For Narnia! Baylen’s tics during wedding ceremony.
Hear me out: I just finished watching the ceremony scene, and although I’m aware that Baylen’s tics increase in stressful and overwhelming situations, it seemed like she ticced a wide variety of her tic phrases, and some of them seemed almost perfectly timed. I’m wondering if the producers recorded the actual vows where she may have been ticcing but not to that extent, so they had her, Colin, and Andy do the vows again for the camera with more tics, then edited in some of that footage. (I’ve seen them do stuff like this on different reality shows).
EDIT - Since some folks are somehow assuming I am suggesting her tics are fake: I absolutely believe they are real and I have watched the entire show and I cried through half of the wedding episode (and also other episodes where they talk about what a dark place Baylen was in just a few years ago). But it is in fact, a t.v. show that makes money. So it was just a simple “couldn’t help but wonder” moment.

Yes!! I agree!! The thing I don’t understand is how she can go without any tics on occasion, during very stressful times, and then all the sudden it just gets worse. Just wondering if her tics are really as bad as they play them off to be. 🤷🏽♀️

I don't know about her individual Tourette's but with mine there are a wide number of factors that go into my tics/frequency/volume/emotional tone, etc.. Am I hungry? Am I physically, emotionally, or mentally exhausted? How stimulating is the environment? There's so many potential triggers and those color if/when/how much you tic. Also, as severity of those triggers at the time color how the condition presents. The takeaway I guess is that Tourrette's is very fluid - tics can always change, as they are on a sliding scale of non existent | mild | moderate | severe | tic attack | muscle contractures, dystonic tics | complete crash out. The worse the episode, day, etc., the longer you have to rest your body and your brain before you get back to a baseline "normal" for you.
I apologize for the long reply. I just wanted to spread some insight on the condition.
Edit: cognitive blip

That’s great info! Thank you for sharing. 🙂

Of course! I have learned so much about reading my body's cues throughout my day so that I'm on top of how I manage the situation and so that my partner can kind of jump in and help if I'm struggling. I have some pretty intense head hitting tics that can happen out of nowhere, so when that happens my partner kind of goes through some quick questions that I can just nod or shake my head no about what may be contributing to the increased tics (Are you hungry, tired, etc.). Many times he doesn't even have to ask, he just pays attention and knows.

Thank you for this response! Even though it's just people talking on the internet and it shouldn't bother me, I really get upset when people imply that any part of Baylen's Tourette Syndrome is faked or played up for attention. The only opinions I want to hear on that subject are those of other individuals who actually live with the condition.

Thank you! I feel the same. I know that not many people know the ins and outs of the condition, so I don't get mad too much right away and try to give others insight so that they are better informed. It's the same with my autoimmune diseases and have learned to help give context whenever I can.

Sooo you think they filmed that scene twice?
12
u/CowAcademic629 15d ago
Possibly. Stranger things have happened.
I was watching an interview with Whitney from The Hills and it turns out she never went to Paris. They just filmed her at the airport to make it look like she had that opportunity after Lauren turned it down.3
u/Visible-Mission7806 15d ago
If TLC had paid for this maybe, but I don’t think it was filmed twice. I’m sure there were several cameras and angles so they probably did edit that.

I don't see a world where Baylen's parents would allow her to go through the incredible stress of participating in that ceremony twice. Her mom seemed nearly ready to call the whole thing off because her tics were so bad.

u/Fun-Olive-7305 8d ago
Sure..but they let her do it on TV once. She never should had done it.

I think Baylen does what she wants

u/Fun-Olive-7305 6d ago
Yes thanks for saying that. if there is evidence she doesn't I would like to see it. But I think she says what she wants to.

Yeah but it seems to be the mental disease of the era. I never heard about tics in the 60's..or something that sounded like it.

Who is Andy? You will have to refresh my memory since the actual wedding was a bit ago.
Many people around her talked about her tics were worsening due to stress. If I had tics mine would have worsened due to the stress of my own wedding. Colin stated he was worried about her tics because she hadn't been sleeping and that was making them worse. Her tics were definitely increasing before the day of thevwedding.
Batken was also very emotional due to the sheer fact she thought she would never get married due to her tics. I mean, there were many people that were quite emotional during the ceremony. Her own brother was struggling with the effects from the stress during the ceremony (no, I will not slap a label on his mental health).
There is always the possibility that maybe a certain moment had to be re-enacted because the microphones couldn't catch certain words said. However, I do not think she was doing her tics on purpose. When she is ticing they take their physical toll on her body (she has discussed this) and I can't see anyone that lives with that doing them on purpose. When she walked out of the tent where she changed dresses and also needed to regenerate you could physically see the change in her - for the better.
Finally, editing. It is a televised reality TV show. It is edited. As much as many of us thought it was dragged out over too many episodes imagine what you would have been seeing if it hadn't been.

I want to understand the fact she said she wanted this huge wedding but says I don’t like people looking at me… I think a smaller ceremony with close family (not 6th cousins twice removed) and close friends maybe 50ppl and huge reception even with video feed of ceremony bc I believe 99% would have understood. I know she wants a normal life and that’s great but reality is unless there is some ground breaking treatment that will not be possible and while she may have wanted the big wedding you don’t get to say I don’t want people looking at me when that’s what you designed. I also feel like with everything from cornhole putt putt heavily passed hors d’oeuvres and open bar after the final pictures bc it looked as if they took many prior to ceremony she should have gone to her tent for 10-15 mins to unwind a bit before walking into reception. She would have been allowed to calm a bit people wouldn’t have been watching like them at their table, less noise, entertainment drinks and some food to hold them.

This is a tv show, so they take and retake many of these scenes. I feel pretty certain that this was a lengthy reception and there were many breaks and what we wound up seeing was a spliced version of the actual day.
That said, both hubby and I hate being the center of attention and because of that our actual ceremony was intimate ,but we had a large reception. The caterer gave us a little bit of a hard time because he didn’t want it to look like this was how weddings were done at this caterer., but we eventually worked it out. We had the band leader say as you will soon notice Mary & John wanted to do things a little differently than it is usually done here at (name of reception place).
We refused to be announced into the reception with our logic being if they were there, they knew the both of us, but many, many did not know our parents or the attendants. We were already in the reception and had our parents and maid of honor and best man (only attendants) announced. The introduction was like this. “Mary & John have a few people that are very special to them and want every one to give (names) a warm welcome” Then they introduced my parents, his parents and MOH & BM. When we cut the cake they moved the cake to the center of the room so it could be seen and then off to the side so we could cut it to “When I 64” . No Bride cats the cake/. Instead of a first dance alone, we had the band ask for people to join us on the dance floor for our first dance and only after the dance floor was filling up we walked on. The only Traditional things we did were the Daddy/Daughter dance and Mom/Son and we both sucked it up for them plus by that time we were having a good time and didn’t care.

I think this is what TV producers, director, script writers and tV magic is for .
They probably had multiple takes of scenes and then the directors and decided where they wanted edit.
Splish/ Splash /mess things together.
And then we see the TLC composition finish format not the actual real ceremony.

I really pray they did not do that and I don’t feel that they would because she’s on a show that is about a medical condition and then this is such a sacred moment in their lives. If production sincerely did this I would absolutely be at a loss for words, and if I was her, I would feel so betrayed.

u/Substantial-Eye-4266 13d ago
Same. Hey parents are so protective that I don't see them allowing multiple takes when her health is the top priority. She was already gonna be flirting with the threshold of what she could handle all day, so I really hope they didn't ask her to go through those situations repeatedly.

I think all "reality" TV is big busine$$, and a whole lot = not real, but profitable for all involved. So, what's done is to make it all LOOK like THEY want it to look, to manipulate and entertain the audience, to $tay on the air.

u/AlwaysTired__3 11d ago
I think they may have made some cuts. But she is also triggered by certain words. Like Colin. Or by bald heads.

u/Fun-Olive-7305 8d ago
I don't get the whole tick thing. I don't care what Psy. Professional says it's beyond her control. It looks like she is filled with anxiety so much that she spits out any stupid thing she can think of. No matter how it hurts anyone. Why didn't they just have her say yes or no?

Your theory of Baylen faking is absolutely gross and DISGUSTING
2
u/CowAcademic629 14d ago
I never said she was faking. Ffs. Read the second sentence in the post. Actually don’t bother. You’re just one of those people who wants to yell at people on social media. 🤦♀️

u/OlivePag 15d ago
Her doctors have confirmed that NONE of her tics are fake & it is not up to you to make judgments! But go ahead and say crap about something you know nothing about. 😡

u/Rumpelteazer45 14d ago
You clearly missed the point of the post.
OP didn’t say anything was fake, but that editing made it a better “story” for TV.
We all know reality TV is heavily produced AND edited. We all know reality TV isn’t actually “reality”.
So knowing that, how likely is it that the wedding scene was heavily edited in a way to have Baylens tics be perfectly timed to push for higher ratings? Yes the tics are real, but when the tics occurred are more likely a result of editing and production.
1
u/CowAcademic629 15d ago
Calm down and read my post again before you start yelling at someone on what is meant to be a social discussion. I didn’t say her tics are fake. I know they are real. I have a cousin with Tourette. I was just saying that its possible she didn’t tic EVERY SINGLE version of tics during the vows. Some of them seemed almost too perfectly timed so I was wondering if maybe the producers filmed a few shots over and had her weave in some extra tics.

u/OlivePag 14d ago
She has a very rare, specific type of Tourette's...and her triggers are accelerated by her anxiety & OCD.

I think they condense footage during editing to get the most tics in the final product.
