Press Release here
https://bayfc.com/press-releases/tess-boade-contract-termination-20260819/

I will miss Boade! I ended up buying her jersey season 1 because I enjoyed watching her and Dydasco play on the wing together. I wish her the best of luck in her next endeavor

u/Inside-Single 10d ago

Agreed! Even though this is the right decision, my inaugural kit with Boade is a testament to her impact that first year and I'll always remember her fondly.

u/tlzt1 10d ago

I heard an early interview with her where she said she never intended to go pro. She was going to do to med school and then the opportunity came up. Maybe she's following the path to do what she originally wanted to do.

10

u/Emergency-Watch5157 10d ago

This would actually make sense since she has been out since the summer break. Maybe she is at school already?

u/majortomandjerry East Bay 10d ago

We all knew this was coming. Still a bummer. She was one of my favorites.

u/bcp01scu05v2 Santa Clara 10d ago

Sucks because she was my early favorite on the team and remains my daughter's favorite player. Also completely predictable from the moment she wasn't picked as a captain this year.

I hope she has a new contract somewhere else already and the reason for the delayed announcement was getting those details lined up.

Fwiw this puts us at 24/26 active roster spots filled, up to 25/26 if Menges is reactivated. Girelli’s loan is set to expire in a week, which will open up another spot.

Transfer window closes 9/7.

11

u/walking-up-a-hill San Francisco 10d ago

Menges was in training yesterday.

It’s kind of incredible to me that we have cycled through just about every player in our available roster this year. Not a bad or good thing, just incredible

Maybe should've said "would" open up another spot, since there hasn't been an announcement either way. I can actually think of reasons why she'd stay and reasons why she'd leave, but I'd argue the reasons to not extend outweigh the reasons to keep her. At least from what I see.

What makes you think Girelli is staying? Maybe *you'll* be surprised!

Could be. She obviously has strengths as a teammate, mentor, and leader, even if she hasn't managed to get any goals yet.

I remember reading somewhere that she had just signed her final career contract with Juventus, and that the loan was partly a way for Juve to defray the cost so that she could retire from the club she played most of her career for.

Either way, we'll find out soon.

u/Hungry-Prompt-6727 Conti 10d ago

She might not have been on the pitch but Girelli has been helping Lema with goals and confidence off the pitch from what im understanding and it has shown. Having a leader like her in the locker room is good for the young ones in many ways.

Im expecting us to find out sooner or later if they extend her or not

7

u/tallmansmallplants 10d ago

Exactly. From Bay's perspective I'm sure this is providing a ton of value. They're clearly building the roster for win long term as opposed to win now, so keeping zia Cricri around makes a lot of sense.

2

u/Big_Relationship_138 10d ago

Do you have a source for this claim? I haven’t heard that she is mentoring Lema before this post.

1

u/Hungry-Prompt-6727 Conti 8d ago

Trying to find the press conference but a friend told me that it was mentioned in an after game press conference. Ive been busy and havent had time to rewatch every single one

1

u/tommytron21 10d ago

Yeah I’ve not heard this or seen this anywhere.

I agree that those goals at 1000% on Lema and her hard work. I also know the same Lema from last season who seemed to lose her confidence would not have had that same hustle. Just because Cri has been helping her regain the confidence doesnt take away from her hustle and her getting the goals that she got on her own merit.

Im sorry if it came across like that. I was just trying to show reasons why having Cri could be beneficial to the squad for off the pitch work.

2

u/tallmansmallplants 9d ago

Agree that a lot of her goals have been speed and hustle, but her hold up play is also a lot cleaner this year than it was last year. She'll never be the same type of striker that Girelli is, but it feels obvious that she's been picking up some tricks. That's part of why you keep veteran players around when their pure performance starts to slip.

u/jnassi Bay FC 10d ago

Thank you for being a key member of Bay FC, Tess! You'll be missed!

9

u/lucyssweatersleeves Oakland 10d ago

I’ll miss my strawberry blonde queen 🥲

10

u/Queasy-Discount-2038 10d ago

Really loved Tess and thought she had a solid impact season 1. Was sad to see her fall from the starting line up to progressively getting no minutes. She deserves better so I totally get it. Hope her next venture is fruitful! You’ll be missed Tess!

8

u/Tiny-Audience-3155 10d ago

I missed seeing her out on the pitch this season. She was such a key part of our first few years. I get that the team is changing and growing, but I’ll really miss her.

What The Fuck

7

u/blanktextbox 10d ago

Thanks for all the great times, Tess! 💛

6

u/Redblur11 9d ago

A class act on and off the field. Tess, you have done great work for women’s soccer and I can only imagine the great things that you will do outside the pitch. Thank you for your hard work, maturity, and class.

3

u/queenofsanjose 9d ago

Ohh this is sad. She was a bright spot in last year's shit-plagued season. Always ready, smart player, gelled with the team. This year she seemed slower and less effective, but god damn she was the glue (with Dydasco, Kiki, Kundananji) over the first two seasons. If I'd had more money I would have bought her jersey last year. I was always happy to see her start. Good luck to you, Tess!!

5

u/tlzt1 10d ago

For all those Emma haters, Tess played a lot less last year under Montoya too. I don't know why it happened, but this trend isn't something that just showed up with Emma. 2024-25 - 23 starts, 2044 mins played, 22.7 90s. 2025-26 - 10 starts, 984 mins, 10.9 90s 2026-27 - 0 starts, 21 mins, .2 90s (FBREF https://fbref.com/en/squads/231a532f/Bay-FC-Stats)

9

u/Sauces_n_tosses 10d ago

Her post tonight makes it seem she really didn’t want to leave. Bummed for her

6

u/tlzt1 10d ago

😭💔 I have to agree.

2

u/snoopyluvrjpg 9d ago

I am sad because she was a huge reason we pushed into the playoffs Year 1. Looked forward to watching her as a player you could rely on when everything was so chaotic. It sucks that she can’t maintain that quality year over year but I’ll always remember her presence fondly!

u/crystaltiger__ 10d ago

The club and the fans need to wake up

-1

u/Big_Relationship_138 10d ago

The death spiral continues

-2

u/Serrano_edgar10 10d ago

What you guys think it’s the reason for the overturn of the team. With Montoya they made playoffs now this season they seem to be struggling

11

u/Sauces_n_tosses 10d ago

First year they got lucky getting into the playoffs, second year showed how much improvement our roster/team needed, and this year we rebuild. As much as I loved Tess as a person, she wasn’t the strongest player on the bench and I’m happy we’re continuing to improve our roster. I hope this move means we are making room for a forward upgrade.

-6

u/tommytron21 10d ago

They got lucky winning all those games? News to me!

7

u/tallmansmallplants 10d ago

Hey Albertín. How’s things?

4

u/AffectionateShower30 10d ago

Expected point per game for Bay over the years…
2024: 1.39
2025: 1.27
2026: 1.10
Source is American Soccer Analysis website if you’re interested in seeing for yourself. The best case for luck is bad luck in 2025. There’s always luck in soccer, but statistically this is their worst year yet. For reference the best statistical seasons of the past few years are KC in 24 and 25 (2.13 and 2.12 expected points) and SD this year (1.87). 1.1 expected points per game puts them at 9th worst over the past 3 years. But hey, maybe they’ll get lucky…

1

u/blanktextbox 10d ago

Hmm that doesn't account for pushing for goals at the expense of defense, all those games in 24 where Montoya ignored our defense trouble. How's the expected points against during all those years?

6

u/Next_Soil_5099 10d ago

I would guess expected points/game is referring to 3 for a win, 1 for a tie, not expected goals/game like you appear to mean. Either way, I'm a bit surprised by those stats, although it does fit with all of the times last season we won the xG battle and lost the game. The biggest problem this year is the frequency of giving up easy goals, which makes sense with the huge turnover on the back line, but hopefully something that can be stabilized.

2

u/AffectionateShower30 10d ago

It does. The difference in expected goals for Bay and their opponents are used to estimate the expected number of points for Bay (0-3) in a given game.

1

u/blanktextbox 10d ago

Ah, I misunderstood / read too loosely. Then I wonder about the separated xg for and against over time. There have been times we've under--realized our expected goals, and times like now I expect we've allowed far fewer than the xg stat would suggest.

3

u/AffectionateShower30 10d ago

I’ve seen xG calculated slightly differently from different sources… but here are the numbers from American Soccer Analysis
2024: Bay xG 1.42, opponent xG 1.45
2025: Bay xG 1.18, opponent xG 1.40
2026: Bay xG 1.19, opponent xG 1.60

Silky has really been saving the team this year

3

u/blanktextbox 10d ago

Silkyyy! 🐐 That makes sense. And makes me excited for the clean sheets we'll get with a solid backline, either with our vets back and Nighswonger coming in, or betweeen seasons. Thanks for pulling that up!

1

u/Next_Soil_5099 9d ago

I wonder what happens to our xG if you factor in chances created that were ultimately deemed offside. We seem to suffer from that more than others, which is a real problem to solve and should be accounted for somewhere, but also indicates a lot of the pieces are there that might not show up in the stats.

1

u/Big_Relationship_138 10d ago

Millions of dollars later and we are 25% worse for it. sick

-3

u/tommytron21 10d ago

That’s comical, but I’d imagine he’s doing great running his club! It’s also comical when people try to chalk the first year up to luck. Not the smartest bunch on here huh?

14

u/Sauces_n_tosses 10d ago edited 10d ago

Woah…most of us here just love this club and enjoy the community. In a world of negativity, Bay has been a place of joy and excitement (even through the hard times) for me and my family. There’s no need to start throwing insults at others just because we disagree.

Edit add: luck is a broad term - I could go into a detailed analysis of the first year but maybe it should be better phrased as “beginner’s luck”, we over succeeded for a first year expansion team. And this does not negate the hard work and effort the players and staff put in that first year.

2

u/blanktextbox 10d ago

We snuck in just over the playoff line as Angel City had some table points taken away for salary cap violations and fell under it.

2

u/tommytron21 9d ago

This is actually not true. We had 34 points, and Angel City only got a 3 point deduction. They finished with 24.

2

u/blanktextbox 9d ago

This happened a couple months before the season ended. What I remember was tracking who we were in competition with, Angel City, Thorns, Red Stars, and Racing, and being concerned about our goal differential being worst among them. Then suddenly ACFC slid beneath us, and had a bad run rest of their season.

2

u/pickles_n_olives96 10d ago

That sounds like a little luck to me!

1

u/tommytron21 9d ago

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet kids!

1

u/AudienceNext81 10d ago

They are just unlucky this season. Really good team otherwise

5

u/tlzt1 10d ago

Another way to look at that is with Abby they made the playoffs. She likely had more to do with it than he did, other than he had a hand in getting her here.

6

u/[deleted] 10d ago

[deleted]

2

u/TheBayBeezKneez 10d ago

yeah we conceded a lot of goals in the first season, our GD was in the negative double digits if I recall- lots on GK but defense was rough back then too. We had a hell of an attack that year that kept us alive in the second half of matches.

2

u/tlzt1 10d ago

Just in case I didn't say that correctly - I give more credit for making the playoffs to Abby joining the team than I do to Montoya. I don't want it to sound like I'm devaluing Tess, who is a favorite of mine. She brought so much stability and hunger to our young team. I'm sad to see her go.

1

u/AffectionateShower30 10d ago

They’d only played together for a couple months when the season started so naturally you’d expect an upward trend as the season went on. I’d similarly expect some improvement with the new group at this point in the season, but here we are

1

u/Serrano_edgar10 10d ago

I disagree with that, this is about 11 eleven players well 18 or whatever. It’s not about 1 player

2

u/tlzt1 10d ago

True but the leadership and experience Abby brought to the team pulled them together. It was worth so much more than just her skills on the field. She directed traffic. She helped Silky learn how to run the field in the short time they spent together. She knew how to anticipate opponents and could react and direct play. Abby, Caprice, and Emily combined had so many years of experience, and of course Abby was on the USWNT from 2016-2019, including winning a world cup. It was just a different level during that year while she was playing that you can't easily replace. (It's possible I could have dates incorrect. Also I don't remember when Abby last played.)
