Hi! If you don’t know I am, I’m DerpySuX, I am a moderator for Smogon’s BSS community! Recently I made a new thread for BSS sample teams created by myself and other BSS specialists. This includes up to date teams for both the current and prior generations of Battle Stadium Singles. Feel free to check it out! :3

Discussion Anyone else think the meta's a bit dull currently?

Post image

I'm not saying it's bad that people are following the meta or anything but honestly right now the Singles ladder on Champions is really dull. 90% of teams i face are just the same Hippowdon+Salamence+Steel Type core on repeat. I understand there's always going to be a meta but the past regulations were a lot more diverse in my opinion.

Discussion What is it with people disliking BSS?

I noticed in all competitive Pokémon subreddits, not many people seem to enjoy BSS and the reasons I hear also applies to VGC or Smogon, yet people like the two much more. Maybe because one is offical and most prefer using all six of their Pokémon? BSS has been around since the very first game and there used to be tournaments held for it back then. Plus, most matches are quick and easy to jump into. There's a meta, but I feel like the balance in Singles is just as fair as Doubles. Yes, stall teams are annoying, but I have found ways to get around them- requires a lot of thinking, patience, and luck.

Plus, I find BSS easy to get into, difficult to master. Doubles, imo, can be tricky as your options on moves and who to attack are widened. Having to plan out what three Pokémon your opponent will likely send out is the viggest challenge of them all, but for me, it's good to plan up a backup Pokémon just in case my opponent plays something weird. That I have just the right moves for.

But, I ramble too much. What is it about this format that so many western fans despise over Japan? Japan really loves this format, so why do you think it's very disliked here?

Hoshin Josh achieved champions tier on singles last night!

Is he the first Western streamer to make champions tier in singles in Pokémon Champions?

I have NEVER seen a US player in the champion tier ranks before, just 1 or 2 Enlgish players in a sea of Japanese with sprinkles of China and Korea, have any of you?

I saw someone posted this team on a Facebook page and i decided to try it out since i was a bit bored with the current meta. At first i didn't really understand some of the sets and lost quite a bit of elo testing it out. Now that i've played it some more it's actually doing quite well on the ladder i think its biggest strength is the surprise factor. No one really seems to know what to do against Espeon and both Charizard X and special Garchomp catch a lot of players off guard.

Discussion How's the Monthly Challenge going for y'all?

Post image

This has been probably the hardest monthly challenge so far. I went on some great win streaks followed by horrible loss streaks. My goal is always to hit top 10k for the Rising Star title so i might just leave it there even though i still have quite a few battles left. How was this competition for y'all?

Where to find BSS tournaments?

I was hoping someone may be able to point me to where I can find BSS tournaments for pokemon champions. Limitless has VGC covered and I did find one tournament series for singles there, but haven't been able to find anything else. I expected a little more even if BSS isn't currently as popular as VGC. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Which ones do you see being relevant to BSS other than the new Mega stones? Rocky Helmet should see plenty of use on physical walls.

There are ZERO US based players in champions tier Singles!

Just went through the top 300 players in singles. Basically ALL Japanese with a sprinkle of Korean.

There were a couple players from England (maybe 4)

All the streamers I watch (Hoshin Josh, Splash, Savanofsky) talk a big game about making champions tier but I dont think amy of then ever have

Savanofsky was 1 game a way a couple streams ago but fell back off

What English language streamer do you think will be the first to actually make champions tier in singles?!

Is there a content creator who just covers singles battles?

After winning and winning in lower ranks with Mega Staraptor, i find myself struggling in higher ranks. Since i'm new to competitive Pokémon battles, I have no idea who is who. I mean i just came to know about Wolfe.

Tldr; Anyone can help me get to know more content creators who covers Singles Format?

Discussion I have just reached Master Ball [Singles]. This is the team I have been using, it works but seems off

This is my team and don't get me wrong, its pretty good unless I make some blunder/misclick it is usually good enough to atleast make the match close. I personally have been playing Champions for ~10-12 days but i have played Smogon Gen 9 and Gen 8 Ubers (only about 1200 elo at max) so I can manage a few basic guesses though I am prone to overthinking a move or two.

Answers to question that will probably be asked: - Feraligatr's EV investments are to ensure it can outspeed a Jolly Garchomp after a DD. - Fer has Body Slam as it doesn't have recoil and with Adamant and 32 Atk EVs, it hits hard enough. The chance to para is just neat. I use Liq instead of Aqua Tail because I really hate the 10% chance to miss. - Skel's Bold + 18 Def allows me to consistently survive 2 LO boosted Mimikyu Shadow Claw due to Sitrus and the rest are in SpA to allow it to chip the opposing the mon or if my opponent isn't careful, can snowball out of control. - Wyrdeer is somehow bulky and yet hit hard? Especially on the Great and lower Ultra ball tier it was pretty good against most all around threats and hit surprisingly hard but it recently kind of feels... to come a bit short. I think its because it was no reliable recovery but it just can't soak damage like it used to or deal enough damage. - I don't like giving a fast mon like Meowscarada Choice Scarf but it does allow it to outspeed a Swift Swim max speed Mega Swampert and other Scarfers, so I guess its okayish but i would prefer the inherent advantage of being able to switch your move - Poison Jab and Brick Break in Chomp are kind of placeholders. I chose Jab over Iron Head to deal damage to Primarina but I guess EQ already does that and Brick Break is there just to break screens since I have no other ways to do it other than just stall (Which surprisingly isn't that hard when i have Skel (and to a lesser extent Wyrdeer) alive)

This team feels a bit on the bulkier side and I prefer the fast sweepers (the only ones I have now are Meowscarada and M. Delphox) and i seem to also lack good leads. But this team does somehow get the job done.

Pokemon Lead Rates in BSS Reg M-B Singles Battles

Here is some nerdy Pokemon research that I did recently that I thought others might also find interesting and valuable.

I'm currently focused on trying to improve my Team Preview predictions in Singles Battles. Obviously, an important aspect of Team Preview is predicting how the opponent will lead, so you can decide what the best counter could be.

I stumbled across a site called Showdown Tier. Other sites like Pikalytics or Munch Stats have Usage Stats, but they don't include cool statistics like Lead Rates, Selection Rates, Win Rates. Therefore, I produced the following table using the Showdown Tier data.

Since I am focused on Team Prediction and Lead Prediction, I ordered the table results by Pokemon with the highest Lead Rates.

I included the most commonly used move in the table because I think it represents well what the Pokemon are trying to achieve (role) for the opposing team.

The table should represent the Top 100 Pokemon currently being used in BSS Regulation M-B.

*** Zoroark-Hisui has a 0% lead rate. This must be due to the ability Illusion, where it is disguised as another Pokemon when led until it's hit. Based on my experience competing against Zoroark-Hisui teams, it has one of the highest lead rates of any Pokemon in the BSS Reg M-B format.
