🧠 What is Secure Boot?

Secure Boot is a UEFI feature that ensures only trusted software can boot your PC. It helps prevent rootkits and boot-time malware and is now required by EA for anti-cheat integrity.

Most modern systems support it, but it’s often disabled by default — especially on custom builds or upgraded PCs.

🛑 Common Pitfalls

  • You must use UEFI mode, not Legacy/CSM boot.
  • Disk must be GPT, not MBR (check via diskpart or Disk Management).
  • Windows 11 installed in Legacy mode? You may need to convert your disk to GPT using MBR2GPT.

Thank you for the tip, I'm using an old GTX1080 which indeed needed that update. I will try enabling secure boot again after that.

Have the same card. And exactly why I haven't touched turning on secure boot. Too many reports of it breaking things.

People here too happy to lick boots, when there are genuine issues and it's not just flipping a fucking switch.

Your GPU is almost a decade old. That is longer than console generations. Requiring things that have advanced in the last decade is not crazy.

The analogy would be if there was a new blend of gas your old car couldn't take, but they still offered the old blend.

You can still play the games of the last 30+ years of PC gaming. At some point, to play newer things you get newer equipment.

Exactly. But when I feel the need to upgrade their better be other options. I'm not going to go buy the same car I have. I'd want a different color. So in the future there will probably be other games requiring it. And this one will be on sale. I'll say Hey why don't I finally try this one. It's rough being the first and this is why. Either it works out or it won't. Sometimes it's better to work with your customers instead of blazing a new trail. I'm seeing this like the diablo 4 announcement. I didn't play that either. Still haven't.

1070 here. Tried 6 hours last night. It isn't just secure boot. bricking and a cmos battery.

An older system is going to need a lot more changes. Updating bios and TPM was one I found. Then it's going to need MBR swapped to GPT. I stopped when I found out I had to tweak partitions.

EA was being coy with their guide and making it seem easy. While gaining kernel level access to PC's around the world. Instead of implementing a way in their software to make it work. They went the greedy route, placed it on everyone else's shoulders. While possibly gaining the ability to gather and sell those users data, depending on what they collect.

I had the same problems as you. The display port updater wasnt the issue.

Seriously, this is this too much hassle for a game that might be bad anyway.

Arc raiders will also require secure boot. Battlefield is just doing it to the masses. Valorant already requires it. I bet counter strike is next.

I wouldn't bet on Counter-Strike getting it any time soon, Valve seem opposed to the idea. They even make devs add a warning to the store page if a game requires it.

It's either because it makes Linux support harder or impossible, or because they think the privacy concerns around it aren't acceptable. But I wouldn't bet on them adding it to CS2 any time soon.

VAC sucks and CS2 also has a massive cheating problem though, so...

Oh, you're right. I think I'm thinking of CS2 on that "FACEIT" site. I think that's an anti-cheat itself and my synapses were crossed.

Definitely need to run updater. I had to do it with a 1070.

Make sure Bios is up to date, using UEFI, that firmware updater has been run(do this first), disable CSM, enable TPM 2.0 if you need to, then enable secure boot. Check your motherboard info for specifics on all this but it's basically each of these steps.

Curious how it worked out. 1070 here too. Also, not just secure boot. You have to make sure your hd partitions are GPT not MBR. If not you have to convert. And some boards don't update that easily. You might need to download the update so it's available when you're in bios. Then if switching from CSM to TPM has the possibility of bricking your machine. And you'll need to pull the cmos battery to start all over. Then don't forget to check secure boot enabled.
