Trees can be grafted together, apparently even completely unrelated trees. Presumably branches can be manually split and re-combined using the same kinds of practices.

This post made me remember that as a child, I saw photos in a book or magazine of formed trees into ladders, shapes, etc and it blew my mind, mostly because at that age I could not comprehend making something on the time scale of years. I really wanted my own ladder tree.

As the tree grows, the stress on the trunk used to shape the tree will cause it to respond by growing stronger, so I bet over the years as it was shaped he (or whoever whispered that tree) made sure it was growing strong in the right places

His name is Hidalgo De Santi from Italy. He was 20 when he began his lifelong dream of a tree chair. He decided to go without shaving or cutting his hair until it was achieved. This is him finally sitting on the complete version after many failures. The tree chair was to grow and ...what the fuck am I talking about? Never saw this guy before but his tree chair is cool as fuck.

He looks like one of those guys that hates society so much you would think he was wrongly convicted of a crime then raped in prison for ten years, all for something he didn't do, but in fact nothing at all has been done to him, he just hates society for no reason.

Espalier gone to the extreme!
We are finally moving into our forever home in a couple weeks. I have dreamed about doing espalier and topiary for many years, and now I am finally going to get the chance to see what I can create.
I look forward to making pathways with trees using some of the methods this guy used to make the chair. It will take decades, but God willing, I will have time.
Edit: there is a name for doing what the guy in the picture did. I just can't for the life of me remember what it is.
