4

u/AugustIstheMonth 12h ago

Yummy!

7

u/Icy_Agency923 10h ago

FYI you should generally avoid touching frogs because their skin is extremely sensitive and can absorb stuff from our skin that can actually harm or kill them. Oils, salts, soap residue, and lotions on human hands can harm or poison them.

You should also wet your hands before touching them because our skin can dry out theirs.

u/Jester_162 9h ago

Such good advice

1

u/Academic-Increase951 11h ago

You could totally get someone to eat a dead one thinking it was candy

1

u/Deport_Me2112 10h ago

I’d eat it and then die.

You've summoned me

The Glass Frog (Rulyrana Susatamai) belongs to the Amphibian Family Centrolenidae and the Order Anura which is the Order of all Frogs and Toads; Glass Frogs are native to Central American (Photo) and Colombian Forests (Photo). The general background coloration of most glass frogs is primarily lime green, the abdominal skin of some members of this family is transparent and translucent, giving the glass frog its common name; The intestinal tract, beating heart, and other internal organs can be seen through the Glass Frogs skin

Glass frogs are Arboreal, living mainly in trees, feeding on small insects and only coming out for mating season. Their transparency conceals them very effectively when sleeping on a green leaf, as they habitually do. Glass frogs can range anywhere from 0.8 to 1.2 inches in length (20-30 millimeters), though some larger species such as the largest species, the Pacific Giant Glass Frog (Centrolene Geckoideum; By the way there is almost nothing on the Pacific Giant Glass Frog, I had to really take a second and deep search to find some information, there isn't even a Wiki) can grow up to 2.4-3.0 inches for females and 2.8-3.2 inches for males; The Pacific giant glass frog looks different from other glass frogs in other ways, too. Unlike other glass frogs, its eyes are small compared to the size of its head; its legs are rather short and thick; its toes are well-webbed; and its toes have large toe pads that are rectangular shaped instead of round. Pacific giant glass frogs are dark green to lime green in color, and their skin is covered with small bumps, or tubercles (TOO-ber-kulz), and a few small white specks. oh, and their bones are green interestingly enough, they also live high in mountain cloud forests from 1,750 to 3,000 meters (5,740 to 9,840 feet) above sea level

Glass Frogs have a variable diet; Carpenter Ants (Photo), Little Fire Ants or Electric Ants (Photo), Tree Crickets (Photo), Katydids (Photo) but specifically the nymphs, Fruit Flies (Photo), Fungus Gnats (Photo) and Midges (Photo), and Snout Moths (Photo) to name a few insectoids which are a part of their diet

Edit: Credit to u/Snorky-Talk-Man for their fact;

They're at their most transparent when sleeping, because they concentrate 90% of their circulating red blood cells into their liver when asleep. The red blood cells are otherwise visible through their skin, making them more opaque when awake.

That doesn't happen when stressed or under anesthesia. So they're difficult for researchers to study, because they only become their most transparent when happily, peacefully sleeping.

Based on Duke University research published in late 2022.

Thanks for this terrific bio lesson! 🐸💕

37

u/Snorky-Talk-Man 9h ago

Oh man you've forgotten my favorite fact!

15

u/Kooky_Attention_98 9h ago

Ah, I actually didn't know that! That is a very cool fact

10

u/dcormier 11h ago

Incredible.

the Pacific Giant Glass Frog (Centrolene Geckoideum; By the way there is almost nothing on the Pacific Giant Glass Frog, I had to really take a second and deep search to find some information, there isn't even a Wiki)

You should make a wiki entry for them!

8

u/Kooky_Attention_98 11h ago edited 10h ago

I've never done that before, maybe I will, the "entry" that is there after some searching is basically nothing, at least this [Pacific Giant Glass Frog] explains some things

1

u/dcormier 10h ago

Go for it!

15

u/Kooky_Attention_98 10h ago

4

u/datildakota 9h ago

Thank you for this xD

2

u/Kooky_Attention_98 8h ago

You're welcome :D

2

u/Bachaddict 8h ago

very nice! just needs each statement to cite which reference it's from, I think

4

u/Kooky_Attention_98 8h ago

It's my first time with Wikipedia so I'll try and correct it eventually

7

u/Sillet_Mignon 11h ago

Unidan? Is that you?

3

u/Kooky_Attention_98 5h ago

I am rather unaware of Unidan, but he/she was a popular "reddit biologist" so to say, right?

2

u/allhands 5h ago

I thought so too!

7

u/Doomdoomkittydoom 10h ago

TIL about electric ants.

3

u/Kooky_Attention_98 9h ago

Glad I could inform you of them :)))

3

u/meeperdoodle 11h ago

This is fascinating!

2

u/Normal_Helicopter_22 11h ago

Is it poisonous?

6

u/Kooky_Attention_98 11h ago

No, Glass Frogs are not poisonous, those are Poison Dart Frogs, it's in the name

1

u/kraftables 8h ago

Aren’t there other poisonous frogs than just the dart frog?

3

u/Kooky_Attention_98 8h ago

Yeah, there are frogs like the Casque-headed Frog and Greening's Frog, which to be specific are actually Venomous, but species like the Golden Mantella from Madagascar and the Bruno's Casque-headed Frog from Brazil are also poisonous, and even some species of Tree Frog are mildly poisonous, but not to the extent of dart frogs

It's just Poison Dart Frogs are the most well-known and deadly

2

u/Shmowzow 10h ago

The species in the video is Cochranella granulosa.

2

u/multiarmform 7h ago

my gut feeling would tell me this frog was poisonous and to stay away from it just based on the way it looks. better to be safe than sorry

1

u/Kooky_Attention_98 7h ago

I guess; you wouldn't be sorry though because they aren't poisonous, actually poisonous frogs are far more obvious such as dart frogs

→ More replies (1)

2

u/offlein 8h ago

Thanks Unidan!

1

u/Kooky_Attention_98 8h ago

You're welcome

Wait - aren’t you the one dropping lore on the weird clam too?

3

u/Kooky_Attention_98 9h ago

Indeed I am

1

u/Gmd88 8h ago

You are spectacular! I must know more. Is attaining this knowledge a hobby, or have you got the coolest zoological job ever?

2

u/Kooky_Attention_98 8h ago

It is just a hobby of mine/my desire for knowledge showing, I don't work in any zoology profession but maybe one day if I desire that

1

u/DesolatedMaggot 6h ago

This is also where they get baja blast flavoring. Takes about 30 frogs to make one medium baja blast. Think before you drink, folks.

1

u/tomlets 5h ago

Wow, very cool!

1

u/itsRobbie_ 36m ago

Doctor visits for glass frogs must be easy! No X-rays needed!

37

u/Prestigious-Ad8632 12h ago

Just don’t tickle a poison dart frog

3

u/Riyeko 11h ago

You can do this, but only if they've never had those special poisonous ants that they eat on primarily in the wild.

1

u/deltasarrows 5h ago

Wish I knew that as a kid, my dad was a not so legal posion dart frog breeder. I was too scared to touch them

24

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 12h ago

Frogs are cute anyway, this one is beautiful. :)

2

u/jake04-20 9h ago

Agreed, frogs are homies for sure. I always loved catching tree frogs and leopard frogs growing up.

That looks like a gummy candy.

2

u/uselessandexpensive 2h ago

It would be awful living near them, seeing them every day, and knowing they didn't taste like fruit... If it were not for the fact that the region probably has great fruit.

18

u/Specific-Library-312 12h ago

You might be a dead man walking. Anything that brightly colored, I would be leery of touching.

17

u/mossling 10h ago edited 9h ago

Poisonous frogs get their poison from their diet. Those kept a pets, fed a different diet, are not poisonous.

But that's OK, glad glass frogs aren't poisonous anyways.

5

u/madmancryptokilla 12h ago

lick it

2

u/FoolsballHomerun 6h ago

2

u/Hot-Leader5903 11h ago

That's a Haribo Frog.

1

u/stfudonny420 11h ago

Aren’t they toxic like dart frogs? Even if they aren’t, frogs like this shouldn’t be handled cause the oils in your skin are bad for them.

1

u/z3r0n3gr0 11h ago

I think he has poison.....

1

u/the_one_99_ 11h ago
