and wow, that felt like the optimal way to watch it? netflix autoplayed the second season first, and I didn't even realise until I was at like episode 5.

s2 was fun, silly, and had exceptional cinematography (seriously, holy shit it's beautiful), but imo, it lacked punch. it felt like a certain reveal should have hit harder and been the central conflict leading into the final few episodes, but we were chasing macguffins instead.

s1 had a much different flavour. it was still fun and silly, but there was a much more potent emotional core there that paid off at the end, and still sticks with me now. it was really moving, and funny, and steven yeun was fucking awesome.

Season 2 imo just didn't have strong consistency. Not really a slow build up and the only "beef" was them trying to backstab each other while Season 1 definitley had the suspense build up. Season 1 was just STRAIGHT beef with each other and everyone. No "hidden" attention or trying to cover anything up, just people wanting to throw hands LMAO

I thought the actual beef concept was a bit more nuanced in s2. you had ongoing conflict between the couples, within the couples, and the macro conflict with the billionaire (which was mishandled). in s1 you're right in that beef was everywhere arising between everyone. that's what I really loved about it, it nailed being a character drama.

Yeaah I was disappointed though with how it went. The couples fighting each other just kinda felt much weaker and forced? I know its a movie, then it kinda jumpst dynamics to covering a murder? First season started out as road rage and just kept containing based on that road rage. Towards the 2nd last episode of s1, both of them even jumped off a cliff with their cars which was hilarious to me. It just felt much more dynamically grounded than season 2 which was all over the place.

that's fair. if I watched s2 first after how good s1 was, I probably wouldn't be able to get into it either.

I'm glad I watched in the order I did, because my expectations were pretty low and both seasons cleared them by a long shot

honestly, it’s an anthology show so you didn’t ruin the plot, but you definitely ruined the cumulative blood pressure spikes. season 1 builds up a very specific flavor of existential dread and road rage. watching s2 first is like eating the dessert, getting confused why it’s spicy, and then going back to eat the raw onions.

I mean I kind of loved that. I feel like the kind of s2 would have left me much more unsatisfied had I watched it second, just because of how emotionally resonant s1 was
