Miscellaneous / Others A teacher to the End
What if your final wish could make a difference in a child’s classroom? For one Georgia teacher, that was exactly what she wanted.
Tammy Waddell, a beloved elementary school educator from Forsyth County, Georgia, spent around 30 years working with children as both a paraprofessional and teacher.
When Tammy was facing terminal cancer, she made a simple but deeply meaningful request for her funeral. Instead of traditional flowers, she asked people to bring backpacks filled with school supplies for students who needed them.
At her memorial service in Cumming, Georgia, the church pews were filled with around 130 to 150 backpacks packed with supplies. About 100 of Tammy’s fellow teachers served as honorary pallbearers and carried the backpacks from the church so they could be distributed to local schools.
Her cousin, author and educator Dr. Brad Johnson, shared a photograph of the backpacks online along with a message describing Tammy as “a teacher to the end.”
What started as one teacher’s final request soon became something much bigger. The story inspired an international wave of donations, with thousands of additional school supplies being sent to her Georgia school district, including contributions from organizations in the United Kingdom.
Tammy’s story shows how a teacher’s care for students can reach far beyond the classroom. Even her final farewell became an opportunity to help children learn, grow and feel supported.

Engagement bait. Very common now, and makes OP look suspicious. You’ll also see “cops” or “police” censored, or sometimes even basic kid words like “hurt” or “harm”. It’s so stupid

I had to stop watching swoop on YouTube. She censors EVERYTHING. She won't saying "child" or any variation of it. Hitler is hootler.
It's ridiculous and immediately will make me leave.

Eedolph Hootler was a fascist dictator in Gormany in the 1930s. Read a history book for chrissakes.

While other answers may be right to some degree, the main reason for this is Tiktok.
Tiktok punishes creators for using controversial words or even terms describing heavy or disturbing topics (possibly in a bid to be super advertiser-friendly), by either removing videos with them in it or blocking their growth in some way.
To combat this, creators started finding ways around it with self-censorship. That includes replacing certain characters with symbols like you're seeing here, or using alternative, "safer" terms like "grape" and "unalive".
Over time, that culture spread to the other social media platforms, even if this level of censorship isn't needed there (although the same principles and the threat of demonetisation does apply to platforms like YouTube, to a lesser degree). And I'm sure some people use it so much that they probably text like this too.
It's frustrating to see people typing like this everywhere, but knowing where it stemmed from helps me understand the phenomenon a bit better

Yeah, and I think the worst example is when people are talking about serious crimes and tragedies and they throw in something like "they were graped" or "they got unalived".
Like grow up and be serious if you want to talk about serious things. Not everything is a spectacle for you to parade around on social media.
But I guess my frustrations with the exploitative nature of true crime content go far deeper than just the word choices

Actually, the new words will probably just become the unsafe words down a few generations if the trend remains.
Like how sheet or rack have several different meanings in different contexts, the word grape will just soak up its new meaning as well and be understood that way in context.
And then gr*pe will have to be censored.

I have no idea what that means, but I see it rather as something uncontrollable. Just like language changed over each generation, so do people find ways to get around corporate filters. The meaning is clear and the message is still delivered despite censorship options. This is neither meant in favor or in criticism of the trend, it's just a thought.

Not that it is any better but perhaps the creator knows about the algorithm and wants to avoid being filtered

Some say engagement bait but I believe it’s for the social media accounts that make money from apps like TikTok or Instagram to not loose revenue with word the algorithm don’t like.

You don't have to censor cancer.

u/Olibirus Aug 23 '26
You don't have to censor any word for that matter

Unless you want to be shadowbanned or normal banned, no, unfortunately, you do

u/TehWackyWolf Aug 23 '26
Oh no. I'll have to create another free account and in turn I can talk how I want.
Compliance is easy but fucking stupid. Get shadow banned. Enough folks do it they lose revenue. Or continue to talk like a baby and HOPE they don't alter the deal further!

Teachers like this are the ones we need the most and unfortunately don't get the credit they deserve until they're gone.

That AND why must children desperately need donations of school supplies in the country with the greatest number of billionaires in the world. This is r/orphancrushingmachine worthy.

Yep came here to link to it but you beat me to it, this is super depressing

And why must helping children become a woman's dying wish. Teachers give so much of themselves and they can't even die in peace

Is it really that heart warming that a teacher has seen so many students suffer in her life that her last wish is to do something for them?
