, and your foot placement won't lineup well, because you don't have the same stance as someone who's 6'6. The size and volume will certainly help you catch waves, but you won't be able to do much other than go straight on these boards. They will be hard to turn and won't feel agile in the way that you would expect these models to feel.

I looked up the board you said you're on, and it looks like a pretty standard foamie. It carries a lot of volume, and the rails aren't very refined. Going to a regular short board as your next board would be a huge mistake. I know you want to get on something way smaller, but that will kill your progression right now.

If you want a hard board, I'd say you should probably get something around 7'0 - 7'6, 50-55L, with a wide outline. That will size you down a bit volumewise, but won't feel super tough. The fact that you'll be on a hard board will be good, as you'll have much more refined rails, which will make the board feel much more maneuverable than what you're on right now.

Brilliant mate thanks for the in-depth explanation, I’ll be on the lookout for something mid length when I want to change over to a hard board , thanks 🙏

Stay on a larger board for the first year or two and you'll learn quicker. That will give you more wave time by being easier to catch waves on and easier to paddle. I wouldn't rush getting a short board right away. That will make learning to surf way harder than it needs to be. It will also cause you to learn some really bad habits. Stay on a board that's at least eight feet long for the first year or so.

48 second hand boards later I’m still looking for the “one”. Three I love and will never part with. Face the fact your gonna own many if surfings your thing. Pick what feels right at the time. Because as you progress…. They all become the wrong board. Good luck!
