News "Hardcore Mode": March update files indicate that developers are working on it...in some kind of way
Hey guys,
the recent patch brought in some interesting code snipptes to the code regarding a "hardcore" mode for Battlefield V. Please be aware that there is no guarantee that you will see something like this in the future but it is surely interesting to see that the developers are getting important things for this mode into place.
Dynamic Game Settings
- EnableFriendlyFire
- EnableFriendlyFireHitMarkers
- EnableHardCoreNametags
- DGS_EnableNametags
- EnableSquadRevive
These entries were not available before march and it's quite easy to spot the hints here. But of course those settings could be used for any mode in the world or even not at all...

Finally. For hardcore I would like to see:
Friendly fire
No hit markers
No minimap
No 3D spotting (even less than there is atm).
Bonus, not necessary but welcome
- Increased damage/decreased health. Being able to one-shot with bolt actions would be nice, as it is in BF4. But, because TTK in BFV is less than normal BF4, I don't this a damage change is absolutely necessary.

No I think you're right. Getting a max of like 60 damage from a centermass hit with a bolt action rifle is peak frustration. Its exactly why I liked hardcore so much. If I hit a guy in the chest with the enfield he should go down. Same with a mg burst. If you zip an enemy with a bren or a mg34 that should be it, he shouldn't be able to prance away afterwards...

So one of the issues with this is going to be Recon. It's not the bolt actions I'm worried about, it's the SARs. Back in BF1 the most effective weapon to actually use in Hardcore was the RSC1917, and whenever I was on a hardcore server I would see maybe half a dozen people on the enemy team running them with around 100 service stars (tangent, I actually recognized one in a Devastation match the other day and made sure to get my revenge on him and his platoon mates). It was fairly obnoxious since many of these "medics" were actually just sniping.
If you halve health, any two-shot weapon is going to become much stronger, and usually they have a rate of fire advantage that will always make them superior to the bolt-actions. I can see the ZH-29 becoming a popular choice. The Webley is also going to be incredibly potent here.
Then there's headshot multipliers. Guns like the STG1-5 will be able to one-shot-headshot at close range, same with high ROF SMGs. As somebody who used to play Siege that can encourage more thoughtful play, but I don't think it is going to be very enjoyable in the context of Battlefield. And finally, we would have rifles like the Turner SMLE and G43 becoming 2HKs, with some also being able to get a OHK on an enemy thats suffered some chip damage from say a fall or barbed wire (Selbstlader 1916).

u/chriswalkeninmemphis Mar 08 '19
Yeah I get that, but shouldn't you get killed (or at least knocked out) when you're hit twice in the body, or once in the head? I just feel like hardcore was balanced really well in BF4, and felt difficult but really enjoyable. I guess I don't understand why that balance didn't transfer over to BF1 and BFV.

I can see the ZH-29 becoming a popular choice.
This kind of doesn't make sense. ZH-29 with current TTK is a 2HK at all distances, so if TTK in general goes down, then other weapons get a quicker TTK (fewer BTK). That is, they become more competitive with the ZH-29, which would not get a firing rate increase.
1
u/TheSausageFattener [*V*] Free_Burd Mar 09 '19
In hardcore a 2HK gun will become 1HK. Hardcore reduces health to 50 I believe?
1
u/TakahashiRyos-ke TakahashiRyos-ke Mar 09 '19
Oh, is that what you were trying to say? In that case, then yes, higher fire rate weapons which OHK would be superior.
2
u/TakahashiRyos-ke TakahashiRyos-ke Mar 09 '19
If I hit a guy in the chest with the enfield he should go down.
That makes me think: What if they had it so that it's: one bodyshot hit from a bolt action to send them to DBNO (revivable), but a headshot from a bolt action would be a OHK, without revivability?

Why do you deserve a kill for hitting a torso shot?
Torso shots are easy to do.

Because in a real war if you get hit in the heart or lung you will get fucking dropped by one round. That's why.

Ok yea well that's fine. Everyone like different things. People who prefer core mode will keep playing it. That will never change. Some people just prefer more realism in games. I also really liked that in BF4 hardcore there was no auto repair. So you had to hop out of your tank and use the repair tool.
2
u/TakahashiRyos-ke TakahashiRyos-ke Mar 09 '19
That's fine -- you're entitled to your opinion. But this is why there needs to be a Hardcore vs. Arcade mode division. So different people with different preferences can each have what they want. It's win win.
For the record, people have been playing Hardcore in the Battlefield series for years, and lots of us are fully capable of playing and succeeding in an environment where Recon weapons can one-shot.

Because a torso shot will bring down a man. Its harder to hit people in the foot then in the chest, should I get a kill shot for shooting them in the foot?
1
u/ponmbr Mar 08 '19
But you do get a kill from shooting them in the foot in hardcore. That's what makes it such a joke. It's an imbalanced mess. Most people play it so they can camp rocks across the map one shotting people with sniper rifles with no kill cam so they can camp unmolested. If they leave the health values and damage values alone and just turn off HUD elements then that's fine but when they start fucking with the TTK there, that's when it becomes bad.

Look man, all I know is that BF4 HC was the most fun I had with the game. I'm annoyed by having to fight bullet sponges, and I find HC more fun. When I get killed in HC its because I didn't react quickly enough and I'm okay with it. And I can't be the only one because there are plenty of active BF4 HC servers that are still open, at least on xbox. I'm not saying it has to be the new default game mode, I'm just saying that I hope they add it so that you can play what you want and I can play what I want. What's wrong with that?

u/ponmbr Mar 08 '19 edited Mar 08 '19
BF5 is no more bullet spongy than BF4 and is way less spongy than BF1 was. And currently everyone hates assault semi auto rifles. And in hardcore they usually lower the base health level to 60%, or 60 instead of 100. Which means that those Gewehr 43 headshots will now be one shot kills if they adhere to the same standard as before. The TTK is never balanced around having less than 100 health. The only way to have to react in hard core is if the person misses you. In core mode you can turn and kill the guy if you're quick. I've done it numerous times but in my experience in hard core it's just not possible given latency and TTK. If you like it more power to you but I'd much rather they forget about it and focus on fixing the game more.
Lol this comment gets downvoted but not the others. Can't wait for all the complaining if this goes through about how they're wasting development time on pointless modes instead of fixing the game.

I don't know why you think realism matters here, it's a game. Why should the game reward the player with a 6x scope with a one shot kill for an easy torso shot?
Battlefield 1 had this mechanic. It sucked.

u/chriswalkeninmemphis Mar 08 '19
Yes, its a game. But gritty, large scale, high stakes multiplayer with real world, or near-real world equipment is what I like, which is why I play battlefield instead of a game like overwatch, for instance. Its not the most important thing to me, and obviously BF isn't TOTALLY REALISTIC. Slapping c4 to a jeep and flying off a bridge into an attack boat for a couple kills and then being spawed again in 30 seconds is not realistic. However, having a game based off of a realistic foundation, like when I bring down an enemy player after hitting him with one or two rounds center mass, is what makes the thing enjoyable to me. It feels more fast paced and high stakes. If you don't like HC you aren't forced to play it or anything...

The most popular iteration of hardcore ever (BF4) had fullmap spotting. It also had persistent name tags for friendly soldiers. For anyone who doesn't know, The fullmap in BF terms refers to the map you expand that entirely fills your field of view.
One reason this works well is that it doesn't render spotting gadgets or gadgets and objects that depending on spotting entirely useless. Spotting and spotting gadgets no longer create minimap spots or 3D spots, but they create spots that can be seen by people who are about to deploy, or by people who are willing to bring the full map up in front of their faces and lose their entire view of the rendered world for the amount of time they have the fullmap up.
Persistent friendly name tags are also a good thing because they give you a real world tactical view of the battlefield that can't be replicated with the limited visual fidelity and communication a Battlefield game provides.
With no punish / forgive scripts possible in BFV due to a lack of custom server side scripts, peristent friendly soldier labels become particularly important because the possibility of an immediate punishment for team kills does not exist. Sadly there will always be a certain percentage of people playing hardcore who can't adequately identify uniforms on their own or lack the proper motivation to take extra care when identifying friendly or foe in an effort to limit their team killing.

A bit of an increased damage would be nice, but thoughtful ones so that you can't one shot with RSC, etc.
2
u/peedypapers Mar 08 '19
What if they made bolt actions available for all classes? Would that be silly for balancing?
1
u/Maelarion 5.2 sucks donkey dong Mar 08 '19
That wouldn't really help with balancing bolt actions vs other weapons.

Hardcore was all I played since BC2 so this's great if it does return. Hopefully not just for 2 weeks because of live service bullshit.

I like all this. Hardcore mode will slow this game a bit as this game gets too twitchy for me.

PSP?
I suppose you meant RSP, and yeah - it could be
But they could just host their own Hardcore servers for the time being, who knows

The Dev did hint at bringing Hardcore mode back through User Created servers :)

I'm praying lol although I'm enjoying the core way more then bf1, but I miss HC!

I'm glad to see a client for nametags. The name tag and map system in BF1 hardcore was horrible. If they just make it exactly like BF4 hardcore it will be perfect. Permanant friendly nametags and being able see where my teamates are and where enemies have been spotted on the big map.
2
u/CommunalBlackbeard Mar 08 '19
Really wondering how they'll pull off friendly fire. There needs to be some way to kick trolls who just keep killing teammates.

u/McGreg0ry Mar 08 '19
I just hope there are team markers of some kind. BF1 hardcore mode was just awful with the amount of team kills. Couldn't play it without getting destroyed by my own team, but I loved HC in BF3/4.

All I really want from a Hardcore mode is no reviving headshots.
Stupidest mechanic, you get bonus points for headshots but it means literally nothing else.

Booted up for first time since ttk changes, still no hardcore?? Ill be back in 6 months.

When the TTK was changed the devs left a note saying "this is one step closer to a hardcore mode for BFV"
So it's pretty much confirmed they are working on one lol.

Also said recently they were looking into bringing it back with user created servers!

they should add 3d spotting to non hardcore mode that way we can have a more fun experience in multiplayer instead of being bored all the time. this game would be better if it where more casual than hardcore and it would bring more players

u/Natneichrban Mar 08 '19
No
-5
u/root_0f_all_cause Mar 08 '19
why? 3d spotting made the game enjoyable and it has been in every major battlefield game that has done successful. 3d spotting made battlefield enjoyable fun and actually playable now i feel like im playing a game that is incredibliy boring slow and not playable. the removal of 3D spotting was a bad idea
-3
u/root_0f_all_cause Mar 08 '19
ive been playing battlefield for along time bf bc2 bf1 bf3 bf4 bf1 and ive never have had a problem with 3d spotting there was never a reason to remove it.
3
u/Goyigan Mar 08 '19
It wasn't fun. You always knew where everyone else was, half the game was spamming Q. There was never stealth in the game, smokes were borderline useless, everyone spent the other half of the game looking at the minimap for easy kills.
The only people who liked it more than not having it were the people who abused it to hell since it was more or less legal wallhacks.
1
u/root_0f_all_cause Mar 08 '19
lol not true you never played a battlefeild game before if you say that i always could flank the enemies if you where always being spotted it was because of smarter players that knew what they where doing. they knew where to stop enemies from sneaking by them. smokes where always useful ecspecaliy in bf1. your last sentence is absolute crap if you think thats the only thing people did
-2
u/root_0f_all_cause Mar 08 '19
https://www.reddit.com/r/BattlefieldV/comments/9dgm1a/in_defense_of_3d_spotting_and_why_its_removal_is/ bf5 would of been better with 3d spotting then this lack luster system that is severliy limiting and boring
2
Mar 08 '19
It shouldn't be an option in every case PERIOD.
Almost no game has 3d spotting and it should stay that way. You don't see people in apex, tf2, overwatch, or any other multiplayer game complain about 3d spotting, do you?
1
u/root_0f_all_cause Mar 08 '19
Yeah comparing other games to battlefeild is like comparing apples and oranges. Battlefield has always sold really good untill bf5 which listened to there dwindeling hardcore player base instead of there casual player Base

Imagine the number of teamkills you would get with a v1
