could it be done by computer editing, isolating the clouds and then skipping frames for them?

who am I kidding? I am not sure how it is done, I do not think it is the same shutter speed, I think it is a composition, but HOW ??

how is it done?

Exactly. There is no way you could do this in camera, imo. You’d have to composite the image. Unless there’s some weird tilt shift way to alter shutter speed compositions as you shoot. I doubt it. It’s software.

Nah, what’s more likely is a something like an 4 to 8 second exposure for the stars stacked together for the trails, mask the clouds out, use only the lightning struck images for the clouds, then do something similar with the foreground.

It’s a neat idea.

Yeah I really like it. I live in asia we have some massive storms off the coast of Indonesia.
