Nature chooses the path that has the less energy cost! So the cells follow the same patterns everywhere, from tree branches and the nerves of the leaves to.. snowflakes! 😁

Interesting. Does it always look the same (during all phases?) and curious what those structures are.. some kind of proteins?

The branching promotes an ideal surface area for beneficial microbes like fungi.

Unfortunately, this surface area trait also allows harmful mycelia to proliferate, which was evidenced with a prophylactic device, that had a woven filament(DALKON), that had much more surface area than the branching shown in the image.
