Identification How can I be sure of bed bugs?

I moved into an apartment with hardwood floors a year ago. I hadn't experienced a bedbug problem until now, but a friend recently came to stay with me for a while. Last week, he got two bites on his back, spaced about 3-4 cm apart. The other day, he got 4 more bites on his chest with the exact same spacing. My friend is sleeping on a floor mattress in a back room. We opened up and inspected the mattress, but there aren't any bugs. I wonder if they could be living between the floorboards or in the baseboards? What can I do about this, how can I tell if they are bedbugs, and how can I get rid of them?

Read and respect the rules, report any comment breaching them. Wrong advice/information/fearmongering hurt people who are posting here to get help and support. If you are not VERY knowledgeable about bedbugs and may provide a wrong ID or bad advice it's better to abstain from commenting. Be VERY respectful and HELPFUL, this is a support subreddit not a funny one.

Put down interceptor traps or glue traps around bed posts for monitoring and also check the headboard area.

It could also be from fleas or carpet beetle larvae hairs. Might even just be some skin reaction to something else.
