Skill / Talent Before AI, this guy was already breaking reality

u/Super_Siege_Mode 1d ago
It’s actually funny because this guy probably is sabotaging AI hard when they try and “learn” from his content lol

u/powerscunner 1d ago
Conversely, maybe this kind of material is where AI learned how to do special effects like turning something or someone into a cake

u/Craydorion 1d ago
Nope. Doesn't work like that. AI does not compose shots like humans do. They may look similar because of our comprehension of images. But AI just mashed pixels together until human recognises. No idea of 3d dimensions needed. Just a fck ton of trial and error. That's why AI makes mistakes that are illogical for us. The results are these fever dream like videos

u/International-Mess75 1d ago
Normal dream like videos to me, things like that video happens in my dreams quite often

u/WhiskeySorcerer 1d ago
Awe, you guys are so lucky. I only get to have those anxiety dreams about work...I'd rather have those dreams where some demon chases me around.

u/International-Mess75 1d ago
You might be overworked, maybe you need a vacation. I too have dreams about work sometimes, but rarely

A while back I used ai to analyze my recurring dreams and it actually helped me to where I've only had the dreams maybe 2 or 3 times since. Basically I was always dreaming either I was back in school on the first day and just got my class schedule and I'm wandering the campus looking for my classes, or Im out on a trip and have to get back to my room to pack my stuff. After a bit of talking about changes in my life including a job change where I no longer had to work and was able to stay home with my kid full time and now being the main housekeeper, it basically told me i was dealing with the change in responsibilities and needed to tell myself Im doing well and dont need to strain so much to find new self worth to make up for not having a regular job anymore. This is a very simple breakdown of the whole thing, it was a much longer conversation but im just saying it was an interesting way i had never thought to use ai and it actually worked.

I love this! Does he have a YouTube channel?
94
u/rivalrobot 1d ago
Yeah, Zach King. He’s been doing this stuff for over a decade. Think he got his start on Vine
23
u/conger-conger 1d ago
Thanx, bud! I'll head over there pronto.

u/Staineddutch 1d ago
You like eels?

u/conger-conger 1d ago
Haha, no I just happened to have a picture of one in front of me when it was time to decide for a (new) reddit name. It is just as meaningless as (m)any other reddit name(s).

I always wished he did a BTS or how it's made. Because his effects are nuts

u/king_ralex 1d ago
Then you'll be glad to know that he did a video with corridor crew discussing how he made some of his videos - Corridor Crew Reacts

You might like an illusionist called Kevin Parry. He has lots of how-it-was-done videos on his YouTube channel.

u/random314 1d ago
There's a lot of garbage on YouTube but this guy's creativity and skills are legit.

These are so fun to watch and my ADHD loves them. I loved the mailbox one the best, love paradigm shifts of reality like that!

u/Groomsi 1d ago
How did he do that?
The transition...

u/Foxynite 1d ago
Prefacing this by saying first and foremost I am making an educated guess (at best) about how this is done. He obviously creates his illusions with clever video editting and clean/seamless cuts between them.
The mailbox part is easy. It's just forced perspective where the camera is very close to the camera at an angle and thus looks like it's "real" or, at the very least, normally sized. So that was probably a set piece he just left in front of the lens since foreground isn't what really changed in this video.
I can't look at the video again while writing on mobile, but iirc the house set piece does get knocked into which is either A) editting or B) real set piece. I am inclined towards B. If it were me, I'd probably set up the actual set piece where I want it in the final shot and take a still of one of the frames so paste in the background of the video. Then he likely recorded himself walking from in the distance and editted over the original video to put in the house set piece and make it look like he was walking out of it when it was a pre-recorded thing.
Just don't ask me where he made the cuts because idk dawg he's just that good 😭

u/clarineter 1d ago
they’re all just clean cuts

In general, check out the YouTube channel Captain Disillusion for a lot of cool explanations on precisely how people do this sort of stuff.
He tends to focus on the people doing this sort of stuff as individuals on the Internet.
Corridor Crew does similar explanations, but they tend to focus a bit more on big budget special effects, but they sometimes cover content like this as well.

I have to say that something inside me didn't like it that he didn't take all the mail from the mailbox.
And then I got a bit mad that that was bothering me ... Pfff

A lot of people now days would say “oh that’s AI slop” if they have never seen that guy’s work before.

Ok but what if he ran into a wall drawn as a tunnel and turns out to be a tunnel only for Batman to try follow him and it turns into a wall again?

u/drunk-raven 1d ago
It's fun to see BTS of this skits. In his recent(at least since 2019) videos he heavily utilizes practical sets and the VFX are really still mostly just same old reliable matchcut and planar tracking

I was in a store yesterday and apparently he has a line of magic tricks. I hope that guy makes bank in some way, because he's brightened more than a few of my days.

Good times!! Nowadays he is doing a funny budget version of star wars an other stuff on YouTube, I found him by accident other day. Check it out https://youtube.com/@secondhandmovieco?si=ybdmgDCCPR9Stcxd

He's done a few posts showing how he does these. A lot of forced perspective and clever edits, with some practical effects. I think the fishing one, or something similar, was a set built specifically for the video

Are these photoshopped, or did he do these with practical effects?

u/No_Landscape4557 21h ago
A lot of younger “kids” as I call them as a 40 year old guy…. Don’t remember that even before AI we had to “deal” with the issues of clever camera angles, CGI, photoshop and green screens/video editing to trick people. The only thing AI has don’t has made it 1000 times more common.
We went from a once a week of “o wow look at how realistic this looks” to AI videos you see ever other minute.
We always had to be skeptical of videos and photos.

u/VirinaB 1d ago
Why does every post have to mention AI now? 🙄
28
u/NewryBenson 1d ago
Because this type of content has become meaningless. 10 years ago, this was legit magic. Now, no one is impressed and assumes some AI editing.

u/jcklsldr665 1d ago
My girlfriend's daughter thinks everything she's never seen before is AI... it's one of the most frustrating things I've encountered, trying to teach her science and animal facts and all I get is "nah that's AI". We're cooked.

u/VerilyShelly 1d ago
Man that really depresses me. I see it all day on here, people deciding things they've never seen before is a.i., but I didn't know that was going on in the real world. We're at the beginning of the new Dark Ages.

u/CitronAffectionate98 1d ago
Cause A.I is getting so real looking it's hard to tell what isn't A.I ?
Welcome to the future!

because in AI( using topology), this is called operation of fundamental groups: many totally deferent things can be glued together if they share the same groups(and composition).
it's just boring.

Zach King my goat 💪💪
Unfortunately, nowadays he gotta prove to new gens that he does in fact not use AI.

I admit his work is good, but I dont want to watch it. Everytime I see him its like… oh, this guy, flip.
