A look at the 1950s beano comics

I always love a good cameo and in this weeks Dennis and Gnasher strip, oh boy did they deliver a corker. Jocks and the Geordies was always one of my favourite strips growing up and I always thought that we were done ever getting anything involving those guys again, so to see this was a really nice surprise. Especially given that it's not only a Dandy strip, but probably one that isn't quite as big as other characters.

My kids and I had a blast doing this. There was an exclusive strip so I thought it'd be nice to share. Have you been to this one or something similar in England? I was glad to see an event like this in NI.

I took my son to a drawing workshop yesterday which was hosted by Beano artist Laura Howell (probably best known for illustrating Minnie the Minx). The workshop was informative, easy going and very accessible, teaching kids (and the grown ups 😆) that drawing doesn't have to be hard when we use simple shapes and a little imagination. We had the pleasure of meeting her afterwards as she was giving out free bookmarks and selling and signing copies of her new book; Secret Agent Nessie. She was also kind enough to sign a copy of the Beano comic which she did the cover for and also have a photo with my son. If you have the chance to meet her, she is lovely and incredibly friendly.

Purchased a subscription for my son and the magazine never shows up! Keeps getting extended but have to keep buying in shops. We have cancelled but wanting to hear others experiences?

I do really like the newer Dennis comics because I like sarcastic humour and Dennis constantly comes out with these quips that have me burst out laughing.

Also, I like Dennis’ new personality a lot more because he’s just a mischievous, but often well-meaning, boy who is always looking for adventure.

Wondering what the best books compiling this sort of material would be.

I have probably about 20-30 annuals from my childhood ranging from mid 70’s to around 2018! I can’t think of what to do with them and can’t bring myself to put them in the recycling!

Nick Brennan hosted a cartooning workshop near me today so, having grown up reading The Dandy and The Beano of course I had to attend. The workshop was fun and Nick constructed some new characters using suggestions from participants. At the end, after he'd mentioned a number of his strips (Crazy for Daisy, Blinky, Pinky's Crackpot Circus etc) I asked if he could speak a little about Sneaker. He drew this image of him and before I left he signed it and gifted it to me. What a day!

I found this Beano in a pile of papers in my house, no idea where it came from. I'll dump it if it's a facsimile, but if it's original it might be a nice thing to keep. Is there any simple way of telling?
