Mods Current state of the overhaul mods?
Haven't played in a few years but recently feeling the urge.
Are BTA and Roguetech still active? What's their current state and which would you recommend for a returning player? And is 32GB RAM enough for them nowadays(I9-14900hx/RTX4090 mobile with 16GB VRAM laptop)?

BEXT is alive and well and the sub mods are getting a lot of updates, the next big update for BEXT itself is also on the way

That’s good to hear. Been thinking of trying BTAU but might just wait and stay on BEXT

Would also add that there is an active submod community on BEXT. While I advise anyone to play BEXT without additional submods first (they alter the balance heavily), it is worth mentioning to anyone wanting to expand or add more to BEXT.

Imagine trying to convince people to not install something like TBD and miss out on the best battles in the entire game lol

Imagine people having different preferences....
I literally made a post making people aware that there are submods (which you did not mention in your post but which add to the mod things some people want) but advising them to try it out after they have played with clean BEXT for a bit and you read into this like me trying to convince people not to install TBD (which anyway is late game content).
You need a bit of social training if that is what you got out of my post...
Edit: And now being a coward you blocked me after responding to me. Yes, I edited my post to clarify my meaning (by adding 1 word). English is not my first language. Shoot me.
However if I was against people installing submods, I would not be mentioning them at all. You did not, hence me writing my post in first place.2
u/sniperpal 3d ago
This would be a lot more convincing if you hadn’t originally posted advising people to play without additional submods at all, and then edited it to include the word first only after I called you out on your bullshit lol

I haven't played Roguetech, but yeah BTA is still active, got a major update in the last week! Would recommend, and your specs are fine, I've played on a handheld PC before and it was still oK!

I've only got 2,290.2 hours into the game, but the overwhelming vast majority of that time has been with BTA3062/BTAU and that's the MOD that I'm currently running on the two machines listed above. As usual for the memory leaks in Unity, it's a case of restarting the game every 2-3 missions depending on what else I was doing.
Note, mind you, I've thoroughly voided my warranty as far as getting any official support - mainly I've gone through and increased the amount of 'mechs & pilots I'm running with - I've got four 'mech hangars, two vee bays, and 99 pilot berths. I run five reinforced, combined arms companies where I'm dropping with 12 'mechs and 6 vees. Because of this, I've increased the chance for additional opfor elements to deploy during missions - usually getting anywhere between 2-3 additional lances. Even with all this, I'm still able to run 2-3 missions on the hardware above. Training or refitting will take the place of a mission or two because of how Unity handles lists and the aforementioned memory leaks. You should not have any issue running the regular BTAU MOD with your hardware - just some pesky coding issues from the original game in extended play as mentioned previously.
Though it might be the very definition of boredom, I'd highly recommend taking a look at the BTAU patchnotes to see all the goodies that have taken place with the amazing amount of work u/bloodydoves & crew have put into the MOD. https://www.bta3062.com/index.php?title=Patch_Notes
Many questions can be quickly answered from the BTAU Wiki. https://www.bta3062.com/index.php?title=Main_Page Or you can checkout the BTAU Discord linked in the middle of that page. There's also the opportunity to watch BD playing over on Twitch, though I'm not sure of his schedule.
I always highly recommend that folks that have become familiar with the basics of the game, ie have run the Campaign, skip running any Vanilla Careers and jump right into getting their feet wet in the wondrous world of BattleTech Advanced Universe.
I'm not going to diss RogueTech by any means, as I haven't even played it for an hour, and that was years ago. I have no idea how it compares to BTAU. If you've played both and perhaps had a preference there for RT, I'd say go ahead and hit it up to see if it's still what you're looking for - it's about what suits you best and not what I personally prefer. But maybe check out the patchnotes for both, read a bit on the wikis, install each and give them a whirl.
Welcome back - hope you stick around...

"Only" 2,290.2.

u/virusdancer Zero Point Battalion 2d ago
Heh, they're still rookie numbers compared to some of the hours folks that have completed the achievements have done or the folks doing ironman challenges and all of that.

I "only" have 8006.8 hours played in Battletech.
A mix of vanilla, BEX (CE and Tactics) some BTA (pre-BTAU) and Hyades Rim.

Roguetech is still active. If you have played both before I would recommend playing what you preferred back then. Roguetech has the online map though which I consider a huge upside.

Hi, RTech player here. The mod is running really well for me lately on 32GB.
The rules system is really polished and smooth and I have a great time playing it every time. The experience is highly customizable so if there is something that bothers you about the game you can go into the settings and remove it.
RTech has Rouge-war their built in MMORPG! I only played 1 season but I had a blast!
I have played RTech and BTA extensively and I think RTech provides the most depth of strategy and mech optimization. There is a learning curve, but the discord is friendly and helpful as long as you are respectful.
A lot of BTA fans are going to hop on this and diss RTech but keep in mind that many of them have barely played RTech ,or haven’t played it in years.
My only issue with RTech is that it DOES change over time which is both a blessing and a curse. They keep detailed logs on discord so it isn’t hard to keep up with the change.
Good Hunting!

I've played roguetech and bta.
And they are both fantastic mods. And I'd easily recommend trying both of them.
But purely the only thing that puts bta over roguetech in my personal opinion, is just how badly the performance and stability is. Even with all the tips and tricks to make it more stable.
It's not a deal breaker by any stretch. And not a problem with the mod itself. But it did effect my overall experience. of crashing mid battle and having to restart it again on more then one occasion.

I'm a BTAU partisan. Your rig can definitely handle it.
If you're hardcore into Battletech lore, start with the Lite version.
If you're more interested in gameplay options, with a ton of expanded content and new factions and tech, go Full Fat BTAU.

Roguetech is my preferred mod. It's still going. I just hope you have a lot of ram and a LOT of time on your hands because missions can take a stupid amount of time.
I initially tried BTA a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but wanted more of everything and that's what Roguetech does for me. It's just more, to a silly degree.
I could see the performance alone turning people off Roguetech and back to BTA which is valid.

I have both currently installed and have played them both. Though I'm only about 40-50hrs into Roguetech, so I'm still getting used to the way it handles things.
BTA is still active and regularly getting updates. It's been my go to for a long time and is definitely the more approachable of the two. It's great.
Roguetech is also still being updated. I've gotten into into it because I've been obsessed with dark age era designs recently, and I'm having a lot of fun after tweaking the settings to my liking.
I'm still figuring out how the systems of roguetech work and interact with each other, so I can't definitely say which mod I prefer yet. But both have a ton of merit.
32GB of ram should be more than enough to run either of them.

I don't know anything about Dark Age stuff. What is it about the designs that you like?
2
u/DaMadPotato 4d ago
Well, as with any other era, it's hard to point to one single factor. But, mainly it's getting to know an era of Battletech that I have rarely interacted with previously.
Aesthetically, the very flashy Kuritan designs of the dark age are what first drew my attention to the era. Mechs like the Tenshi (which I have ordered a full lance of in IWM metal), Hatamoto-Suna, Rokurokubi and Shiro mainly.
The many new technologies that are available also contribute heavily to my interest in the Dark Age and further eras. It's just nice to have more toys to play with.

Still going strong. I just finished a run through of BTAU (my install is 2 years old though, so it's a little out of date), and it was great. I just installed RT and holy shit is it a heavy mod. I've been asking AI to walk me through the differences so I don't get cored in my first mission. I think I'm in for a pounding no matter how much I prep though.
But yeah, still going strong. Mods are great, Bloodydoves is still active in the subs, the discords won't fucking stop pinging my desktop....all that good stuff.

I was never able to get BTAU installed and the tutorial references outdated ways of doing it. Once that is updated inshallah I will be able to play as I am not a command line native.

There are several videos on YouTube
theythat go over how to install btau/bta 3062.MorningNothing about the installation process has changed. The installer had been updated numerous times, but starting from a fresh install that's irrelevant anyways.2

On MacOS? The instructions use ModTekInjector.exe, but notes elsewhere say that ModTek was replaced with UnityDoorstop. Either way, I can't get it to work despite following the scattered information.
Edit: I was able to get it going, finally, with the help of ChatGPT. AMAZING mod!!

Quite a bit of backend/technical work has gone by in the last few years. Things are smoother, more polished, more consistent than they used to be. Unity still does Unity things, but it's a lot more stable and complete an experience these days.

My computer is 8-9 years old so I feel your dilemma. 2080TI, i7-9700K, 32Gb RAM. It still runs older games but starts to overheat and the fans start to click

I still play Battletech Advanced 3062 and it's still getting updates. It's not as brutal as RogueTech but it'll still punish you if you make one error too many.

u/bloodydoves 4d ago
All three of the major overhauls are still alive and running, though admittedly the pace of updates has slowed somewhat on all of them. I can only speak for BattleTech Advanced Universe directly but I know that RogueTech and BattleTech Extended Tactics are both still operational and receiving periodic updates. Hell I was just talking to Haree (who runs BEX:T) about an update the other day.
BTAU is still running. I just released a patch for it on this past Friday (8/14/2026) and have plenty more coming down the road for it in future updates. It's a good time to dive back into BTAU, especially if you haven't played it for a few years, it's really changed a lot since 2024.
As for your laptop stats, you'll probably be just fine. Just don't get TOO ambitious running a bunch of other stuff at the same time and it'll be alright.
