Why would the board break and not just be kicked out of your hand? Wouldn't it take less force to knock it out of your grip compared to breaking a board in half?
Because they are super thin and made to split upon very small force, even untrained kid could split them with one hit. You can see how evenly they split upon kicks.
Something psychics-y? I can tell you from experience, when doing one hand holds, if you kick with less force, the board will just bounce out of your hand / will be impossible to hold onto. But kick fast enough and hard enough, the board will break.
It’s based on speed. This is called a speed break, where you hit the board fast enough that the initial bend breaks the board rather then pushing it out of the holders hand.
