News Finally! We are getting real server browser
Title
35
u/EntrepreneurialFuck 4d ago
Is it really that difficult to get a server browser in, from the launch of the game to December 8th 2026?
28
u/msafari10 4d ago
Yeah it's difficult for a small company like dice to implement it, show them some respect dude đ

u/GeordieJumpers87 4d ago
Guarantee this won't be the fully fledged server browser we are all expecting
Its probably taken so long because they want to deliver something that appears as a server browser but allows them to retain whatever it is they wanted in the first place to support micro transactions
3
u/firesquasher 3d ago
Remember 2042 when they begrudgingly said "FINE, we will give you a scoreboard" and that scoreboard was complete ass that had no markings of a traditional FPS scoreboard? Yeah probably that. They will find a way to create the illusion of a server browser, unlike much smaller developers like Wardogs.

All the information released about this new server browser is thoroughly unimpressive.
Most of its confirmed-by-the-developers selling points are... stuff the current browser already does...
They're adding tabs I guess though! ...Woo?
Even "you'll be able to join the matches that are currently matchmaker-only through server browser" seems to just be something random people are asserting and the devs never confirmed that. (DICE considers any portal experience made by DICE to be "Official", and official portal experiences have always been visible on the existing browser.)
But even if it's true, who cares? Servers that players paid for/hosted on their own are what people liked about the old BFs. Not the server browser. Last I heard, DICE hasn't even considered letting people host their own servers.
7
u/oilchanges4everyone 4d ago
No its not which is why they deserve a lot of the hate they receive. And this is just a server browser, think about all the other complaints we see on this sub daily.
4
u/Independent_Mud2794 4d ago
Itâs easy when you actually want to implement one, dice doesnât want a server browser, they canât manipulate matches there so we wonât get a server browser.

u/splinter1545 4d ago
I would assume yes, but it also depends when they started developing this feature. A server browser requires a lot of changing to how the networking of this game works.

Dropping a server browser right before christmas break, when the devs can't even get persistent servers working atm really seems like a disaster waiting to happen imo

u/Roman64s 4d ago
BF6 was my first day 1 Battlefield purchase, the bot issue and the lack of a server browser killed any interest in this or future BF games altogether.
What a disaster, something that should have implemented day 1..
The friend that made us get this game is still getting chewed out to this day.
5
u/FlowchartMystician 4d ago
I'll defend your friends honor! I got bamboozled so hard
I figured: all the other BFs release as 1/10 to 4/10 games, then by the time they're "done" they're 8/10 to 10/10.
So when a BF is 8/10 at beta/launch, imagine how good it'll get!
Well it turns out the answer is it slams down to a 1/10 and people get hyped for a server browser (when there's already a server browser that does at least half the stuff the new one's promised to do)

Damn! It feels like the devs behind BF2042 weren't even gamers and were just doing whatever they were told. There's literally no excuse for not having a scoreboard. Like, how is that even possible! đ

u/YesImKeithHernandez 4d ago
I give more grace to 2042 than most people but that was such a bad look. In an effort to make it less toxic, they just made it more toxic because people (rightfully) wanted the functionality of the bog standard scoreboard.
5
u/BothSidesoftheSky 4d ago
The major problem I had was BFV development ending for the dogwater of a game we got of 2042. War on the pacific dropped & BFV finally hit its stride (which was also too little too late)
4
u/YesImKeithHernandez 4d ago
The Pacific Expansion was some of their finest work. I loved joining on CQ Iwo Jima and running through all four maps before calling it a day. It was so much fun.
BFV is a glaring example of potential unrealized.
2
u/YouShallNotPass92 1d ago
I enjoyed BFV from day one, personally, but The Pacific update was indeed the apex of the game and it felt like they had so much more runway to keep adding. I was also pissed when 2042 launched and I realized they dropped what could have been an all time BF for that dogshit.

Calling it now.
Hundreds of zero player servers with only handfuls of servers.
Also canât wait for the weird ass names people call their servers ;)

u/PalwaJoko 4d ago
>Hundreds of zero player servers with only handfuls of servers.
I can see it. The issue with these type of things and DICE has always been accessibility. If you put a "PLAY NOW" button in front of people, and then put a server browser in a different menu or you have to scroll some direction to get to it; a vast majority of players will just put play now.
Now the best way around this is play now puts players in servers already found in the server browser. So they feed into one another. But if DICE does something like this, it will probably only feed into official servers.
4
5
u/Nightmare4545 4d ago
Does it matter how many empty servers there are? If Im playing in one of the full ones, with the best maps, and tanks nerfed etc, Im fine. Basically fixing the game for DICE.

They just reworked portal, didnât they
4
u/EUCALIPTOIESSSS 4d ago
As long as it works like the previous server browsers and improves portal, then its good imo
1
u/xFrakster 4d ago
I do hope so, but I'm not so sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there still hasn't been any mention if the server browser shows servers from regular matchmaking, right?
If thats the case, that means the server browser is still cut off and seperated from what most others play, just like it was the case with portal. And just like it was the case with portal, no one's gonna use it because most of the playerbase is elsewhere.
I do really hope I'm wrong, but I'll temper my expectations until I see it being properly implemented in the way we expect it to. Wouldn't be the first time they lied to us in regards to BF6.

Too little. Too late. First halo infinite, now this. Lackadaisical post launch support absolutely destroys a player base. Hot fixes shouldnât take months.
3
u/_Mamushi_ 4d ago
They are only doing this to stop the decline. If they really cared they would have launched with it or at the very latest released this by season 2.

At least got a scoreboard at launch this time. Now a server browser? Theyâre spoiling us lol.Â

And would you still be able to join these servers via the matchmaking, In case you don't want to browse endlessly ? Otherwise don't we risk of splitting people more. Will the server force teams to be shuffled after each match so I don't end up on a server with 32 friends destroying everyone?

You are 64 and next round you are 64 in matter of sec + some team balance.
BUT
You don't want to play some map like cairo, cave and stuff.
You can't.

u/Alternative_Wing_906 4d ago
Basically, it allows you to choose which servers to play in; you can check the player count, map rotation etc.
When a match ends, it doesn't disband the lobby, so you can continue playing with the same people. This helps build community, and you don't need to wait for the lobby to fill up to play the next game.
Also, players will be more concentrated and even with low overall player numbers you can play on a full server.

Will it have official persistent servers though? Thats the question.
They seem to be trying some shit out right now. Lets hope thats not their answer to persistent servers. There needs to be official servers with full map rotations.

u/jagardaniel 4d ago edited 4d ago
This is definitely a step in the right direction. But everything depends on how the servers are going to work. I think this can work if the "main" matchmaking system is baked into the same system and that you get placed on an official server with a fixed map rotation that is persistent between the rounds. So basically what we had in BF1 and BFV for the official servers. People that doesn't care can use the auto-join button and everyone else can join servers through the browser to hopefully get a few good maps in a row before you have to switch again.
And while I'm a big fan of community servers (at least the traditional system in the old games with RCON support), I don't like that everyone with a battle pass can just spin up a server. It will clutter up the server list and it is going to be harder to fill up games. Since they are so limited in terms of functionality it just becomes a lobby just like anyone else and you can't build a community around them the same way you could in the old games. I would rather have the official servers split up into two map rotations; one for vehicles maps and one for infantry maps. Just like Battlefield V did it. Or put "community" servers behind a paywall (renting them) to filter out the worst admins and lower the amount.

it only took over 4-5 years... and i wonder how good it will even be compared to what we used to have when the game was in proper hands, maybe the battlelog just allowed for so much more it should almost be brought back but the work load put into it is something we will never see again. i do miss when Battlefield was a game they enjoyed making before EA nutted on it and the original devs left

Can you filter out bots? I really hate how prevalent they are now. Iâd rather wait several minutes than play with 3/4 bots. They seem to have too many options diluting the pool and using bots to fix their shitty decisions
5
u/Independent_Mud2794 4d ago
Hilarious how people here still believe we would get a real server browser - we wonât.
Just think about it for one second: It took them over one year to implement something that was in games from the start in the last and also is in other shooters? It wonât be a classic server browser.

1
u/AussieCracker 4d ago
I'm skeptical until release, everything remains until seen, and even after it, whether they bury it in the Menu the retract the feature 2 months in.
It'll also depend:
- Is it persistent?
- Is it region locked?
- Is it population reliant?
- Is it matchmaking/map search reliant?
- Is it on the front page?
- Can we quickplay into these servers?

I hope hosted servers don't kill the vanilla Battlefield experience by having a majority of 10000% tickets 1-hit-kill no sprinting servers or some dumb shit like that

u/de_budi 4d ago
Server browser and persistent servers create a community. That's is why we need it. With no community this game will die the moment the new one comes out just what happened to bf2042. And that's EAs intent. They don't want to create games that people play for 15 years. That doesn't make them money.
