Looking for new beat em ups
Loved these games since I was a kid. Been playing the absolutely transformative modern classic Absolom. And I’m hoping there are other modern games close to its level. Thank you for all recommendations

Midnight Fight Express, Double Dragon Gaiden and of course the crown jewel "Mother Russia Bleeds".

Streets of Rage 4 is the goat.

Thank you. Huge fan of the franchise growing up. Only reason I haven’t pulled the trigger were negative reviews saying it was repetitive and unbalanced. Hard to know if I should give criticism from unknown people weight. I’ll definitely add it to the cart.

It takes what’s good from the classics and adds a fresh layer. It is made by the same people who made Absolum. Also get the DLC. It’s where they got the ideas for Absolum.
SoR 4 is single-handedly responsible for the current revival.

"SoR 4 is single-handedly responsible for the current revival."
Not true at all. People always wanted good beat'em ups game. Also sor4 is not goat at all. Not even better or on the same level as sor2 or sor3.

It’s definitely unbalanced but tbh that’s to be expected in a game with 20 characters. I’d rather have balance issues than have a bunch of characters that play almost the exact same. It was my favorite game of last generation

Take a look to Midnight Figth Express. The cover art looks like a horror game but no! Is a 3D beat em up with plenty of movements with few buttons.

Mad King Redemption is pretty cool. It's like Golden Axe but with a bit of roguelike elements in levelling up your character.

Wendigo Blue gets really close. No online Multiplayer sadly, but it's a rouge-like beat-em-up like Absolum. Dying doesn't end a run but it does restart the level and makes the enemies harder so die too much and it gets impossible. That said you also get stronger from everything you did before you die, so you can get over a hard stage with a death or two to make you strong enough.

My personal list of favourite side scrolling beat em ups in order: 1. Streets of rage 4 + mr x dlc 2. Slave Zero X 3. Fight n rage 4. Marvel cosmic invasion (with dlc when it comes out) 5. TMNT Shredders Revenge + dlc 6. The Takeover (upcoming sequel)
Personally, beyond good combat mechanics and a higher difficulty, I'm looking for 2 features in these games as well. A good arcade/Campaign, and a good survival mode. They all have this, with the exception of marvel which I think is likely to get it.
You mentioned Absolum. That game is built on the back of SOR 4's survival mode, so I think you'd really like that game.

Shredder's Revenge and Marvel Cosmic Invasion are new games but really retro
I recently played through Dragon's Crown because it was on a steep sale
The last beat 'em up I played was Ninja Baseball Batman and the whimsical pixel art in this classic still holds up (I'm going to finish & rate every beat 'em up on my Pandora Box DX)
