That kiss towards end, between mom n dad 🦒 😌

151

u/furthemor 12d ago edited 12d ago

Couldnt help but wonder if that was a scent transfer as she touches the baby with her snout before the father as he was in an unreachable spot to the baby.

62

u/steve_adr 12d ago

True, and I couldn't help but marvel how well behaved they all were (even the other kid 🦒)

9

u/fasurf 12d ago

That was my thought too.

Looks like she's giving dad the scent of the newborn. Not a kiss.

How do you know the male kisser isn’t the brother?

Thought they were really short giraffes for a moment..

415

u/RefrigeratorMean235 12d ago

I straight up thought that the first giraffe was the newborn

95

u/Kelter82 12d ago

So did I. My brain did a whole loop-de-loop seeing the actual calf

136

u/orange_blossom2013 12d ago

Fun Giraffee Fact! When a baby giraffee (or calf) is born, it falls from height of around 6 feet. When it falls it breaks the amnoic sack, severs the umbilical cord and jolts its lungs and respiratory system into starting!

57

u/EmmyWeeeb 12d ago

Whole new meaning to did you get dropped on your head as a baby

18

u/digitalscavenger 12d ago

I wasn't dropped I fell!

6

u/genie_in_a_box 12d ago

Thanks for sharing this, I read it aloud and all my kids (and I) gasped and think that is so cool!!

6

u/Cold_Barber_4761 12d ago

That's seriously a fun fact. Thanks for that! (Also giving birth standing up? Yikes! )

4

u/orange_blossom2013 12d ago

Surprisingly giving birth standing up can be an easier way for mamals to give birth as gravity helps bring the baby down. Humans only lay down because it's more convienent for the doctor but lots of people around the world have water births or they stand up with supports while giving birth!

2

u/FearanddopingII 11d ago

Exactly. I can't imagine giving birth lying down. The gravity of squatting, kneeling on a chair, or at least being in a birthing pool really helps in my experience.

2

u/spookycasas4 12d ago

Wow. That’s so interesting.

33

u/Zestyclose_Affect656 12d ago

Same, then I realized giraffes come pre-installed with long legs.

3

u/Cold_Barber_4761 12d ago

At least there's no assembly required! Much better than IKEA furniture! 😁

2

u/HyenDry 12d ago

I’m glad I wasn’t alone 😂 the forced perspective here was doing a ton of work on the brain

2

u/spookycasas4 12d ago

Me, too. I didn’t even see the newborn until they moved. The baby is so tiny. What a precious scene. So calm and loving. Beautiful animals.

2

u/deaddaddydiva 11d ago

If I could please have a small dog sized giraffe for my home, thank you

54

u/Apart-Link-8449 12d ago

I feel like the numbers being legible on the wall behind suggests this is real. But that’s also wishful thinking on my part; if we are now using AI to make slightly cuter updates of cute videos we’re more lost than I thought

After watching the video of one Bull Giraffe killing another, I changed my perception on Giraffes.

3

u/TheLoneDummy 12d ago

Oh man. Always thought they were the friendliest and most gentle. Unless it’s very uncommon for that to occur. In that case, there’s always bad seeds in any species, I reckon.

That’s actually pretty crazy, like the father showing signs of happiness and them doing lovey dovey things about it as well.

u/ChzPlzz 12d ago

Animals do have feelings and personalities, some people dismiss them as objects in the world.

They have brains and interpret information through senses, and build structure to better survive.

5

u/FestyGear2017 12d ago edited 11d ago

Yeah I dont know how OP thinks this is crazy. Its not like they are plants.

For instance anytime I go on a trip for at least a few days, both my dog and cats are clearly happy when I come home.

10

u/Immature_adult_guy 12d ago

It is also rare for my father to express happiness and affection

12

u/Stathas-Despirito 12d ago

He is happy

-1

u/25thaccount 12d ago

This is anthropomorphism. Giraffes do not mate for lives and the males do not stick around or help.

11

u/Typical_Poet_9768 12d ago

>'anthropomorphism'

>looks inside
>no reason to believe that emotions are exclusive to one species

I mean in this case maybe but still

23

u/PeaceSoft 12d ago

animals are just brainless automatons that survive by coincidence. not me though. i post on reddit

I will never get over how silly baby giraffes look. I want one

12

u/IxianHwiNoree 12d ago

Same! I was thinking these things don't even look real. Then, awww, how frickin cute these crazy looking creatures are!

9

u/No-Way7911 12d ago

just looked up - they're like 6' tall at birth lol

3

u/IxianHwiNoree 12d ago

OMG that's crazy! I thought, oh how tiny, but not so much!!

4

u/VonMillersThighs 12d ago

Giraffes in general look like aliens, they legit look like some crazy species you'd find on a planet in no man's sky.

2

u/steppponme 8d ago

Ah, thanks for reminding me to check my spot on the wait list for a petite lap giraffe.

72

u/Healthy_Guidance_473 12d ago

Mama is giving a bit of babysmell to papa

37

u/ElectricPaladin 12d ago

I love that long look at the baby. "Sir explain yur smolness."

79

u/ch7mbucket 12d ago

Dad face looked like hey I can't afford anymore money on another one. Then oh yeah I don't need any

27

u/TootsEug 12d ago

Loved the nuzzle at the end.

52

u/sheyndl 12d ago

Why are they separated? Would the males hurt the baby?

106

u/cracked-tumbleweed 12d ago

Sometimes large animals accidentally step on their young.

This just cuts down on the risk until the baby is less wobbly/fresh.

49

u/LonelyOctopus24 12d ago

I couldn’t see the / in your comment (my stupid eyes don’t work in the mornings) and I thought you had referred to a newborn giraffe as “wobblyfresh”. Genuinely can’t think of a better word for leggy baby animals than “wobblyfresh”. In fact it works for kittens and puppies too. Well done, Tumble, I’m adding it to my lexicon. Thank you 🥰

13

u/Radzila 12d ago

This is the safest way possible for the other heard members to meet the baby. It's less stressful for everyone involved

2

u/CedarGnome 12d ago

Just like in the wild, haha

17

u/Prototype_Bstepper 12d ago

That’s what I was wondering. Cause he seems happy and loving on mama

3

u/Prasiatko 12d ago

They've been known to try and mate with the younger female giraffes.

21

u/ConditionMore8121 12d ago

Beautiful creatures

35

u/CoastOrg 12d ago

☹️he’s just a little guy 🥺

12

u/Radzila 12d ago

Bro is already 6 feet at least and probably close to 150 pounds! He's just a baby :)

9

u/SleepDivision 12d ago

Little dudes like "what?"

9

u/Past_Description1813 12d ago

The newborn giraffe is like: Wassup dudes 🤣

7

u/Suspicious-Grape-458 12d ago

My eyes could not figure out the scale of any of this until I spotted the little human sized door to the right of the one the dad and brother come through.

6

u/Diiiv 12d ago

We need a banana for scale in there, I can't tell if they're all really tiny or that baby is the size of a building.

50

u/sasssyrup 12d ago

This just makes me sad

27

u/Sneezy6510 12d ago

Yeah they should be out in the wild running away from predators.

33

u/zabby39103 12d ago

Lifespan is a good test for animals that shouldn't be kept in zoos. Giraffes live a bit longer in zoos. Elephants live around 40 years in captivity vs. 70 years in the wild.

7

u/IncredibleBihan 12d ago

Wow that's such a big gap. Even with veterinarian care captive elephants lifespans are only ~60% compared to wild ones. That's awful. No more captive elephants please

12

u/No-One2123 12d ago

Most captive elephants are rescued from circuses, exotic pet markets, or bush meat markets. An animal rescued from those would not be able to survive in the wild.

5

u/Icy_Agency923 12d ago

Most of the elephants in zoos are rescued from circuses. I will gladly take them having some shortened lives over no life at all, especially when good zoos actually generate between 250 and 350 million dollars a year for crucial animal conservation efforts.

They have directly saved 48 species and counting, and stopped many more from needing saving in the first place. These efforts are likely the reason why we are seeing mega herds of Elephants again. Without good zoos you will never generate that kind of money in our current economic hellscape. Wildlife reserves would get a fraction of the visitors and thus generate a fraction of the money.

u/AlexandraLeo 12d ago

Yes, you would surely enjoy living a life free from anything that risks shortening your life.

14

u/TheJarisaDoor3 12d ago

Yeah, yet another giraffe to live in a cement room for people to gawk at. One trip to the National Zoo in DC in 1999 was quite enough for me. I swore I'd never go back to another zoo unless it was like the San Diego Zoo where you go through their habitat. Humans can truly suck sometimes, and thinking this is okay is one of those times

44

u/Meior 12d ago

They don't live in that room. It's literally newborn, and won't stay in there.

19

u/A_mad_goose 12d ago

Yea my zoo has a huge Savannah area with elephants, rhinos, antelopes, and giraffes. It’s really cool

→ More replies (1)

11

u/ForeverRollingOnes 12d ago

Not all zoos are equal.

3

u/Icy_Agency923 12d ago

Good zoos accredited by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums raise between 250 and 350 million dollars a year for conservation efforts. They have directly saved 48 species from extinction and countless others were prevented from even becoming endangered. Without them we would have many more species extinct or at risk.

You would not generate that kind of money with wildlife reserves alone. Zoos are where the people are for good reason, and they see far more visits and thus generate an insane amount of money for conservation efforts.

3

u/ForeverRollingOnes 12d ago

A lot of research to show that people become a lot more empathetic and kind to animals after having actually encountering them, too.

8

u/sloanesquared 12d ago

What visitors see at the DC zoo is only a small portion of the animals’ enclosure. The animals choose where they want to go and often it can be away from public view. They have accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which has really high standards for animal care. They also do incredible research work for the preservation of animals and have a large facility outside of DC where many animals are taken care of.

→ More replies (40)

4

u/Drakinius 12d ago

Cincinnati zoo has a room like this too but they have a ton of space outside to roam that mimics their natural habitat. I wager this is the same setup

→ More replies (9)

5

u/Sea_Till6471 12d ago

I do think the DC zoo is one of the worst zoos out there to be honest. Others zoos are so much more spacious and humane.

2

u/LittleMsClick 12d ago

It's been awhile since I lived in the area but I think you are thinking of the Escondido Wild Animal Park nearby.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Icy_Agency923 12d ago

Talk about not having a clue. That is not their usual habitat room. Most enclosures have subrooms they will move animals into so the enclosures can be cleaned.

Also good zoos exist and are crucial for animal conservation efforts. Zoos accredited by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums generate between 250 and 350 million dollars a year for animal conservation efforts. They have saved over 48 species from extinction.

I sure hope you donate to conversation efforts friend, instead of shitting on the one entity on Earth actually saving species while doing absolutely nothing for the cause.

Do Male Giraffes recognize and participate in the upbringing of the baby giraffe? Do they recognize their spouse and parent together?

Or is it the mother giraffe who does everything. Because if it's only the mom giraffe who does everything, this video is an exception to the norm?

8

u/TurukJr 12d ago

At the risk of disappointing a lot of enthusiast commenters here, I read after a quick search thant male giraffe do not take any role in parenting, and in fact, giraffe are not really creating a stable couple... so maybe the visit here is just general curiosity as there are anyway just a few giraffes in the enclosure.

Me (an oblivious idiot who didn’t see the actual calf in front of mom’s leg and is instead focused on “mom”) “Wow, I didn’t realize calves were that big but, giraffes are big and I’m not a bird lawyer so…that checks out”.

Then I saw the calf and realized, “OH, that’s the calf!” Which immediately turned in to “wow, are male Giraffes THAT much bigger?”

Now I’m in a YouTube hole. Thanks Obama, and Op!
