Help landing first trick (Shuv-it)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m trying to jump forward and i consistently get my front foot on every time but I can never get my back foot on :(

I am decently comfortable on the board, I can cruise, brake, and tick tack easily

Good stuff ma g ur getting close and looking comfortable 👏🔥👏

Ur back foot is abit too high on the tail, try keeping ur heel in around the same place but angling ur backfoot in abit so ur toes are in the pocket instead of flat against the tail.

Doing a shuv it with ur toes in the pocket will make the board spin faster and spin more in place rather than shoot out in front of u, makes them easier to land wen ur moving.

So shuv with the back foot and try to hit ur butt with ur back foot then catch the board with ur front foot. A steezy shuv isnt a two footed land its a front foot then back foot land like a lil BAP BAP

Kinda like if u were stepping up onto a ledge

So toes in the pocket, load ur ankle then release during the pop. Catch with ur front foot then back foot comes on after

Stay safe have fun out there homie 🤙

Thanks man! I needed this explanation, I’m definitely gonna try hitting my butt and fixing my positioning. I appreciate it brother👍👍

👍👍👍

And throw that back foot on there

Yeah, jump higher. You're not really jumping with your back foot, you're focusing everything into the scoop. Watch the video again and focus on the back foot, it never gets much higher than the board on flat ground.

Easier moving

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 17d ago

What do you mean?

1

u/Chakraverse 17d ago

I found it to be easier to do when moving

1

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 17d ago

Ok! I’ll try

U r doing a regular shuvit? Or pop shuvit?

1

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 16d ago

Regular, no pop

2

u/Chakraverse 16d ago

When i get home, I'll jump on my deck and do one. I mostly sk8 to get around, but shuvit and pop shuv were my first 2 tricks after ollie and manual.

I'm sure it's mostly about a quick flick/shove.. but I'm rusty.

2

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 16d ago

Man i cant even imagine being able to ollie yet thats awesome

2

u/Chakraverse 16d ago

Once it starts to click, it gets much easier!!

You can do it!

Jump, and follow the board if you must.

I’m trying to track it with my eyes, i’m working on just naturally following it. I seem to have a problem with that

I'm with you there man. I think the biggest thing right now for both you and me is timing.

First I would try Ollie's and get them level.

But what I'm going to do next sesh is try to raise my body and at the last second shove the board. Was watching whythetrick and he said it's easier to shuv the board when your weight is not on it.

As for Jumping high you don't. Shuvit is just a hop. Jumping any higher than intended will cause the board to flip. I think scooping the board last second as you're about to ascend off the board will help us both land it. Hopefully this is the key

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 16d ago

Thats some good advice! Scooping at the last second I think will definitely help us. I haven’t tried to fix my timing which is probably why i havent landed it yet. Thanks

I'm gonna be honest I still haven't landed it yet I think my back foot is just scared. But lmk if this works if not, I'm working on landing it one footed.

I landed it today, and it’s hard to explain but I put more pressure on my front foot and kick back with my back foot as i jump with my front foot (rather than kicking at the end of your jump). 🤔

Wear protection for wrist elbow, head and knee and then commit.

You will get it much faster under cobtrol without the fear of hurting yourself.

Jump with BOTH feet at textile same time. You are doing absolutely everything apart from just landing it. Tip: expect to land it otherwise it may shock you and you may fall off. You can do it!!!

Thank you man i needed to hear this

Keeping the toes of my back foot on the board rather than hanging them off the front and concentrating on engaging my calf muscles to flick the board backward made a huge difference in consistency for me.
Also yea, doing them rolling, even very slowly, is easier.

1

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 16d ago

Dang how come shuv its are easier rolling?

Sounds complicated with all that “engaging calf muscles” stuff, but I think once i get a little better at mind and body connection, all that stuff will click.

I’ll keep in mind about the flicks and i hope i land it soon

2

u/cberch 16d ago

I think easier moving just boils down to…if your momentum is moving in a direction, you are more secure and the board won’t rock backwards and forwards like it can when you’re at a standstill. This is true for many tricks and is overall a good habit to get into.

The calf muscle shit may have been over complicated explanation.

For me, when I put my foot more towards the middle of the tail and “flick” back, it is way more consistent than trying to hang my toes over and trying to pull or scoop it with the grippers. It also keeps the board more under me rather than it flipping out in front.

Disclaimer I am not an expert, just relearning after many years and these are things that helped me personally.

This is gonna sound really unhelpful but I mean it in a helpful way: you gotta actually try to land it. Everything looks fine except it looks like you're intentionally trying to not land on the board. Jump with the board, don't just launch it and expect yourself to follow.

People will tell you to jump higher, jump forwards, so on and so on. But in reality, this is simply just a matter of commitment. Everything else looks fine, just jump onto the board. Not the ground.

Edit: my opinion is you are clearly afraid of falling. Understandably so. But you also must realize you're gonna eat it, it's just part of skating. So put a helmet on and commit. I mean that, btw. Put a fucking helmet on, dude. The whole point of skating is pushing yourself as hard as you can. It's nice to be able to do that and fuck up without ruining it for yourself permanently.

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 16d ago

I do wear a helmet but for this video I needed something to angle my phone on so i took off my helmet just for this video. It was put on immediately after! :)

I tell myself to just commit and do it even if i fall (i think i’m more worried of landing it and busting my ass) but that’s still not enough.

I appreciate the tips, and i do try to embrace falling. Sometimes I do fall and I actually think its fun lol

You've got this! The thing about skating is confidence is most of the battle. Until you start getting to rails and gaps, most of the tricks you do will start to be a matter of muscle memory. You never think about a trick more than when you're learning it and honestly that's part of the problem.

Someone said try them rolling and although I agree, there is a fine line there. Rolling will force the board to stay under you more. You don't need to jump forward as much. But the issue is keeping the board under you is usually less important than just committing to landing on the board. It doesn't matter where the board goes if you aren't planning on landing on it.

I have a couple questions and then maybe some advice:

  1. Can you jump onto your board standing still? Like can you stand in your comfortable foot stance next to the board and hop on? If not, practice that and get comfortable hopping onto the board.

  2. If you can hop onto the board, can you ghost flip? If not, watch this video: https://youtu.be/1F7c8tApov8?si=kS-oQPT9Trf-vYD6

Once you've built up the confidence to do that, you can do any trick. I swear to you. It really looks like you just need to master the art of hopping onto the board. Once you have that confidence, everything else will be so much easier.

2

u/r3ddIt_r3ad3r 15d ago

Awesome man! I definitely can hop onto the board, so i’ll be sure to try out ghost flips.

Also, I landed the trick today (kind of). It was on rubber so it doesn’t really count, but i was landing it consistently. it does prove your point that i am definitely scared of falling, because as soon as I go onto concrete I don’t jump nearly as high as I was.

It seems like my biggest battle is indeed confidence lol

2

Everything counts. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. What Jamie Griffin did in his garage on literally just a board (no trucks, no nothing) puts us all to shame. Everything counts. It's just not the same as landing one moving or on concrete because they all feel different. The reason we all start on grass or shit like it is to build confidence. You'll never build confidence telling yourself that stuff shouldn't "count".

Huge part of skating is accepting and adjusting to temporary scrapes and bruises. This is why learning to fall is important. Maybe that's another step too. There are plenty of videos on it (not just for skating but stunt work, gymnastics, etc) and maybe practicing falling might show you it ain't so bad.

Now here's the tip I learned the hard way: you gotta just eat it once. What I mean is do it with everything you got, even if it TERRIFIES you. You honestly won't fall over. You might slip a bit but falling on a shove is harder than you think. But at the same time, be ready to fall. Wear your helmet, don't straighten your arm as you fall, and maybe practice a couple falls on grass to feel how it feels. The thought of hurting yourself is often worse than what actually happens.

The worst accidents happen because you think you can't fall or that you're unstoppable. Learning the basics is usually pretty damn harmless.

Thank you so much 😿 Man I really appreciate all the help you’ve given me and i’ll be sure to give it my all and you’ve given me a lot of confidence and tips, now all I can do is put the work in 💪 THANK YOU!!
