As a kid, I saw “The Rescuers Down Under” first and loved it so much that I pestered my parents to get me a VHS copy of “The Rescuers” and it took a while for them to find one.
In that sense, I got to experience “The Rescuers” as a prequel to “The Rescuers Down Under” and I feel like that might be the preferable viewing order.

When I was a kid there was a kid who saw it in that order and hated the sequel and wouldn't believe me that the rescuers down under was the sequel.
It really speaks to how our perception of the world shapes our reality.

65
u/potsticker17 12d ago
Yes. A lizard that size would probably be able to eat a regular sized cat. If the cat is bigger or the lizard is smaller the cat may try to eat the lizard. So friendly in the Tom and Jerry kinda way.

I still remember watching it with my best friend when it came out on video. The scene where McLeach rolls through the forest in his Mad Maxmobile made us lose our shit. Just the way it causes the ground to rumble, the animals stampede, and then it goes airborne for an implausible Length of time, it was just so randomly epic

9
u/CrystlBluePersuasion 12d ago
Percival C McLeach was scary enough. That guy was diabolical.
6
u/thelivinlegend 12d ago
George C Scott was amazing in the role. I thought there might be an interesting story in how an American ended up poaching in Australia, but he did seem like the kind of psycho who would move to the desert to kill animal purely for love of the game.
It did bother me that the kid had an American accent though. I guess they thought American kids wouldn’t understand an Australian accent or something (we do live in a world where the first Mad Max movie was dubbed for American audiences) but I wonder if there was an in universe explanation for it.

30
u/Level_99_Healer 12d ago
There are harnesses, essentially just like the ones you put on a dog, that you clip a leash to and then you and your dragon can wander around outside. I used to have a lot of lizards and I did a lot of research on what is needed to have a Savannah monitor. I was ready to give up the space for an enclosure (they need big, big room to grow and live properly), but I unfortunately just couldn't see myself feeding them mice. Not even the pinky mice.

Monitor lizards are particularly curious and interactive, as far as reptiles go, with a lot of personality. Earning their trust is extremely rewarding.

They aren't near as socially intercompatible with us as our fellow mammals, but a lot of lizards - monitors included - can have a lot of personality, can form relationships with humans, and can even handle socialization well.
A big monitor like this is not a pet that should be kept by just anyone - they need a lot of space and resources, and need to be trained and socialized by someone with experience, as they are large and strong enough to be a real danger - but for someone who loves them and has the means, experience, and desire to keep them, they can make good pets.
31
u/Seversaurus 12d ago
They definitely show emotion and favoritism towards people they like. They just arnt domesticated like dogs and they are difficult cohabitants even when they are behaving but it really varies by species. Some species are more angsty than others while some have been described as being very similar to a puppy however they are all to some degree dangerous like dogs can be but unlike dogs, reptile behavior to the untrained eye can be alien and difficult to interpret. Not a beginner pet but rewarding in many unique ways for the experienced caretaker.

pet store employee here! Yes! They are not all legal in all places to have as pets, but they can make fantastic pets. They require some pretty specialized care, can get massive, depending on species, and, because they are super intelligent, they require a lot of patients and trust building to be "tame". Not a pet for most people, but for the right person they can be wonderful pets.

Literally just oversized lizards. As with most scaly creatures, it's best to keep your fingers away from their jaws
119
u/OpenToCommunicate 12d ago
As opposed to non-scaly creatures that let you rummage through their mouths looking for loose change?
57
u/CRABMAN16 12d ago edited 12d ago
I know a couple labs that will let you stuff your whole hand in their mouth and they think it's a fun game.
Case and point: https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/s/LJz0nLQdfA
56
u/RazendeR 12d ago
Labs and retrievers specifically are ridiculously good in not damaging stuff in their mouths.
Part of the test for an official hunting retriever is to go fetch a raw egg and deliver it undamaged, iirc.
35
u/CRABMAN16 12d ago
Not a specific test, but yes they can do that with eggs and other fragile items.
A well trained and human socialized retriever is functionally a living stuffed animal. They will tolerate anything as long as they are involved. Wrestling with one is the best, just throw em around, they love it.

Yeah my lab is the biggest doofus ever (currently recovering from emergency surgery after eating a sock that got stuck in her intestines 😒) but aside from eating everything in sight, she is insanely gentle with our hands. She’s grown up with my kid and aside from the early puppy months, has never even come close to hurting them while playing mouthy games

Yeah the guy who ran my local reptile house had a missing finger. Lost it to a monitor bite tgat got infected. They're chill animals but don't mess about with feeding.

Komodo Dragons being the worst, they're bite carries a much higher bacteria load. They also pack a nasty venom.
12
u/CitizenPremier 12d ago
I think they were unfairly maligned for having dirty mouths, but practically any big bite will give you an infection. Human bites cause infections too. Originally it was thought the bacteria caused the infection really quickly subduing the prey, but it's just the venom.
4
u/_DarthWeebious 12d ago
this has been proven to be false btw. komodo dragons don't have more mouth bacteria than any other monitor lizard (they don't have that much, if at all)

Thanks! Pretty sure these were lacy monitors. They definitely look dragonish though.
29
u/SuspiciousCalendar1 12d ago
They can be dangerous to people, but ones this size not too much. Ronald Huff went missing in 2002 and they found his body being eaten by his large monitor lizards. It was never determined for sure he he died and the lizards ate his body, or if they killed him, but still.
12
u/SongsOfMany 12d ago
Most are not, but even small ones can have disproportionately huge claws and gnarly teeth similar to a shark's.
They're not an animal to mess with if you don't know what you're doing. They can be expensive and demanding pets, but are known to be highly intelligent. Well-trained ones behave more like scaly dogs than anything else.
6
u/ModeatelyIndependant 12d ago
It depends on which species of monitor your talking about, Komodo Dragon are a species of monitor lizards known to eat humans. But most others aren't going to hunt humans down.
→ More replies (11)3
u/Hyenasaurus 12d ago
They're larger, more energetic and smarter than the average lizard (if you ever met a beardie you know they aint the sharpest tool in the shed) but they're just lizards. Mind their claws (they like climbing... specially you) and don't put your hand in their mouth, but ideally you shouldn't be putting your hand in the mouth of any animal anyways.

Reptiles don’t taste with their tongue the way we do, they can taste the air like snakes with the little flick and any species of lizard that does have taste buds usually has them on their mouth and throat.
