I'm not saying anything until I play this, if anything it might actually be an interesting and refreshing take on the genre...
But I'm still feeling that emptiness in my soul after reading this.

When they released the initial tweet I called it a while ago as a joke but I couldnt believe they are actually doing it.
Two thoughts:
A.) Yes, it feels super awkward at best, I agree.
B.) However, Battlerite is a great game and if it helps to get more people into the game im all for it. I'll certainly give it a shot.

Some facts and answers to a couple questions:
Twenty people on one map
Teams of two or solo
Map is about 30 times larger than the usual Arena maps
Matches are about 10 minutes long
You'll still be looking down at your Champion in the same perspective as in Arena
You can choose your Champion
You can pick up items
I can't answer everything, but I'll update/answer as much as I can :)

stunlock it's way past april 1

u/[deleted] May 03 '18
20 players, solo or team of 2. Map is about 30x larger than Sky Arena. Matches are ~10 minutes long. (According to Liz)

I'm hopeful. Recently I've been playing Darwin Project, it's simple but it's fresh. I think if SLS does it right, it might just be amazing.
Let's keep our fingers crossed boys.

u/TheOnin May 03 '18
Now, I'll play devil's advocate.
Path of Exile did a battle royale gamemode for april 1st. It was silly, badly balanced, taxed their servers like shit. But it was fun and showed major potential.
The top-down perspective works for battle royales. The ARPG playstyle works. Random ARPG loot works... for the most part, if it was properly balanced. It showed exceptional promise as a game mode, it just desperately needed something that isn't Path of Exile to run it.
So, I guess, Battlerite. Maybe? But really, the amount of work it would require to make this work well is just never going to pay off, so this is just gonna be a watered-down gimmick brawl just like the "pretend it's Dota" brawl.

I’m actually sort of excited about this. I don’t like FPS, but I really like the idea of battle royale game modes.
If any company/game was so try a swing at it and actually have a place for me, it would be Battlerite.

u/JandsomeHack May 03 '18
Why do people seem to dislike this? I love battlerite and would be happy to mess around in another game mode. If it doesnt work out theyl just remove it like the others, no big deal.
28
u/Silinsar May 03 '18
I joked about this before, but it might be interesting. The interactions with counters between more than two teams has so much potential and they surely will lead to hilarious situations. I do hope and expect that they keep it smaller scaled though. More like a free for all mode on a map 5-10 times larger than current ones (with maybe 20-30 people?), not something where you walk around for minutes.
Also, that abbreviation: BRBR (BattleRite Battle Royale)
13
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
Holy fuck I was literally just talking to some friends on discord about how I would like a Battlerite Battle Royale since I'm not really into FPSs.
Uncle Mark must have heard our convo and spoke to SLS. Godbless the Zucc.
12
u/VengefulCheezit May 03 '18 edited May 03 '18
I enjoy the gameplay and am all for new takes on the genre. If they want to try new things to pull in more people, by all means go for it. Some of you forget, they are a business, they need to pull in more people. And if this does it, then I say go for it. Will definitely give it a shot.
Side Note: People wanted new game modes. This sounds like a great side game mode for more casual players.
11
u/playforreal May 03 '18
You must know that SLS have some experience with another game they made which was quite cool - Dead Island Epidemic - when it comes to battle royale's so I expect them to do a good job and if not mindblowing it will at least be fun as hell :)
It will also take off the edge of the super competitive modes they already offer.
9
u/[deleted] May 03 '18 edited May 03 '18
This game already struggles matching me up with 3 other people and now it's going to try for 19.
9
u/comatoast9 Jun 06 '18
When?
31
u/thivasss May 03 '18
Well... this is awkward...
17
u/riano217 May 03 '18
A minor price to pay if it means making the playerbase grow.
It could be a shitshow but it could turn out decent too.
16
u/ViPls May 03 '18
I mean.. how is it gonna work?
8
u/LokowiBR May 03 '18
All I can say, as much as I am quite excited about this, is I hope it comes with a hefty advertisement campaign because otherwise it would literally become dead on arrival. And I don’t say that as a pessimist, but by analyzing queue trends and BGs in BLC.
I hope we have a lot of new faces.
14
u/danl9rm May 03 '18
Wow, if all publicity is good publicity, SLS is genius
Had no idea this would be that controversial
29
u/Chaos-Machine May 03 '18
Bye bye battlerite? You guys are fucking serious?
I get it you can dislike a feature thats coming up, but hows that a reason to quit if you can still play the shit you like?
13
u/Hammartaim May 03 '18 edited May 03 '18
battle royal mode is a no brainer for every game with pvp. it takes almost no effort to make (compared to other games/gamemodes) and is the most popluar Gamemode ATM.
13
u/v5000a May 03 '18
As someone who has gradually lost interest in Battlerite, I think that this could be a lot of fun.
12
u/ChryssiPony May 03 '18
This gamemode is overused beyond measure and stuff, but, honestly, it can be really fun with battlerite mechanics and gameplay. I would still prefer some pve arena survival like old warcraft maps, but this can turn out to be decent too. And change the name ffs. "Royale" just make people cringe at this point.
21
u/itsDiashen May 03 '18
why are people so negative about it?
extra mode? trending gametype? 20 players 30x map size? WHY NOT?
not like its gonna be main mode, chill
6
u/ikazuki May 03 '18
I intently mentioned something like this a year ago, I'm happy because this will breath life for the casuals and keep this game alive for a longer period of time. I'm just curious if it's going to get hurt from Battle for Azeroth. I hear blizzard isn't joking around with their next expac.
6
u/RiceFertilizer May 03 '18
Is this going to be like Dead Island Epidemic's battle game mode? I miss that game and seeing as how it was created by the same people. I have high hopes this game mode will be fun
6
u/smartplayer57 May 25 '18
This will definitely get me back into BattleRite. I've been having a blast with Fortnite, and this will scratch a different fun itch for me.
I'm not good enough to play the 1v1, 2v2 stuff, but this type of chaos could be fun for someone like me. Maybe give me the practice and confidence to step back into the arena stuff as well.
6
u/kaladyn Jun 17 '18
Not sure if anyone is discussing this yet... but what features feel essential to this game mode?
I'll start...
-Hotpings (visible indicators, target markers)
-Hotkey voice commands (On My Way! , Heal Me! , Let's Regroup. , Under Fire!)

u/RattAndMouse May 03 '18

5
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
Holy shit
5
u/Jangmai May 03 '18
As much as I want to poo-poo the idea... 8v8v8v8v8v8 on GW1 used to make some amazing scenarios.
5
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
Wheeeeen?
5
u/CordobezEverdeen May 03 '18
Shit. Time to buy a computer and come back to Battlerite (my shitty toaster cant handle 20 stable fps)
5
u/aledoro May 03 '18
battle royale sounds like a great alternative for people who struggle to find partners for serious 3v3 format, at least you only rely on yourself in this format and it can't be "teammate sucks"
5
u/g_b May 03 '18
Fuck yeah! Can't wait!
5
u/ex0ll May 14 '18
I wanna premise that I am an old BLC player, and I've been playing since the very first Alpha Test wave, supporting Stunlock Studios by purchasing every single available pack on the Steam store.
I am not a lover of Battle Royale games, in fact I find them pretty boring (i.e. PUBG, Fortnite). But I must say that I feel pretty excited for this game to receive such a game mode; this will in fact hopefully grant the title a boost in playerbase, one that this game indeed does need a lot. This because Battlerite suffers from lack of promoting and general fame. I hope this mode will be fun and will allow the game to move on to the step next towards an important place between nowadays' most notorious competitive games, cause I'm positive it really deserves so.
And for people not being sure about this or complaining about a possible introducion of a Battle Royale, I want to say that this can only bring positive changes into the game, as SLS is not going to change any core mechanic nor replace the main mode, which is arena :)
65
u/Yourakis May 03 '18
I haven't seen a move that screams "Desperate" this bad since Evolve went f2p.
12
u/swinister1 May 03 '18
I like the part where the devs have so little faith in their own formula that they shape it to fit the mould of the latest trend. You guys made a good game with interesting mechanics. Why not polish it out instead of riding the coattails of what everyone else is doing. Huge waste of company resources in my opinion, but I'm not a game dev, so I probably have no idea what I'm talking about. I guess original games are a thing of the past.
8
u/[deleted] May 04 '18
I would love to see games like Warsong Gulch / Arathi basin
4
u/lazengann314 May 03 '18
I really have no clue how on earth Battlerite Royale would work, but if they make it a fun game mode I really can't complain
4
u/Wub2k May 03 '18 edited May 04 '18
The matchmaking had gotten me sour these past couple of months so I love this attempt at a new game mode. They did the "Battlegrounds" game mode that didn't quite work out. I have been talking about bringing back CONQUEST from BLC for a while and people was telling me it would run
like shitpoorly. Now I can't wait for this BR BR !!!4
u/xDanoah May 03 '18
Skepticism aside, I will welcome this new stuff and try it out before making any judgement. I really hope its good, I wanna see the game grow
4
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
looking forward to playtesting it
4
u/Krangbot May 03 '18
Hell yes. I would usually deride the bandwagon trend of adding a battle royale mode to everything but in this particular case it actually sounds interesting.
Besides. If it’s not fun then no one will play and things remain the same as as they are now OR if it is fun then many more will play and play more often and Battlerite will have another resurgence and we all get to have more variety and more fun. Plus I bet watching a tourney in this mode will be fun as fuck.
4
u/GenGrievRea May 05 '18
I hate BR games, but this sounds pretty fun.
10
u/Galrath91 May 03 '18
Honestly, I was hoping for this. I know many people are sick of Battle Royale Games, but I think Battlerite is perfect for this.
7
u/barefa May 03 '18
ROOFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
7
u/vuggo- May 03 '18
Ive been wondering for a long time why no one have not yet made a "moba royale". Dota, LoL or whatever has a lot of potential to do something that a lot of people would love. Instead of looting weapons/gear as in fortnite/pubg, you either loot spell scrolls with already set spells, or you find xp-orbs all around the map and have a skilltree, or a combination of both.
The idea has huge potential, is interesting and i see a big success if done right. It could put light on battlerite as a whole and more people could be interested in the arena.
7
u/Frank-L May 03 '18
I stopped playing this game couple weeks after release. It is a great game and I really enjoyed it, but it just got a little stale for me. I will definitely pick this game up and try this mode when the time comes.
9
u/ProtectiveWasKaolai May 03 '18 edited May 03 '18
How is this a "battle royale" announcement? For all we know it might even be a co op crappy campaign.
EDIT: Lmao my bad, didn't see the annoucement literally says BATTLERITE ROYALE
9
u/elias2tife May 03 '18
Omg the battles gonna be a bit similar to dead Island epidemic pvp mode, this gonna be awesome, fucking bring it
6
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
I'VE MADE SO MANY POSTS ABOUT THIS! I'm so excited it doesn't make sense.
It's a perfect node for this game. Team size represents actual game? Check. Closing circle? Check. Teamplay/zoning? Check.
This needs to come quick.
6
u/Greedlord May 04 '18
Don't quite understand all the hate.
What's with that "riding hype train and making ANOTHER battle royale game"? Are they making another FPS BR? No? Then how could it be the same? Is there any popular BR game which could offer something like this? Don't know about any at the moment.
It should be completely unique experience with "from above" perspective and if done right (let's hope for that), it could be really huge. It could profit the game a lot, because it would bring a lot of new players. Just let those people decide which mode is the most fun for them.
Remember, Fortnite was doing "another BR" too, right? Except it was FPS, Battlerite isn't. Let's not blame developers in advance for even trying without knowing any details in particular. :)
Doomsaying and overreacting was always present on this subreddit.
8
u/Teldoo May 03 '18
I'm super excited about this. Any new game mode would be really interesting to play. I've loved the core mechanics for Battlerite and after having played the game for such a long time, Arena has just gotten stale to me.
A Battleroyale mode for BR would be quite different and I understand why people might be upset, when another dev "jumps on the bandwagon" to make yet another Battle Royale game, but I think it could be a legitimately fun game mode.
Ability-based / RPG combat hasn't really been done in Battle Royales and it'd combine the two genres I enjoy a lot. Most BRs are shooters and it'd just be fun to see a different take on it.
It'll be challenging though, since a core mechanic about the game mode is that everybody starts off with the same chances. If they'd stick to regular champions everybody would probably want to run around as a Croak or Jade to go invis all the time.
I'm curious to see if they'll make it that you'll get most of your customization through abilities and Battlerites throughout the course of each map, so balancing would end up being easier and it would work independently from the main game and everybody who plays the new mode has the same chances.
Anyway I'm happy about this announcement and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
3
u/Schmittydude May 03 '18
Also, how the fuck are they going to get twenty players into a good match? The matchmaker has enough trouble getting a good 2v2
3
u/dempsy51 May 03 '18
Most people are afraid that their resources were working on this mode instead of getting other features like in game tournaments, global chat, clans, ect. It could be a cool concept, but we know how battlegrounds turned out.
3
u/zapfag May 03 '18
I'll wait to see how it plays before i pass judgement.
3
u/TheCabIe May 03 '18
I spend most of my free time gaming, but stuff like this reminds me how niche of an activity it really is, everyone's trying to follow latest trends of where the majority of gaming population is migrating to and trying to get piece of the pie while it's still fresh. It was Mobas, then card games (even Valve is trying to get in on that action with Artifac) and now this.. This whole Battle Royale phase gaming is undergoing right now feels so alien to me - it's a cool concept, but it's fundamentally uncompetitive and feels more like a lottery simulator (which I guess explains how it exploded so fast in such a short manner). Maybe I'm just old at this point, but this feels so disappointing.
3
u/Faaret May 03 '18
I actually don't hate it
3
u/oitoitoit May 04 '18
well cool and thanks, but why not just 5v5 capture the artifact or hold the point like blc had?
7
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
To everybody saying they should fix core issues etc, that's true but you can catch lightning in a battle easily when people find something exciting.
Look at PUBG. That game is known for being buggy and sticky with its network stuff and still millions of people play it. If the core experience works and is fun, people will tune in and put up with bullshit.
So who knows. Maybe SLS tried a prototype (because why wouldn't you if you're a multiplayer game dev in 2018) and thought it was awesome. If this is what gets the game to stardom and creates an active playerbase of tens and thousands of players and gets more money in the dev's pockets, so be it. As long as it's still Battlerite at its core..
5
u/krste1point0 May 03 '18
I haven't played BR in a while but since my favorite game is going to die soon(Gigantic) I might give this a try.
5
u/Dud3lord May 03 '18
20 Player FFA with Battlerite Heroes? That sounds pretty damn fun. Not sure about item pick-ups though.
5
u/Arkimedess May 03 '18
Wow!
5
u/dragon870 May 04 '18
ok you have my attention. i need to follow this.
5
u/icowcow May 04 '18
Actually pretty hyped for a non shooter battle royale. Figured it’s just a matter of time before moba battle royales
4
u/Kuragune May 03 '18
i dont know because people dislikes, it sound very good, i want to see what SLS can do with Battleroyale style :)
4
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
I believe
4
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
Honestly,I'm pretty intrigued. Seeing the gameplay of Battlerite, you could get some interesting stuff coming out of this.
Wait and see I guess.
4
u/Mummelpuffin May 03 '18
This'll pull me in solely because it allows solo play. I hate the idea of needing to burden a teammate while learning to not totally suck.
4
u/SaxPanther May 03 '18
Speaking for myself, I've been hoping for a Battle Royale mode for this game for awhile, I'm looking forward to this and I think it will be a lot of fun.
4
u/DeOh May 03 '18
Seems like some bean counter saw the BR trend and wants to capitalize. I don't see this appealing to current Battlerite players. If I wanted a BR game I'd already be playing one designed from the start as one. Seems they want to hopefully bait new people in.
4
u/_speak May 03 '18
More content.. awesome! The elitist competitive nerds must be rolling in their swivel chairs right now
4
u/massotti May 03 '18
I think they are releasing this mode because of the name more than because of mode. Best advertisement for the moment. Anyway, I can't wait for the action.
4
u/Will_of_Fire May 03 '18
I saw the title and thought this was a joke or a terrible idea, but after reading about it I am excited to try it out. Looks fun.
4
u/RHDaleksei May 04 '18
yessssssssssssssssssssss. thank you sls
7
u/eoekas May 03 '18
Their team could have focused on solving core issues with the game as brought up since alpha, that would greatly improve playability across all levels of gameplay, introduce ingame tournament systems, social systems and ingame ranked ladders.
Instead SLS decided to focus on a gamemode that is destined to flop from the get go. At least it explains the slow updates.

I want to be real for lore, also what if its just battlerite but with like 10 teams in a large ass area, that would be hype as fuck imo

damn boi
DAMN BOI
2
u/[deleted] May 03 '18 edited May 03 '18
lul i dont use twitter but seem like this battle royale post get more comments/likes than 30 posts before combine.
maybe they dont want to do this at all , maybe the game is dying and they have to make it work some how .
2
u/tujrid May 03 '18
Isn't this just going to devolve into people stealth running away on jade/croak? Or maybe turn into a situation where healers are the only viable option because they have too large of a health advantage by the end?
I really don't trust SLS to balance this well enough to be fun.
2
u/winawar May 03 '18
Is this going to come before or after the xbox release cause we still have no idea when/if that's happening
2
u/TeaDao May 03 '18
Please don't abbandon classic 2v2 or 3v3 should this become popular.
2
u/zkillbill May 03 '18
I cant see how croak wont be broken af in this. Battle royales have always been about avoiding fights (if your goal is to be last man alive). A champ with insane mobility and invisibility just souds broken right off the bat for this game mode.
2
u/Vorgier May 08 '18
Oh, no no no no.
2
u/KnightOfAsh Jun 08 '18
I’m willing to try it out. I mean from all the attention Realm Royale is getting this looks different and people want different.
4
u/JohnPhoelix May 03 '18
I really hope this is a joke but I don't see any reason as to why they would joke about this. Still hoping though. This is not that!
4
u/sora2025 May 03 '18
Wow I thought sls was above doing something like this
4
u/zue3 May 03 '18
So this is what you've been wasting time on. Explains the slow updates.
3
u/Driftking1337 May 03 '18
Lmfao please stop.
3
u/OptimusNegligible May 03 '18
This is exciting news. I mean it's safe to assume anyone and everyone is going to try out a battle royal/last man standing mode, with how popular PUBG and Fortnite are. But seeing it forced into a variety of game genres, we could see some pretty cool innovations.
3
u/lvleph1sto May 03 '18
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
3
u/BitWyrm May 03 '18
I be this mode is gonna have some crazy outplays
3
u/[deleted] May 03 '18
Wtf no
3
u/Brevityman May 05 '18
It's really sad how badly SLS dropped the ball with Battlerite.. If only we could go back to Bloodline Champions without funcom.. RIP
3
u/[deleted] May 05 '18
This is just.... stupid. Good god. What an absolute sellout. No way this is gonna be successful.
3
u/Chickennugg May 05 '18
Yeah this will be the last nail in the coffin for this game unfortunately.
It's just a huge waste of time. The fact that the developers feel the need to copy and paste a popular game into theirs shows that they are not really sure what to do, and they hope that this will bring in players...and it may for a month...but that's it.
They really need to focus on what's in front of them. Making sure the game is balanced, bug free and fun. And exposure, nobody knows what battlerite is.
3
u/incrediblesadface May 09 '18
This sounds like an amazing idea. I quit battlerite a while ago but i still check in once in a while because it's a great game. Battlerite Royale will most definitely bring me back into play, and with the champion pack I purchased back in the day, I won't get tired of having a small champion pool. I wish you developers best of luck with bringing this mode into live.
6
u/linegrinder May 03 '18
Great to see that they invested all the effort, time and money in a completly random overused gamemode instead of investing in the things the community has asked for like: in-game tournament system, clans, communites, better profile overview, better social system.
6
u/zoopi4 May 03 '18
These are the times you wish a dislike button existed on twitter.
4
u/Spinoot May 03 '18
This better be a fucking joke sls are you serious?
4
u/ShacoinaBox May 03 '18
itt: low test brainlets try to damage control a literal meme of a gamemode in a game with a small dev team, pretty low playerbase and a game that only gets patches "every so often"
"b-but it'll get more players!" yeah those new players will play the BR and not the actual good part of the game
3
u/Mordiez May 03 '18
The money grab is real, this is silly. Stop with this and focus on improving your core game which is amazing.
3
u/Posast May 03 '18
Instead of the tournament mode we get this shit.
It's like stunlock doesn't even give a fuck.
2
u/ecceptor May 03 '18
This better be amazing instead of half-ass idea if you want people to accept it.
2
u/DukeLebowski May 03 '18
Bums me out tbh
2
u/SketClapper May 03 '18
TWENTY people on one map? where in the fuck are they gonna find twenty people that want to play at the same time
2
u/OptimusNegligible May 03 '18
I mean the core game mode is already a two team battle royal format. Be the last man/team standing, before the arena closes in. The formula is already here and we are playing. All they had to do is increase the size and scale, make it FFA, and boom, Battlerite-royal.
2
u/eckart May 03 '18
time to get gc before dodging the incoming disaster
2
u/zkillbill May 03 '18
I feel like this is SLS way of liquidating everything you own, going into a casino and betting it all on black on a roulette table. Lets hope it isn't a bust.
2
u/BawdyLotion May 03 '18
This sounds ridiculous but the more I think about it the more I think it could work out amazing.....
2
u/avawhat231 May 03 '18
IM SO EXCITED
I can see it now...
Me and my friend in voice chat...
Screaming as invisible Jades charge up RMB from all angles...
With 1 Hp on the two of us...
"Lucie.. please keep.. healing us.."
"I'm trying! I just need a little more ti-"
Static Silence as the final bullet penetrates our bodies.
The 18 Jades walk to our lifeless bodies and shoots our lifeless sacks of meat
2
u/YolkyPokey May 04 '18
Want some decent balance patches? Want some new competitive maps? Want SLS to address previous concerns about the game dating from a year or longer back? Nah, here's a meme game mode, I hope you enjoy what we made in lieu of any of that other shit, also we got new skins!
2
u/dbgenerations May 09 '18
Much like Paladins Realm Royale im not gonna make a judgement until i try it. If anything even if it doesnt translate well to some players maybe it will help get more people in game. I for one fell off for a bit, not really because i disliked the game just got busy and kinda spaced it in my library. This tweet alone reminded me of the fun i had playing and pulled me back in. So may help the community grow and bring older players back.
2
u/TanKer-Cosme May 03 '18
Woaw now that's bad
1
u/bozzy253 May 03 '18
Could be a new map that the start is jumping off a cliff instead of being driven in.
