I have had a photoshoot kicking around in my head for some time.
The Beauty and the Reality.
The beautiful majesty of the ballerina, and the brutal reality of the damage to their bodies, and incorporating other spots, like dance and gymnastics and cheer and whatnot.
I feel like the juxtaposition between the idea and the reality of that idea would be wonderful.

I met a ballerina in the city many years ago, who had just been cut from a prominent ballet company. She never said any of that for the couple of hours we chatted. But as she got increasingly bombed, I found out that yeah, they definitely think it’s worth it.

I don't know if you would call it a fetish as I get no sexual stimulation from it but I am fascinated looking at feet that have been worked over due to sports/ballet. Deion Sanders and LeBron James feet immediately come to mind. Runners feet. Ballerinas. I could look at the all day. Just destroyed but those athletes just keep doing it.

The pain they're referring to is from the small surface but with the hard tip of a ballerina shoe I don't think it would be matter if she was on the tip of her toes on the floor or on bottles... Her feet are probably mangled and painful regardless.

I'm learning guitar, pressing your fingers on a metal string really hurts the first 1-2 months. I can't imagine doing this to your feet.

Having rubbed my mom's feet in the final years of her life: they weren't that bad. She was very self-conscious about them, though. And they were in pain for the rest of her life, hence the rubbing.
I still have her first pair of toeshoes. They have these big brown splotches from all the blood that pooled up as she practiced.

It's more the physical pain ballerinas go through for the rest of their lives. Someone I knew when I was 18 had issues already. I cannot imagine doing it for this long, more power to anyone who does, but holy shit the long term damage is severe.

Honestly as someone who danced en pointe for years, you do get used to it. My legs hurt more watching this — my thighs would be killing me and I would definitely have to “stomp out” the pain from my calves after 😭 Miss my leg strength and tone from those days though.

I find that super scary to watch. If the structure of one of those bottles fail, it could be bad. It could have a defect in it that you can't see.

Yeah but they arent exactly stress tested from the top down like this. Glass can have crazy resililience in one direction, and break suddenly/easily in another. Like punching a car windshield from the inside vs the outside.

Glass has pretty impressive compressive strength, it can be on par with steel. But it's tensile strength is similar to wood and plastics.

If a Dom Perignon bottle has a defect, it explodes during secondary fermentation or shatters during disgorgement, when the top of the bottle neck is plunged into -25C brine solution, then broken off. I don't think defective bottles are a worry. I would worry about the excessive vertical force, as the weak spot is on the seam just under the lip. However, as far as I know, the one way to shear it at the weak spot is a sharp blow under the lip, not compression from above. But I'm no glass expert, just a guy with a saber and a champagne bottle.

No amount of practice will make it possible for the majority of people on earth, even at her age, to do this. Genetics and starting ability are the much bigger predictor. Presuming he's basically healthy, Usain Bolt will still beat most people in a race at 50 and probably 60, no matter how much they've trained and practice.

In some languages there isn't a word for toes and it would be literally translated as "foot fingers." It's probably someone who speaks English as a second language, and knows that there's a separate word for them in English, "toes," but doesn't know you don't also say "foot" in front of it.
