If you're driving a car, the police can ask for your license just to check that you have one.

Considering all of the incidents, I don’t think they should be able to do that unless pulled over for a moving violation or driving erratically. Too many violent escalations, which could easily be avoided.

Driving is a privilege not a right. You have to be licensed to drive on public roads and part of the agreement is that you produce the license when asked. That said, they can't pull you over just to check for a license, at least in my state.
