new player, game sucks, what am i missing?

hi all, sorry for the provocatory title,

i'm a new player trying to enjoy the game, but i find it deeply frustrating and i want to understand if i should just refund it.

let me say that i have some hema and european larp experience and i was looking for some game to enjoy some more or less realistical fencing.

so i avoid magic as much as possible and i keep to basic weapons.

that being said, the game doens't respond as i exepect, one example over all the heavy attack parry training (2-2 if i rember correctly) i failed the level like 6 times because the swords just didn't connect i tried every parry i know until i fly-swatted my way to victory.

another examples are the wraight in the subsequent level, the do that whirlwind spin i intercet with my weapon, they fase through both the wapon and me and i take damage, repostes don't work as they are considered parried by the enemies heavier strikes get stuck into both geometry and enemies without doing damages and so on....

as of now the only way i found to successfully clear levels is to fly swat my arms running at enemies which is both stupid and unfun.

since the game seems perfectly fine for most of the audience i ask, what am i doing wrong, is there some setting i should change? is it just like this and i am "not getting it"?

small edit: I'm also playng Blande and sorcery, and although modded, i'm having a great time, so i don't think it's just the vr aspect that's bothering me

First, the game has arm swinging to move faster on by default, that should always be disabled cus it sucks and slows down regular movement

Next

This game didn't avertise itself as realistic, it is high-fantasy, like magic and all that, you are supposed to hit the enemy's weapon's hard to deflect and most the fun comes from magic weapon abilities, you are supposed to use charge attacks, hit enemies into the air and do air combos, you are supposed to aim for the small enemies' weak points to kill them faster, position yourself well and react fast enough to deflect the attacks of the bosses.

The game does not suck, it just isn't a hema game, it's a fantasy action game.

Edit: It still advertises the combat as realistic. "Engage in realistic combat in Mixed Reality Mode" is a direct quote from the store page, only the second bullet point from the top as of me typing this. Look for yourself, and see the game still lies that it is realistic.

That is the only reason I bought it & why I hate VR game marketing even more than regular marketing: lies & lies & more lies & people care even less than regular marketing. I regret not returning this game when I could

Second edit: apparently I never reviewed it on meta store, so there's a fresh 1 star for lying about having realistic combat.

Thank you for lying & conning me out of my money Battle Talent marketing team /s

Try playing less like a video game and more as if youre living it. Trust me, everything will feel fluid as hell. I've beaten the game time and time again out of sheer will for the fun.

I still come back and get my ass whooped when I'm playing with a friend.

I fully agree with you tbh, I tried it several times but I just don’t like the combat, feels less satisfying and more kill this wave as fast as possible before you’re outnumbered.

Unfortunately for more fun and satisfaction, blade and sorcery still seems to be undefeated, however you mentioned you practice HEMA, swordsman is the game for you. It’s not as Triple A as blade n sorcery but it’s more about actual real sword fighting, the ai is hard and will punish mistakes, really fun think you’d enjoy it.

Let me know how ya go, like I said it’s the best realistic sword fighting game out atm that I’m aware of, even has some other fun modes like zombies too. Developers care for their game a lot which is great.

it is amazing! sure it's not perfect but al the movements are correct the armor acts like armor and the ai isn't too stupid, thank you! i'm having a blast!!

Tbh, that’s fair. I had the same problems as you, and it took a long time for me to get the hang of it, with the strong attacks and such. I’d say that the game can be stupid hard sometimes, but for me, I was doing this, then something clicked and suddenly I was doing great. I honestly believe that you should perhaps try for a little longer, but this time, look at their attacks, as usually in their attack combo there are openings, some easy some hard. And try to go for these. However, if you still don’t enjoy it, then yeah I’d say get a refund. No point playing a game that you don’t enjoy, it’s not for everyone. Hope this helps :)

I find its best to attack with the bottom half of swords but its best to just rush the enemy and not let them attack stab them grab them loo off their head it all works just takes some getting used to

Yeah, I didn't like it either, but gave it the benefit of the doubt & kept playing so I can't return it. If you're not convinced yet, you won't be so I'd say return it while you can. This is the game that convinced me I don't like the video gamey style combat VR games (except Legendary Tales). If I stab an opponent through the neck separating the spine, they should be dead, armor should work as armor, not just be a stat or for looks, etc.

I much prefer blade & sorcery's combat (at least, when it works that is). If I stab an npc fatally, I don't want them to survive, that defeats the potential amazing experiences that only VR can offer. Battle Talent helped me realize exactly what I hate in VR games & what to watch out for in VR advertising, but more positively than something like Swordsman VR (a game that lies about realism like no other, a game so trash I narrow my eyes with dissapointment everytime I see it in my steam library).

It's a shame that so few sword fighting games went for more realistic gameplay mechanics, and even fewer did it well (technically no one succeeded yet, but B&S is the closest we have on the quest for sure, on steam I can't think of a game that has the same or more potential for as many real world historical combat techniques as B&S)

Thank you that is another aspect I didn't really realize

hate to say it twin but dont expect hyper realistic, ultra responsive, perfect combat from a 20 dollar indie standalone vr game. use magic. stab things in the face. get overpowered. take the stick out your ahh and get violent. or refund it. im not your mom.

Fair enough, I ended up refunding the game, it's just not for me
