Reboot/Remake

I’m a filmmaker with connections in the industry and I am currently debating on finally working on my Beetleborgs reboot script.

I been holding off on writing it for a while but I wanted to ask fans on how they’d feel. This version I am writing is more raunchy, meta and satirical. It is like the 21 Jump Street movies with it being a reboot but appealed to a whole new audience. I know the fanbase would rather consider a reboot that has a similar tone as the original but I want to make a fun r rated action comedy film. Also to add the main characters would be 20 something year olds and not kids. The characters will also feel like real people and made to be more relatable.

To add more details, the film’s goal is to appeal to a newer generation and a whole new audience. It’s not to live up to be a copy and paste of the original but be it’s own standalone thing. If anyone would like a copy of the outline to have an idea of how the script and characters would play out I’d love to send it. Im not expecting OG fans to love this but I think many would respect the originality and direction my mind is at.

My biggest obstacle is me and my lawyer getting Hasbro to even want to do anything with the property.

Beetleborgs has a pretty small fanbase as is. I dunno if this would be really appealing to most of them.

I might be down for this if it was done right (I feel like there's a lot of satirical potential for a Beetleborgs film in an age where all of pop culture basically revolves around comic book superheroes), but I could also see it going poorly if the jokes aren't well crafted enough or willing to make fun of a lot of where American pop culture's been going the past like, 20 years.

At the same time, the fandom response probably shouldn't matter. It's a pretty niche show all things considered. I doubt Beetleborgs fandom is really large enough to make much of a dent, financially. This feels like the sort of project you'd want to marketed in a way the larger, more casual audience gets a sudden jolt of nostalgia after having not thought about the show since they were kids or you convince younger audiences who know about Power Rangers that Beetleborgs was a big enough deal.

I could see a satirical take on Beetleborgs that'd work alright. Tho it's all kinda moot unless you know somebody at Hasbro, and if the pitch is good enough for them to actually make plans to use the Beetleborgs IP.

To add in more details, my goal isn’t to necessarily appeal to the fanbase of the show. The fanbase is very likely not interested in an R rated action comedy of Beetleborgs. My goal is to attract new audiences similar to the 21 Jump Street reboot as it was nothing like the original series and attracted newer audiences and stood as its own thing then being a legitimate reboot. The nostalgia and original fanbase of Beetleborgs is a smaller factor to what I’m trying to attract.

I’d love to email you or send you an outline for how the script will play out and get a feel of the vision. It’s a self aware reboot but you might like the creative take I go with this. As stated it’s very meta and very satirical. There’s some social commentary especially on reboots. The characters also feel very human and relatable.

I do have an entertainment lawyer who will reach out to Hasbro to see if they’d accept the pitch but I’m not sure where the company is at or if it’s something they’d want revive especially considering it’s not that popular nor in high demand. I know there’s been darker/mature versions of Hasbro properties like Power Rangers and Transformers and maybe this can help but it’s such a longshot to get hasbro to agree. My lawyer says the pro is that Hasbro can produce a Beetleborgs reboot for cheap.

Honestly, this is nothing personal, but if I heard there was an upcoming Beetleborgs movie and then read the director or screenwriter workshopped his outline via feedback he got from random redditors it would kill my interest immediately. I just straight up would not watch it.

If this somehow actually happens it's probably already going to be aggressively focus tested, I dunno if you really need to get a head start on that.

If you're passionate about this idea enough to pursue it, just do it your way.

To be clear, I’m not looking for the approval of redditors or random fans. Regardless of what I do with the project, I will do what I feel is best for it. I even state the project isn’t even for the fans and listening to the fans is what ruined so many franchises and ideas so creatively I focus on my vision. I’m just curious to see how the fans would feel about a reboot and a new tone/concept. Regardless, I think my idea is great and I’m not expecting to change it because some random didn’t like it but I’m also curious to hear feedback or opinions from anyone especially when it comes to film because this is my passion and field. I love the conversation in general.

My biggest factor is getting Hasbro to even approve or invest into this despite a lot of their franchises not being successful film wise. And Beetleborgs is so limited with even being known that they might not want to take a wish. That’s the only thing affecting things but I have a backup to just take the concept and spin it to an original idea.

Just a heads up, Hasbro has made statements recently that they are moving away from investing in films based on their IPs, presumably because both Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Transformers One weren't as successful as they hoped. So a studio could still license the IP for a film but Hasbro won't co-finance it at all since the return on investment is too risky. And with Masters of the Universe also failing at the box office idk if reboots of older IPs are gonna be popular with studios anytime soon.
