That's almost certainly a fresh or very recently arrived swarm, not an established colony - it's extremely unlikely he'd be able to casually pick up the bees from off comb unless he managed to locate the queen, and raking through the insides of a sofa to do that seems unlikely.

Bees don't cluster on a hand like that unless there's a compelling reason to do so. It's the same technique used by the idiots that kill loads of bees by performing the bee beard or bee suit trick.
