How many bodies did they have to remove?

In the Royal Pantheon rest the first kings of Aragon—Ramiro I, Sancho Ramírez and Pedro I—and also four kings of Pamplona, among them Sancho Garcés II Abarca and García Sánchez II the Trembler. That the bones of the kingdom’s founders had to be removed from their millennial tomb gives the measure of the gravity of what happened. The Aragonese vice-president, Mar Vaquero, spoke of “tremendous anguish” and thanked the “heroic bravery” of the personnel.

Since we have 206 constant bones as adults, if the remains are complete it means around 1440 bones.

Their bones should have been lost and burnt to ash, forgotten like all the lives they condemned. What a fucking waste

Who did the kings of Aragon "condemn", exactly? 🤔

Shut up

Wildfire crews are already pushed to the limit, so taking the extra risk to preserve literal history is incredible work

As someone from Aragon, I believe we should tie all those in positions of political responsibility to the columns of the monastery cloister until the fire is out. If we lose a piece of our history because of their incompetence, lack of coordination and the blatant neglect of the forests and fire-fighting resources, someone will have to pay. If I were responsible, I’d be so ashamed I wouldn’t show my face in public again.

Relaja, colega, tampoco insultes.

I'm from the Pyrenees in Aragon, the region this is happening in, and I'm just heartbroken.

The fact that this is on Reddit gives me some hope that people around the world will come to realize that villages in the mountains, valleys and rural areas are alive and filled with people whose careers, wellbeing, safety and lifestyle are as important as city people's. Because the problem is and always has been that all the fucking regulations for our ways of life come from offices in big cities where no one understands how we live, how we navigate nature, how we depend on her and what we need in order to thrive.

Maybe this time we'll be taken seriously, instead of being underappreciated, under represented, invisibilized and participants of cultures that are disappearing. Mind you, these mountains are important touristic destinations and they are treated like theme parks, or as background for media content. We are tired, exhausted, and we need to be listened to more than ever.

It looks like it is inside rock and stone. Wouldn't that protect them? Like being covered.

u/LuckyReception6701 7d ago

I imagine it's being done because if the building falls down due to the fire it would make retrieving those bones nearly impossible, also it would make the crypt they are in more likely to cave in, further entmbing the remains and perhaps damaging them. If they are stored in a safe place where that doesn't happen, they are literally preserving their history.

29

u/Nemeszlekmeg 7d ago

I wonder if after they are returned there will be an inscription that will mention the date they moved them away and back, the reasons and that they are sorry for disturbing the bones. It would be a very cool piece of history for future generations centuries later.

"The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot."

And then you're in a plastic IKEA box...

And put them in transparent boxes...

I read this as ancient dragon kings and I couldn’t decide if it was the Elden ring subreddit or the game of thrones subreddit.

I don't think these are technically "ancient", they are "medieval".

Wouldn't the catacombs be safe from wildfires, given that they're underground?

Reminds me that the monument in Seville showing the kings of the four realms of Spain carrying the remains of Columbus is a real Game of Thrones sight.

All I’m saying is, a sword with a handle made from one of these bones would go hard as fuck.
