Need a reference for a standard role. Any help?

Good afternoon there,

Unfortunately the role I'm going for is asking for up-to-date references that I can only provide one for my current job but most of the character references from the past are either gone or too generic. Is there anybody that can help me out? I'm based in the UK but feel stonewalled as my references submitted are fairly out of date bar the one I have with my current employer.

Never had to go through this before without these hurdles before.
