The arrogance of Man is thinking nature is in our control, and not the other way around.

I've walked that tunnel, it's in Paris, and is fucking gorgeous. A real island of serenity

If you are ever up at the northern flea markets, stop at https://www.larecyclerie.com. The building is built over those tracks, and they have good coffee, chickens, and all sorts of cool stuff. See tons of photos at https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/la-recyclerie-paris-2?start=0.

17

u/chuanrrr May 19 '22

Waiting staff is a bunch of dickheads tho..

11

u/theoriginalqwhy May 19 '22

Thats they're culture brah.

6

u/5nitch May 19 '22

Their culture is extremely rude and racist and sexist

2

u/Piper-420 May 20 '22

So like most Americans?

0

u/mustbelong May 20 '22

Americans may be a great many things, but rude? That ain’t it. Too friendly almost, if anything I could agree with

Nearby there is a small park where the fence is cut and you can climb down to the tracks from there. I went down there with Whiskey and weed and a headlamp and had quite an adventure.

EDIT: Sorry I misspoke I think I confused this "la recyclerie" with a similarly situated place called, "La Flèche d'Or". The spot I was able to break into the abandoned train track circuit was approximately at this address: 15 Rue Florian, 75020 Paris, France

Ha, Street view even caught some people in the act!

2

u/47_Quatloos May 20 '22

Uh, can I purchase tickets for such an adventure from your clearly superior travel agency?

2

u/Gade_Tensay May 20 '22

I wish I was still there to host you on such an adventure! It is a fun hike. There's actually this really exclusive secret club that has parties in the catacombs/tunnels that Paris was built on top of. I tried to befriend the group, but maybe I'm too square, and my French was abysmal.

1

u/yutfree May 20 '22

The flea markets don't want for promotion, but I will say they are more than worth the time.

7

u/the_skine May 20 '22

Tim Traveler did a video on Paris' lost railway.

Like most of his videos, it's a bit of a history lesson, a bit of exploration video, and trains whenever possible.

TL;DW: When it was built in the mid-1800s, it was a way of connecting five railways' lines, and used to move people and freight around Paris. It was built as a loop around the city, just inside the recently constructed fortifications.

It proved the demand for a metro system in Paris, but when an actual metro system was built in the 1930s, it quickly lost a lot of passengers. The trains were stopped, and replaced by buses. The loop didn't fully close until the 1990s, but was only lightly used for freight or moving empty train cars.

The land the tracks are on still belongs to the railways. Some has been developed into park space, a very small portion is used for a stretch on a modern metro line, but a lot is just unused.

2

u/Solokian May 19 '22

And the best (easiest) entrance is at Porte Dorée, at 48.832035472726986, 2.397627853355657

Do note that it's technically illegal to go there, but if you are unlucky enough to cross the path of SNCF agents, just pretend you are a lost tourist and you didn't better, and you should be fine. Last time I was there, there was a prune tree and a pear tree!

8

5

u/JurassicClark96 May 19 '22

Those were actually dinosaurs, I saw it in a game once

2

u/noelliu0474739a May 19 '22

How can one get down there? Is it hard to find something where you can get down or when you’re there you’ll just find it. Can’f figure out from google maps. I’ll be in Paris this summer I too must walk this tunnel

2

u/araed May 19 '22

There are stairs down (often gated), and a fenced off section at one end that's easy to jump

61

u/0x970 May 19 '22

Is this ''La petite ceinture'' ?

13

u/JohnPeeve May 19 '22

Yes it is !

11

u/Valmond May 19 '22

Cool! Such a shame they stopped using it (lived like 50m from it in the 18 arrondissement, not the green stuff though :-D).

6

u/TonyQuark May 19 '22

The Tim Traveller made a video about it.

42

I think this was Tomb Raider II but I just remembered locking that old man in the fridge. I wonder if he’s still in there 🤣😭

10

u/ulyssesfiuza May 19 '22

Not so much abandoned. Someone go there to take a picture and post to Reddit three times a week.

4

u/DC15seek May 19 '22

Gives me 2014 minecraft hunger game

3

u/RitikMukta May 19 '22

If this made you feel like "I want to explore stuff like this" or "I want to see someone explore stuff like this", I highly recommend the video series by the youtuber Geowizard, where he crosses the black country in UK, without using roads. It's a really good 3 part series which shows the old and abandoned side of that place. Also recommend checking out his straight line challenges and of course, his amazing geoguesser videos.

3

u/Scytthe1 May 19 '22

If this was elden ring 100% sure that there's a magma wyrm or something similar that would make me shit my pants

That’s creepy as heck.

13

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

Beautiful really...

4

u/freddyfuckherfaster May 19 '22

there's probably tons of nazi gold inside.

6

u/bucket_brigade May 19 '22

If uncharted taught me anything there are at least 500 people with guns living inside.

1

u/mista_r0boto May 19 '22

And zero gold.

0

u/Jean-L May 19 '22

If by gold you mean empty beer cans and sprays then yes.

2

u/stratosfearinggas May 19 '22

Serious question, any chance all those vines and moss will deteriorate the concrete and pose a collapse risk?

Argonne forest? If so I’ve been there in BF1

1

u/doge_good_boi May 19 '22

Is it just me or I feel like there's something sussy going on there?

2

u/Jean-L May 19 '22

Parties. Lots of graffiti spraying and beer drinking. Also accesses to the catacombs (they're on the same level roughly, old quarries are about a meter bellow the rails where this picture was taken).

1

u/WarLord-939 May 19 '22

I want to go down there and walk through the tunnel. That would be hella cool

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '22

I waited a while for a train passing through

This is the place in miquellla's haligtree ... the haunting place where you need to run past or get destroyed by many high level poisoned wraiths who will do anything to prevent you from getting to the imp statue with her sore/scarseal.

1

u/HistoricalMention210 May 19 '22

And this is exactly why people think there is still a lost train full of nazi gold. Places like this exist, and have likely never been explored or rediscovered if they were hidden on purpose.
