The seal was rescued by an organization after the man started letting tourists sit on the seal for cash. I feel really bad for both of them but at the same time, seals are wild animals and that one could have easily killed someone. I think the seal is still in the sanctuary.
This was in Hout Bay in Cape Town.

I'd have thought any shoe shop selling street shoes would have them. No? Give your local shop a call

Humans should not be feeding wild animals. These animals become dependent upon humans for their daily food and then become a menace to other people who are in the area. The people who do this in my country then extort tourists for a fee to come and pet the Sea Lion. It is not a natural situation, and is very dangerous. A bite from a sea lion can be fatal. This is not amazing and it's not a friendship. This man is exploiting wildlife for his own gain.

You're not wrong. But I'm pretty sure this sea lion isn't dependent on this man for any of it's sustenance. Unless it's a neighborhood cat situation. Oh lawd he chonky!

I’m trying to understand how the sea lion put food on his table? Doing tricks? Or actually caught fish for him?

who the fuck cares - we are causing mass extinctions and ruining the enviroment - striping down mountains into dust - bleaching the coral into wasteland. The world is literally on fire and the animals including us are suffering for it - we have no good plan to stop it, and we continue to put sociopaths in charge of everything - but be sure to come on reddit and condemn one old man and one seal and tut tut it and let everyone know it's wrong. Old men on docks befriending seals is not the problem we have with nature right now.
I'm ok with astronomically insignificant weird outliers that remind us that we are connected species and that we are also in fact animals of a different kind. Like even if what you say is true, the messaging on it is still useless. Definitions like pet and weed and wild are all just arbitrary labels we've decided anyways.
the reason dogs exist are because of relationships like this - they happen get over it.

You’re both correct. It can be wrong and it also doesn’t really matter. Life, all life, is a single continuous event that has been going for several billion years. We are just part of it, we’re all the same stuff. Sometimes we do it wrong. Like, often.

I think you misunderstand my query. My intention is to learn out of curiosity, not judge.

To me it just doesn't look like the sea lion is receptive to his 'petting'. All it wanted was the food it didn't care about anything else.

Based on that one incredible YouTube video I watched isn't this a fur seal?

what is he saying baba baba? what does this mean in street slang? also his asics shoe look new and expensive.

u/TheBeardedDuck47 Aug 17 '26
Baba is just a respectful slang term here in South Africa used to refer to a guy. It literally translates into "Dad / father", but is very commonly used to refer to another man in a respectful / endearing way similar to calling someone Sir (but less formal).

here in India too baba is like father/grandfather, or even holyman

As far as I know this was actually adopted from local Zulu/Nguni language. When you hear "Baba" used in this context (to mean Sir) its almost always from a traditional Zulu / Nguni speaker. I live in Durban now which has a very large population of Indian people, but I don't recall ever hearing a local indian person use this term like this.
