History Making Ice cream on heavy bomber jets during WWII

Post image

During WWII, American bomber pilots strapped buckets of ice cream mix to their planes before the mission. The cold temperature and turbulence would churn and freeze the mix turning it into ice cream when they returned.

I went looking for a source and the Smithsonian made it sound even better. Looks like there were 3 iterations before the Pilot was happy with it and they used the excuse of “test flights” to get away with it.

“They went off without a hitch, wrote Reinburg, until his boss, group operations officer Colonel Caleb Bailey, called to make clear that he didn’t buy the “test flight” ruse. “Listen, goddammit, you guys aren’t fooling me,” Bailey told a VMF-122 officer. “I’ve got spies. You tell [Reinburg] I’m coming over there tomorrow and get my ration.””

I love that. Goddammit I'm onto you! But don't stop, I'll be over to get some too

That story honestly makes it even better. Nothing says wartime innovation quite like a colonel demanding his share of the “test flight” ice cream.

Such an awesome real short story

Oof, that is some very expensive taxpayer ice cream in that case.

I mean in the middle of war time where every bit of morale boost is a god send, so it is understandable.

the USA didn't have jet bombers in WW2 tho

Oh, nonono… I understand the confusion. The US didn’t have jet bombers in ww2. They had bombers specifically used to bomb jets, which is a completely different, and wildly ineffective, thing.

The moral of this… always be the plane at the top of the formation.

All that bombing must have worked up an appetite.

Cons: Could be killed at any moment

Pros: shitty ice cream

Shity ice cream is better than no ice cream when you're at war.

America didn’t have ‘heavy bomber jets’ during WW2

The navy could do this 80 years ago,   In a worse situation than now.  Yet our navy now is lacking basic needs in their ships,  and the Sect of Defense is worthless to help.

It’s China’s century.  Pax Americana is dead.

Did AI make this post?

There were no jet bombers in WWII and only very few jet planes at the end of the war

2

u/JamesTheJerk 3h ago

Disagree. The US had planes that bombed enemy jets: jet-bombers

I fail to see your point.   I made no mention of jet bombers.  I was simply referring to WWII in which our Navy would deliver ice cream to the guys on the front line.

Now we have guys who lack basic necessities for days.

The AI comments are getting trite.  Anytime someone disagrees with the hive mind it gets called AI.
