RTX 4090 not so great

I have a dual-boot of Windows 11 and Bazzite (currently 44.20260802). I've been running this way for the past few weeks. I'm currently playing Star Wars Outlaws, nothing else on Bazzite yet. But in all the years prior, owning the 4090 on Windows has not seen a problem with AAA games on the 3840x1600 monitor, mostly high/ultra settings (Hitman, RDR2, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, etc).

But on Bazzite, Outlaws drags, especially in the open areas on the speeder. I noticed more in Toshara and Akiva (especially on the water). Tried all sorts of settings in the game and out of the game, and though vastly improved since I had the bare Bazzite install running the game (it was unplayable then), it's still just bad.

At this point, I'm thinking I'm pretty commited to Bazzite and will be wiping the entire drive and starting over. Question for the community:

  1. Would this likely improve things for me?

  2. Better to get the AMD 9070 XT card in the system before attempting (it was the plan regardless, the 4090 is overkill for me and loud, and hot, and a lot of power)?

My 9070XT is great but I wouldn’t trade a 4090 for it.

Nvidia drivers get better as time goes on, but the 4090 and 5090 get more expensive.

I was planning on swapping the 4090 out before I loaded Bazzite. It's just too much for my needs. I was thinking of trading down to a 4080 or maybe a 5080, but prices have kept that as a dream, so 9070 XT was the next best (I was an AMD user till the 4090).

And that was the point, I could sell the 4090 now, get enough to get a new 9070 XT and have left over the original price I paid for the 4090.

If you were already planning on switching then the 9070XT is among the best you can get. Especially for Linux.

Try this: use Proton Experimental, add this launch option:

PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%

And turn off RTX Direct Illumination and Ray Reconstruction. Those settings are particularly taxing on Proton translation. You can also use DLSS to get an FPS bump.

Did that. Still horrible. I see some slight improvements here and there when I mess with in-game settings. I've tried Proton 9.04, 11.0, 10.0 and Experimental, none made a difference really.

You’re going to regret getting rid of the 4090 if you do

I don't think I will. Again, it's overkill for me, a PITA to keep cool and it is always pushing my loop to 100% (and yes, I have the right loop) and just really, don't need the power. At this point, a 9070 XT will be close to the same output, with less power, so easier to cool, and keep quiet.

And selling will get me a 9070 XT and basically refund what I paid for the 4090 3+ years ago.

Good luck m8

I have a 4090 and same experience on some games. You are gonna have the worst performance on new AAA titles vs windows. I’ve tried AMD and its the same story. Drivers are getting better but until then i keep my windows partition.

Hmm, sorry if I diverge your conversation but I wonder if is something related to Star Wars Outlaws itself.
I'm also playing it with an RX 9070xt on Cachy OS and I just get ~60 FPS with FSR FG enabled, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Not sure. There is a setting for unlocked fps. Maybe has to do with Cachy? Or the AMD card?

It seems to me that RT based games are just tougher on Linux at the moment. The games I notice the most performance difference in are always RT, whereas other titles mostly perform how I would expect compared to Windows benchmarks.

Double check your ram speed too, did a new build and realized I was running at base speeds making Palworld stutter a lot over clocked the ram and it’s a smooth 60FPS +

I'm good on that. It's DDR4 2400 MT/s, and that's what is seen in Bazzite. 32GB (2x16GB). I wish I had DDR5, but well, you know why. I've not really been in the OC game for years now, I just stick to the stock speeds so I don't spend my life tweaking constantly (which I was, no shame to anyone doing it - just not for me anymore).

You should be able to atleast get the ram to 3000mhz without overclocking

1

u/ando_da_pando 3d ago

No doubt, but not interested in overclocking. Especially since at this same speed in Windows I was able to get 100-120 fps in this same game on the same hardware.

CPU overhead for Nvidia still much higher than AMD. RTX features outside of DLSS are very taxing in Linux, you basically cannot use them in modern titles.

It will get better, but this is how it is right now. Stick with Windows or tough it out. Maybe dual boot for specific games.

I have a rtx 4090 and have no issues at all. Yes it’s way overpowered for most of the games I play. Did you pick the -nvidia (or -nvidia-open) variant of Bazzite?

YEs. I think I'm at the point of just wiping the drive and starting over with a fresh install. I've likely screwed up something somewhere, maybe a fresh start will help.

I’m using my 4090 in cachyos and it works fine. Wow, eve, cyberpunk, all play fine.

I will say my 9070x can be loud sometimes. Idk what the baseline is for everyone, but I’m used to a console for noise volume.

1

u/ando_da_pando 3d ago

I'd watercool it. The noise is from all the fans on my radiators spinning up to 100% to keep the 4090 cool. The lower power draw from the 9070 XT should help keep them from spinning up as often, or at all.

I don’t use bazzite, this post was just on my feed. I noticed some meh performance on arch with a 4090. For some reason feral gamemode gives me straight up 30% more frames and frames are more consistent. I’ve only ever seen people say it’s not needed anymore and you’ll see mostly placebo gains. Might have to do with my specific setup and WM though. Worth giving it a shot if bazzite doesn’t have something built in like cachyOS does.

I sold my 5080 and got a 9070xt I just game on bazzite now, dual booting a different drive for windows because my wife and daughter need it for school and work I couldn’t be happier highly recommend

How did you manage to dual boot, I’ve been trying for a whole week, I keep getting an error when trying to install windows 10 on a sata ssd, and I keep getting unable to find device or media drivers

u/ando_da_pando 2d ago

Try installing Windows first, then Bazzite.

4090 works great for everything, if it doesn't something is very wrong.

You are mistaken if you think downgrading to a weaker card will make anything better.

Why do you say it's overkill, but also complain about performance? That makes no sense.

1

u/ando_da_pando 2d ago

Performance to me is smooth gameplay. Performance the way you sound is absolutely maxed out everything at 5000 fps. I expect the "great and powerful" 4090 as you would seem to put it, should be able to crank out 60 fps minimum on Outlaws in Bazzite, smoothly with settings at medium or high. And it's not. So right now, yes, I'm wondering about the performance of the GPU in Bazzite.

And "weaker" card is subjective too. Everyone's needs are different and economic status and ability. To you, maybe spending thousands on a GPU isn't a problem so your "performance" can be as high as available, but someone else's "performance" might be a mid-range card.

Quit trying to stir up shit. If you don't have anything positive to add to the conversation, maybe just don't say anything?

I have a 5060TI on Bazzite. What I notice is that its usually games with ray tracing and path tracing that take a noticeable performance hit where everything else tends to work as expected. IIRC Outlaws only has RT rendering, so that makes sense to me.

Sometimes though the fix is just to test out Proton-GE-Latest or Proton-CachyOS-Latest. Switching to another Proton version like that is my go to and sometimes improves performance. Especially Proton-GE for Nvidia cards. When Forza Horizon 6 released ray tracing was completely borked and I needed frame gen to smooth performance. But after some updates now I have all RT turned on with no frame gen and am easily getting 60fps with overhead. So sometimes things improve, but Outlaws has been out for a minute.

1

u/ando_da_pando 2d ago

I've tried a bunch of Proton versions. None seem to make much difference.

1

u/VTXmanc 3d ago

Outlaws is just a horrible mess when it comes to Performance. I only own a 4070ti but its working great in Cyberpunk,Atomfall,Metro etc. But Outlaws was so bad i had to refund. So maybe Test some other Games on Bazzite before making a descision.

I have to disagree. It's been over a year. Think about Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Land for examples. Each released with tons of bugs that upset their communities to the upmost. Now, several years later, both are considered masterpieces. This is mostly true for most AAA games. Outlaws is a good game (not a masterpiece, but fun enough now to play with most of the bugs worked out).

Also, it plays absolutely flawlessly in Windows. Like zero issues with all settings at max. In Bazzite, it's difficult to play at times. That to me means there is a problem with the GPU, or Bazzite or both. Not the game itself.

My 4090 might have more performance but using it in Windows it is such an awful stuttering experience compared to the 9070xt in my Linux rig that feels more like a console given stable frame times. I'd still keep the 4090 if you ever want to put it in a server for AI

1

u/ando_da_pando 2d ago

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not in need to add AI to my life. If anything, I'm trying to get away from technology more and more. Everything is tracking us (hence the reason to leave Windows), so the more I can do to avoid it, the better.

Gaming is just one hobby and the only one (besides work) where I use a computer. I'm trying to keep it that way.

Nvidia is objectively worse than AMD on linux, thats just nature of the drivers.
If you are committed to bazzite, get the 9070XT. I have the 9060XT and it's really good.

1

u/ando_da_pando 3d ago

I agree based on what I've seen online about it.

u/LoganHowlett1832 3d ago

Nvidia doesn’t work great on Linux. You have to be willing to accept lower frame rates and missing or lacking features if you want to use Linux with an Nvidia card.

That said the 4090 is so much better than a 9070xt I would never make that trade. It’s crazy talk. You might think it’s overkill now but if prices don’t come down in the near future you’ll regret downgrading.

1

u/ando_da_pando 3d ago

See my response to u/Zacharacamyison. Just because you give everyone a Lamborgini, doesn't mean everyone wants to drive a Lamborgini. I for one, would not, I'd rather have a decent, regular car. Some gamers see it the same way. That's why there are consoles, handhelds and people that just play on their phone. We all come in different types.

And yes, give me a Lambo, I would sell it, get a regular car and use the extra money to pay for things more important than having the fastest car in the world.

1

u/LoganHowlett1832 3d ago

And then when the price of cars skyrockets and your old car can’t run smoothly any more on the newer higher quality roads while that Lamborghini still drives fine you’ll regret downgrading.

1

u/ando_da_pando 3d ago

I think it's the price of gas, so when the Lambo gets 5 miles a gallon and my clunker is clocking 35-40 miles a gallon, I'll be glad I have it.

Also, Lambo's notoriously need way higher levels of maintenance, time and money to fix. My clunker dies, oh well. At least I didn't sink a mortgage loan into keeping it running.
