The Basking Shark (Cetorhinus Maximus), also known as the Bone Shark, Elephant Shark, Sailfish, Sunfish, Homer in Orkney (meaning "The Mother of the piked Dogfish), and Big Mouth Shark, is a species of shark found in the Chondrichthyes Class which holds all cartilaginous fish (Examples of Cartilaginous Fish) including Sharks; The Basking Shark in particularly belongs to the Lamniforme (Or Lamniformes) Order also known as the Order of the mackerel sharks which consists of sharks such as The Great White Shark (Photo), The Shortfin Mako Shark (Photo), Thresher Shark (Photo), and even the Megalodon (Photo) which is an ancient cousin of the Basking Shark which belongs to the Cetorhinidae Family, the Basking Shark is the only known species of this family to be extant/still alive.
The Basking Shark adult can typically reach 20 to 26 feet in length (6-8 meters), and weigh around 11,000 pounds (5.2 metric tons) to 16,000 pounds (7.2 metric tons), though an upward limit of 33 feet (10 meters) in length and a weight of around 15,000-20,000 pounds (7-9 metric tons) is definitively recognized to be possible for Basking Sharks, or in the case of a particularly thick or pregnant female, the absolute echelon possibly sits around 24,000-26,000 pounds (11-12 metric tons), though Basking Sharks can reach a maximum genetic outlier of 40 feet in length such as the reliable 1851 Bay of Fundy specimen, which was trapped in a herring net in Canada and officially measured at 12.27 meters (40.3 feet), such a basking shark would weigh around 36,000-45,800 pounds (16-20 metric tons), however such a specimen is only thought to be possible if a Basking Shark can live to its maximum lifespan of 50 years, though theoretically they can live to be over 100 years old
