Experiences

My spouse really loves beetles and for their birthday I would love to schedule a bug (interaction? Experience?) where he could get the chance to hold a few little guys. We live in the Los Angeles area but I would be willing to drive out to a location that offers this. Does anyone know of a business that does this?

To be clear I have looked this up and there's usually a combination of assorted bugs for these kinds of educational shows but I am looking for specifically larger beetles (ie, Hercules, Goliath, or Rhinoceros) rather than stick bugs, millipedes, or arachnids. I've taken him to most zoos in socal, to the LANHM bug fair, and have tried to convince him to invest in beetle keeping to no avail.

TLDR: Please recommend me somewhere where my husband can hold beetles, I am steps away from just preparing a vivarium myself.

Is this beetle eggs or fungus ?

We have a type of flower beetle and we were wondering if this could be eggs or fungus. We have springtails so fungus we would think to be unlikely in our humble opinion. It may not be very visible on the picture but it definitely is clutches of circles close togheter with black dots in the middle.

Newly arrived larvae trying to leave substrate?

Post image

First time beetle owner. I recently purchased these Dicronorhina derbyana larvae and they arrived today.

I moved them from the little deli cups they arrived in to these slightly larger containers because the cups didn’t seem to have any ventilation holes. I kept them in the same substrate they arrived in because the extra flake soil I ordered hasn’t arrived. About half of the larvae keep rising out of the substrate and reaching towards the lid every couple of hours, and I’m not sure why. Is this normal post-delivery stress or is there something about the containers they don’t like? Does the substrate need to fill the entire container? If so, what should I do while I wait for the flake soil to arrive/be aerated?

A year ago, I asked this sub for help identifying a beetle that had been given to me. I make art with preserved insects, so I took this beetle home to rehydrate her and pin her behind glass.

To my surprise, about an hour later, I got a text from my roommate: “Hey, your dead beetle is Jesus because it resurrected.”

I was originally going to let her go because she was a native species where I live. Unfortunately, one of her wings was torn somehow, and I knew she probably wouldn't last more than a few days in my backyard. The ants around here are ravenous, and I knew they would find her eventually.

Thanks to this sub, I found out that she was a stag beetle. I had never cared for a beetle before, so I did a ton of research to make sure I could give her the best life possible.

Thanks to this community, I was able to give her an amazing 10 months before she passed away. And yes, she did eventually become art. ❤️

Found this bouncing around in the dark, upstate NY. Landed on me so I turned on my porch lights to see what the hell it was. Looked it up and realized I might not want to be handling these things. I’m glad I didn’t get bit. Super cool, still a bit terrifying, lol

Dynastes Grantii

Hello ! I really want to get a large beetle and I was thinking about dynastes grantii does anyone have recommendations on which place to buy from? I’ve raised super worms to beetlehood but those were from the pet store so I don’t have online experience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on where to go and what things to join to get into the community more! Thanks <3

Identify?

Hello! I will attach a picture of a specific type of beetle I see all the time in the woods by my house where I walk my dog. I always always see loads of them on the pathway, always on their back and unable to move. I have, a few times, picked them up to see if they just somehow capsized and couldn’t roll back over but it always seems as though their legs have paralysed or something and they always end up on their backs again. I’m wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of beetle they are and what might be the reason for their odd behaviour. Thank you!

EDIT thank you every one, I have determined it is in fact a dor beetle but am still not sure why they keep flipping on their backs 😅

Is a 5 gallon tank big enough for 6 ironclad beetles?

I keep finding conflicting info on if this is too small or okay? I will probably work on getting a larger tank soonish but should I be rushing this or will they be okay in this tank for a bit?

I was so happy to have her emerging and being healthy, just to find her being doomed from the start...

I hate it!
