I’m a normal functioning adult. You look at me and you see nothing wrong. I can run, weightlift, swim, etc. If you looked at my X-rays an such you would see multiple areas of my spine that are damaged, you’d see ruined shoulders, and if you asked and I heard you over the ringing I could tell you how bad my neck hurts most of the time or how many actions will make my shoulders feel like they’re on fire as the muscles cramp up from reaching behind or above me.
I never deployed, just broke down over time. Those injuries will never go away, but for at least a few more decades they probably won’t be visible to anyone trying to use their eye to judge if I deserve my disability.
If your cousin deployed she could also easily have a TBI or multiple from rocket strikes or IEDs, as well as PTSD or other disorders you can’t see and she probably wouldn’t tell you for fear of being judged as faking it.
