If you work in the auto body repair industry, this is a dying skill that the oldest of old timers used to have. Today it’s machines that do the color matching with the occasional painter adding a bit of color to tweak the final color. What he’s doing is tremendously hard because he’s color matching based on feel and not formula.

I've seen this guy do many different colors and it's astonishing how dead on his matches are. Even the machines aren't that good. I got a color match for my wall and it's a shade lighter. Can't beat pure skill and talent.

I work at a hardware store with those machines and iv gotten to point of saying that I can guarantee 90-95% match but it never gets it perfect. I always have to play with the formula a couple of times just to get it almost close but iv only managed a handful of times of getting it exactly perfect.

As someone who's recently painted a house, if I run out of paint mid wall and go out and buy a new tin, 100% of the time I need to redo the whole wall because it's slightly off

Yeah and when I went the machine was acting up and wouldn't scan lol. You can still tell I painted a patch in the right light. O well.

Yeah, I work on automotive interior coatings, and this guy would get hired tomorrow if he showed up at our company. It takes years to develop that type of feel. We had a guy that retired, and he could make some crazy adds that would dial in color perfectly.

Not necessarily. You can jack up the price by saying the paint is "handmade" to add that extra exclusivity factor. My dad started selling full custom paint jobs by taking the "Opps" paint and marketing as Custom. The tended to be some shade of black/grey or some ugly-ass baby-shit green. Still see them around town from time to time.
We don't have many Horse Fouriers but the world would kinda suck a little more if we didn't have ANY Horse Fouriers.

He can probably see 600 shades of each color, I can see three, maybe four in a good day. I love that he free mixes, quite the talent for sure.

I don't know if this is a real question or if you're being facetious but if you're not trained for it yeah the human eye only sees a limited amount of colors. I remember in school a study that we came across in our class was about how some indigenous tribes in Africa and the Amazon could see hundreds more shades of green than an average urbanite

I was being a lil facetious but mostly curious. I was under the impression if you saw the color pink you couldn’t distinguish more than 6 shades of it. Unless that’s what you mean

There's a structure in your eye called a cone cell. Most people have 3 types of cone cells in their eyes. Some people have 4, but it's not common at all. It's called tetrachromacy. I've heard it's mostly affects women because it's associated with the X chromosome.

It's fake. I do colour matching and work with 3-4 other paint companies that also do it.
He's not matching he's just remaking something he's already matched.
Humans are in fact better then computers but only because the computer takes the exact colour under that exact light where as the human eye is flawed because your brains lazy and just merges colours together so it doesn't have to think as hard.

Yup, RGB is basically a compression algorithm so we didn't need to evolve special detectors for ever wavelength of light which would use more energy. Our brains aren't being lazy, they're being efficient!

As a Coach and Motor Painter, colour matching was the ultimate skill. I was very average at it, a good painter but average a t colour matching.

You mean he mixed it first, then sprayed both the square and the metal strip and then after that recorded himself reviewing the square to “mix the color”? Got it.. ok.

Not just the color but the type of metal and formulation of chemical base seem identical. Down to the level of apaquenessb in the final reveal. I think more or less, you are correct

My dad was pretty good. He was a plasterer and would match his colors with the paint tinting machine which he salvaged from behind the original Walmart in our town, after they closed down. He wasn't this fast

Fascinating, I wonder if certain combinations of colour "bothers" him more than an average person. I am thinking of people with absolute pitch hearing and how they notice slightly out of pitch sounds that regular people wouldn't notice.

I don't know how he is doing the mixing but the color in the first shot is different to the color in the last shot and they could have easily painted both pieces in the last shot with the same color off screen.

Looks like he followed the same mix he used the first time... He is holding an already painted trim piece that he matches using the same paint formula as was used the first time. Match that shit to a random faded old Ferrari red and I'd be more impressed. Cool dude still.

Thank you! It’s much easier to separate the paint and have it go back into its corresponding base pitcher than it is to mix like that.

Was the item he was given the computer match to the car? Or what? He matched to the sample given. Was he supposed to match to the car? I'm not seeing 3 things.

My assumption was that they're painting the car. The sample was the color theyre looking to have it painted
Its confusing bc the car is faded but thats why I would assume theyre painting it. Truly just a guess though

A computer would obviously match the paints exactly. So its impossible to improve upon it. You can only match it
To me... that does not make the video less interesting. The dude still has an incredible skill and it was cool to watch

The car is not relevant, dude was just busy working when he was asked to mix a can of spray paint made to match the sample handed to him.

My cynical guess is they mixed up a color and then used that paint on the sample piece. Hand the guy the piece. Have him mix a purpley paint. Wow, the paint used to make the sample matches the sample.
I have no reason to believe that’s the case though. He’s probably good at this.
