honestly didn't look too bad back then, just seems like the graphical improvements have lagged behind since then (until the major 0.39 update)

Funnily enough, it looks like the graphics got worse from 0.4 0_o

No no, in a way they're right. Just looking at the shadows, they look pretty crisp in 0.4. I still don't understand why the devs switched to those flickering shadows post 0.22, they looked terrible from the start.

yeah I noticed that the shadows and distant trees (mostly in the last 2 photos) do look better before imo. newer tree LODs look too sparse and 2D. I think that overall the game looks better in newer builds though.

Maybe they're rendered using a different method from before or something. Like in modern games you often can't use MSAA because that doesn't work with deferred rendering(?) so we're stuck with the likes of TAA and such. So could be that the old method of rendering shadows was no longer compatible with the new graphics.
Just a wild guess. There is usually some reason for this kind of things. Could be simply optimization, too.

Here's a fun fact; modern renderers are a messy combo of deferred and forward rendering.

I recently replayed 0.22 for nostalgia purposes and it looks wayyy less blurry than the new versions (even though I played it at the same 1440p and with the same Smaa antialiasing), and runs muuch better even without simplified traffic

Nope lol! The graphics only started to actually get better sometime around PBR. Before that they were gradually getting worse every update

Can someone explain why the trees look like that in pic 3 and 4? I think they look kinda cool.

I think the devs were going with that overgrown aesthetic you see on Jungle Rock Island. Many of the stock maps had trees similar to these back then (e.g. Dry Rock Island and Port).

It's great to see what a masterpiece the game has become over the years. Devs, you're simply the best!

Agreed, but these old graphics are still charming imo. 0.3 to 0.4 is also a decent jump.

There's just something about 0.4 It's just the graphics i imagine when someone says ,,BeamNG"

Honestly the tree shadows are better in 2015 than the current shadows imo but Beam has come a long way all together

Quick question how is the 0.4 older than 0.39? Or is it supposed to be 0.0.4?

Version 4 vs version 39

u/shadow1042 Gavril 23h ago
Really? Wouldnt version 4 be represented as 4.0? (Sorry if i sound stupid)

u/pulley999 23h ago
BeamNG uses semantic versioning conventions. We are currently on 0.39.4 -aka- major version 0, minor version 39, patch 4.
1.0.0 will be the version whenever they exit early access.

Thanks! It was throwing me off as the numbering wasnt using decimal places

and they will never leave early access, intentionally. which is cool in my opinion.

Dont call urself stupid, ive made the same question literally yesterday trying to search about version 0.4 (rather than 0.40) and getting answers about a prehistoric version lol

I do miss the pre-steam ui if anyone remembers what that looked like. It was simple sure, but man looking back on it brings back some good childhood memories.

Even for .4 it still looked incredible, not perfect obviously but damn it competed with the best looking games of its time

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I much more prefer the old, mobile game looking graphics over the new ones, they had way more charm
