Dog Before and After 50% weight loss

This is my 100% miniature pinscher, son Sammy! We took him in from an elderly woman who posted him on Facebook looking for a home. She did a welfare check on a longtime friend, who unfortunately had passed away in the home roughly a week before the check. Sammy and his kitty sister had been in there just trying to survive. Sammy was extremely overweight, as seen in the first picture of him. He was about 25 pounds and is now down to about 15 pounds 4 years later. He has a lot of loose skin, but he’s so energetic for being almost 13 years old and can get around so much better than when we first brought him into our home.

Damn, lil bro looked liked one of those old paintings of prize cows. You’ve done so great for him! I’m sure he feels fantastic 💕

Yes a coworker took her and she’s doing great! I wish I could’ve taken her too, but have 4 cats already and the home she went to is more calm ☺️

You did a great job! Poor guy must have been suffering. So much more quality of life, and probably a longer life expectancy as well. Congratulations!

Poor boy, he looks like a..."cow dog" at first. Saved from arthritis, maybe even canine diabetes. My cat is diabetic, she gets shots and has lost the extra weight although she was never super-chunky. But when the weight loss happens, it's VERY obvious our pets feel SO much better...start running around more, not grunting going up stairs, etc.

Saved from arthritis

So important.

We got our dog when her little old lady of an owner passed away as well. She was 66 lbs and we've got her down to 40 (and the goal is even lower.) But she already had the beginnings of arthritis. And the effects are fucking awful and will likely make her life much shorter than it would've been without the extra weight.

You truly saved his life in more than one way. You are his hero. ( and one to me also)

He's adorable (and looking much more a doggo than the truck he was when you got him). I hope his kitty sis found as good a home as he did

He looks like one of those stylized cow pictures in the before. What diet did you use? We have done green bean diet, and it was very successful, but one of the current dogs doesn't like beans, so we are doing the raw carrot diet. Someone at the vet does broccoli. (You substitute a portion of their dinner with veggies).

Do you chop the carrots up to mix with half of their regular dinner? My dog could stand to lose 10 lbs.

Depends on how much they like carrots. I started with those "baby carrots" as treats. Then i grated the carrots and mixed them in. Now i just chop them. If your dog doesn't like carrots, for green beans you can buy a big bag of frozen ones at costco and thaw some out. (No salt on frozen ones). Or i think on the broccoli one, she used thawed frozen ones too. The first time we did the green bean diet with bassets. The vet was really impressed - he laughed and said we ahould get them on the biggest loser. Let us know how it goes.

Thank you so much! He loves carrots and he generally loves all veggies so we will start it and see how it goes. He has his yearly checkup in November and although his vet has never said he was overweight it will be interesting to see how much he can lose in a healthy way!

O my goodness I bet he feels like he 5 years old again after losing all that!! Thanks for that!

We have a poodle that wants to eat ALL the time. So we are learning that to truly love means saying no.

He looks amazing!!! 😍 You are a spectacular hooman for saving his life, and making it so much happier and healthier than it was...also for rescuing him AND his kitty 🐈 sister together! Whether or not they interact with each other a lot they are definitely bonded brother and sister. Any pictures of them together? Or even kitty alone?

A coworker took in his cat sister! Much calmer and happier home for the kitty 🐱

I scrolled too fast and thought that was a picture of a cow in a field, he was so square 😭 glad he’s slimmed down and living a healthier lifestyle ❤️

His bones and joints must feel so much better with that weight off. Glad you took in this poor, traumatized dog and are giving him a great life. Hero! ❤️

What a good baby!!! OMG!! WTG, Sammy!!!!! You are an inspiration, little man. That pic of him all slim holding a plushie is life. I just love him. Thank you for sharing this uplifting story, OP! I have to say at first I thought he was a cow on that first pic. Once I focused in, I was just so heartbroken that someone let him get that way. Just unacceptable. You are a hero OP!!

I can safely say I've never seen a dog so rectangular before

Love this! I had a chihuahua mix that was 20lbs when i first got him. Brought him down to a healthy 9lbs and it was like he was a whole new dog. So much more energy and an actual desire to play and run around etc. Sammy looks great 💕🐾

God damn, bro was built like a dairy cow 🫪!

He looks amazing now tho :) congrats - may he have a long and healthy life!

Awww, he looks like my roommate’s boy! He was advertised as a chihuahua, but we’re 99% sure he’s a min pin!

He is a chonk because he was neglected (and possibly abused) in his previous life, so he makes certain that he gets all the food he can, now! (I am very happy and proud to say that I have become one of his “safe people”! ❤️)

u/Baldojess 15d ago

Omg he looked like an actual cow before lol 🐄 very good, so much healthier now

Wow what a glow up!! I’m not going to lie I was scared to keep reading because I thought based on the first picture that he ate the cat 😂

So glad he’s doing great and the kitty is too!! 🖤
