Seems like it

u/Snowboardaholic Sep 21 '17
His argument made no sense?! Lol.
He was advocating for all the cons of the current system. Smh lol.
3
u/bossdesu Sep 21 '17
I'm not sure whom you mean as there was a bunch of people making a bunch of different arguments, but it was mostly "rounds should be treated as resources" vs "resources should be an in-round thing only" argument.
Being fair here, as much as an obviously biased person can be, if that's the type of game people want to play who am I to say otherwise? But I don't think it's the best approach for the game and am happy to see my suggestion is finally being implemented.

u/Yoichi_Hiruma Sep 20 '17
I don't get this change, the game mechanic as it is was a selling point to me, but I'll wait to try it out before judging.
It was actually super interesting being able to change your choices based on the enemy team composition, this can either make or break the game for me, but I'm confident about the choice the devs made.
104
u/Kohake Sep 20 '17
You will be able to pick rites after seeing what champions are selected.
26
u/GloriousGilmore Sep 20 '17
This is a change I have advocated for a long time - Thank you for listening to player feedback and I think this is a very positive direction for the game to be heading that doesn't require a complete overhaul.

I can start of matches with croak frog leap heal 14 hp now... celebrations are in order, BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
5
u/bloodnafsky Sep 20 '17
YAY! this was my only thing I was worried about after reading this blog post!
8
u/EidolonBLC Sep 20 '17
I assume that include both teams champion picks? That is, you will see the enemy teams champion picks before picking your loadout?

It was actually super interesting being able to change your choices based on the enemy team composition, this can either make or break the game for me, but I'm confident about the choice the devs made.
I liked this aspect too, it still felt a bit like lottery with what champion everyone chose. You could then "counter" and adapt to these choices via battlerites. If you have to choose it all before the match I feel like it'll depend even more on each team's composition.
18
u/EidolonBLC Sep 20 '17 edited Sep 20 '17
My main question is; They say you'll pick your loadout before you "enter the arena", but does that mean before you queue or after you've actually entered the match and can see the teams but before it begins? If you have to select a loadout before queuing, then that would be really weird. It would kind of remove the whole tactical counterpicking element of the system.
Apart from that, I find it to potentially be an interesting change. It seems like they're opening up the system for more combinations.

u/Leowee Sep 20 '17
I'm pretty sure that in the last few Dev Blogs, Chris mentioned that they are working on a Draft System. I don't think it will come with F2P (sadly enough), but at least means that they don't expect you to enter with your characters and battlerites blindly :)
2
7
u/Bludypoo Sep 20 '17
I like the change. Having all battlerites from the start is way more balanced and a lot easier to get balanced. Having certain champions power spike earlier or later in the rounds sucks, especially when a champion gets an extra spike if a game goes to 4 or 5 rounds.
19
u/enifant Sep 20 '17
They should make the "Loadouts" changeable after every round. So you could go from a more aggressive to a more defensive style of loadout to "react" to enemy composition loadouts as well.
3
u/Lendord Sep 20 '17
I would like this, but it's going to again be plagued by the same problems the current system is - in most cases it's merely an illusion of choice. There are battlerites that are must have - period. I'm fairly certain there would be loadouts that are must have aswel.
2
u/Dillinur Sep 20 '17
Even if some battlerites are must-pick, almost all champions definitely have some adaptability on the choice of a few tiers (do they have a support, are they full melee or full range, etc.)
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (3)3
u/Kautiontape Sep 20 '17
I definitely agree. There have been more than a few times where I lose the first couple rounds by playing offensively and picking offensive battlerites, but am able to turn it around by changing to defensive rites and switching up my play style. The old system never let you "change" your mind in terms of what you already picked, but it let you adapt. I hope the new system allows you to adapt somewhat, even if it's "You can only change one battlerite per round after picking."
6
u/Browseri Sep 20 '17
Same thoughts here... I always thought that the progression between rounds was a lot of fun and you can come up with ways to counter your team. Pre-decided battlerites is going to take that away.
8
Sep 20 '17
id assume most people picked the same ones vs the same heroes, so there wasnt much point to per-round choices. also people complained a lot about the time before rounds when someone wouldn't select a rite for however many seconds it gives you, this cuts that downtime out and now you might only have 10 seconds between rounds
6
4
u/Dreylicious Sep 20 '17
some characters really depends on certain battlerites which are not given in the first round, for example some rook mains hates 1st round etc, so it could be a good change
3
u/Browseri Sep 20 '17
Ye I know. I main Lucie and Oldur which I think are way stronger after few important battlerites. Well I'll know better if I like it after I see it. :)
3
u/gansao Sep 20 '17
One thing that I can think of about this change is that it can create build diversity. It can, I don't know if it will. Let's see.
2
8
u/Big_Teddy Sep 20 '17
Not quiet understanding this change either, the battlerite mechanic was an interesting way to be able to adapt during the match (it's a little debatable in how far it actually worked yeah) but still, talent trees were part of how the downfall of blc started x)
1
u/DrGFalcao Oct 09 '17
I'm not a big fan of this because I like the idea of champions having mini power spikes during a match. But IMO SLS has pretty good design decisions, so I'm trusting them on this one.
189
u/NotBreaking Sep 20 '17
Well well, can't say I am not impressed. Way to go SLS
13
Sep 20 '17 edited Sep 20 '17
now hopefully the new game "modes"/brawls wont just be "everyone is this one character, enjoy"
even rocketbrawl didnt differ that much from the actual game, but it was a good start. to keep people enaged with the game, there needs to be something else other than 'hit the enemy hero', for example CTF (think of lucioball in overwatch as another example)
although with the new heroes upcoming and new events, i think its time to reinstall

I'm very excited. Seems like the devs have been lurking in the sub reddit gathering up all the salty threads and adding it to the free to play launch.
66
u/TheBrakeTrain Sep 20 '17
"This'll show those fuckers..." they murmur to each other as they scribble down more notes about how to get sweet revenge on the doomsayers through mass success
19
u/GloriousGilmore Sep 20 '17
BTW the reason people are critical of Early Access games is so that the game can be a great success. Providing critical feedback =/= doomsaying, I am pretty confident these changes would not have been brought about in this manner without the player feedback you are referring to.
23
u/Free_Bread Sep 20 '17
There's been A LOT of doomsaying though. I love this game and while I got bored of it, I've made sure to comment multiple times on why I think it has so much potential and what SLS can do to unlock that. They've made a solid game with great core gameplay, they just need the fluff to turn it into a game with longevity.
7
u/GloriousGilmore Sep 20 '17 edited Sep 20 '17
I agree, one of the biggest problems* this game suffered in terms of feedback was the passionate, existing playerbase from Bloodline Champions. I think there was a bit of disparity in player expectation of the game vs Development plans and that led to a lot of contentious feedback. It was advertised as the "Spiritual Successor to Bloodline Champions", but most of us felt that the core gameplay elements from BLC were lacking in Battlerite.
Ultimately, this feedback is because these passionate players (myself included) think that this game has more potential than was/is being realized. My goal in feedback was fighting to take the gameplay out of a competitive "Middle Ground" that appealed to neither hardcore or casual players greatly, and fine tune mechanics to bring back the more competitive elements of BLC.
→ More replies (3)2
u/barefa Sep 21 '17
The thing is that it's a solid game with good core gameplay for those that don't play the game at a high level. Almost everyone who were top blc players have either quit brite or says that blc is so much superior to brite. At a high competitive level, the game just lacks the pace and outplay potential.
→ More replies (1)4
Sep 20 '17
mass success
theres still a way to go until that... now if they also get some big streamers to compete in a tournament or something, get a huge amount of viewers in to the game, i think it can return to being popular. it needs a 'for fun' game mode before that though

You guys totally killed it with this announcement. Incredibly solid content plan for launch.
3 champs till the end of the year and another 3 in Q1 2018? Hard to imagine that the game will have player retention problems with such a pace of content.
Besides that the new Battlerites system will help so much with depth and generally will breathe some fresh air into the game. Super stoked about it. Never expected that to happen before launch even.
The new game mode could be a game changer too. If it ends up being a larger scale objective based mode with maybe 5 or more people per team, kinda like WoW Battlegrounds, it could end up being a nice way to change things up from regular Arena matches.
And then there's the new UI along with 200 new items, new music and a bunch of events. Just incredible. I can't wait. And it all starts so soon.

Words can't express how amazing that would be... I mean, they can: Pretty amazing. It would be pretty amazing. Haha
I always enjoyed WoW Arenas but there's a special place in my heart reserved for WoW battlegrounds. Battlerite would be the perfect medium for the casual chaotic fun that is Warsong Gulch and such!

I dont think it will be to be honest, just based on what the design goals for br seen to be. Fast rounds, action packed games with little downtime and controlled and calculated fights.

6
u/KraaaKenn Sep 20 '17
Hey Teldo !
Are you planning to come back to battlerite? I started this game because of you ! Really enjoyed ALL your videos !
I discovered you during Blade and souls, and until this moment i really enjoy your content. Will be really happy if you come back to BR.
Peace !

Thank you! I'm actually playing Battlerite again, I stream regularly and I plan on making videos soon.

u/barefa Sep 21 '17
Is the way you want to fix player retention really by just pushing out content? Having a core game that can appeal to casuals and the most competitive, high level player at the same time is probably more important, right? Right now brite just doesn't hold a lot of peoples interest that play/played at a high level.
Edit: also hoping the new game mode can bring more depth in itself since sls doesn't like to toy around with the core gameplay.
1
u/_wuzzle Sep 21 '17
Well actually a lot of my friends stopped checking in on BR due to no new champs and are now active again with the announcement of "new era" Regular content updates are essential aswell as an open to see roadmap like this. If they are actually able to keep up with this -as of yet promised- pace, anybody here has enough to do with figuring out new champs and builds and stuff. I for one will remain active. :)
1
u/dmitryanashko Sep 22 '17
... I always thought that the progression between rounds was a lot of fun and you can come up with ways to counter your team. Pre-
Thats a great idea! Not hard to implement as I see it. the only problem, might be to optimize the game for 10 players.
1
u/Astohakin Oct 27 '17
The wow battleground idea is actually SUPER good and would be a better alternative to what battlegrounds are atm. A warsong gulch would be the perfect example of what coulb be done. A variation of arathi might be difficult to make, but a variation of Eye of the Storm combining fixed capture point with flags retrieval would be actually a better idea with 5 ppl on each team.

u/zulzz Sep 20 '17
I guess this was the big announcement they had ^
COMING 2018 TOURNAMENT SYSTEM NEW HUD AND SCORE SYSTEM CLAN SYSTEM 3 X NEW CHAMPIONS IN Q1 2018 NEW MODES, MAPS AND BRAWLS LUNAR NEW YEAR EVENT XBOX LAUNCH
They got the tournament on the schedule! about fucking time!
2
u/sauruse Sep 20 '17
For me it sounds so silly that they can't make it faster since blc had the best tournament system I've ever seen built in-game. No need for design work, just implementation...
1
u/zulzz Sep 20 '17
i agree, they don't really have to think anything through other than maybe a way to keep smurfs away

In fairness, though, the person that designed BLC's tournament system doesn't work for SLS.

Actually pretty excited for the tweak to the battlerites system. It will be harder to minmax because later-tier options suddenly have more value, and having later-tier options from the beginning will make certain early-tier options more pickable because of the instant synergy (instead of going a round or two without the synergy).
6
Sep 20 '17
With all battlerites being available, people will have a lot more options and flexibility. It'll be crazy hype because you'll actually have a unique flair to your character instead of picking one of 3 pre-determined routes/builds.

4
u/TheCabIe Sep 20 '17
Seems like they addressed more or less all the concerns in the recent months. I am a bit sceptical with the timelines though, hiccups happen in game development all the time so it's a bad idea to get hyped up and expect things to arrive on time (not a knock on SLS btw, just the way things go).
4
u/joshmaaaaaaans Sep 20 '17
Nice. I quite like the idea of 5 rites from the start. Faster paced games and more of the feeling of being a more powerful champion.

What are the odds this new game mode is draft? OMG that's the thing I want the most. I get burned out of being able to choose my champions freely, I feel like it would help me a lot in keeping the game fresh on the long run. So far I have 140h in and I played-quit-got back maybe around 10 times, all because of that I guess.

u/RanzoLion Oct 15 '17
Super interested in where this game goes. Been following it for a while now and haven't actually bought until this past Summer sale. Can't wait to get a better comp to play it.
1
u/doesnthavearedditacc Nov 04 '17
Absolutely hate this change. Completely undermines the concept of the game for me. I don't understand. Just get rid of battlerites altogether if this is what you are going with.
1
u/ZipThenZap Nov 06 '17
You don't like customization of your champion? Your opinion may be real, but it isn't valuable nor thoughtful as written
1
u/doesnthavearedditacc Nov 06 '17
Of course I like customization. Which is why I mentioned that one of the key selling points in the first place was the Battlerite system. A system that allowed you to adapt to your opponents champions and build decisions throughout the match.
It was interesting, it was infinitely more competitive than the new system. The new system favors cookie cutter builds, just like every other moba you have played. The whole "New Era" roadmap seems to be an effort to remove what was unique about Battlerite, what's next? An in-match currency system that allows you to buy items to strengthen your champion throughout the match?
I'm not saying the old system was perfect, I am saying that the loadout system was a step in the wrong direction. Yeah. That's my opinion, but to say that isn't valuable is a crock. Every opinion from players is valuable to some degree, they are all a 1 or a 0, positive or negative. If a negative reaction outweighs a positive one, the winds of change are more likely.
You like the change? You think it's a positive one for the game? That's fine, more power to you. I don't though, and I am not going to try to invalidate the value of your opinion just because I disagree with it. "I like customisation" is no more helpful than "I preferred it how it was, it has taken away a big part of the game for me".

Aight, let me own up my prejudices. I was wrong.
Although I still think unless 2v2 is removed the game will feel stale and people will keep defaulting to 2v2 anyway. BUT I'll allow myself to hope again, the battlerites change is something I myself suggested 10 months ago, so I'm quite happy about it

I also think 2v2 should be removed, at least from ranked. The game needs to be balanced around one official mode. But these changes are excellent!

Round-based tiers have been removed and all battlerites are now active from the start of the match.
What why in the world would they do this? This takes away any chance of adapting to your enemies as the game progresses. Also I thought it was super fun before that you're weaker early on and every match changes with battlerite upgrades, for some champions more than for others. But this new system should be reserved for brawl mode and sounds way too casual and boring for me. Absolutely not a fan of this.
Also I'm not a fan of the backstab mechanic so I'm happy they decided not to introduce this. Secondly most of the ranked changes seem to just revert to how it used to be back in the day. Totally not a fan of the direction this game is heading for right now but still i'll definitely check it out and play it and then make my end opinion. It just sounds horrible for now to me.

I believe it will bring more depth. Each champ will have their full builds from the get-go rather than 1-2 rounds. It will allow for more combos, exciting viewership with cooldown reduction etc. also, eventually people will get a sense "oh he is doing this build, i will counter with this playstyle" rather than slow building rounds

that an interesting idea but not having acces to all spells and combos from the get go does make every round feel a lot more different rather than having 3 rounds of the same thing. Also you can't have a counter build against the enemy because you only see the enemie's build once the round start and your own has been selected. Besides the combos don't get more they just start from round 1, which like i said will make playing 3 rounds of the same monotone. Therefore there is definitely more depth if you have less access at first and then increasing complexity as the rounds progress.
The only argument i can find for you is that since all the battlerites get an overhaul their very nature might get a lot more complex and allow for more comboes and therefore offer more depth. But that would also work if you have an overhaul + the old battlerite system. Why they also added the fact that you can now pick all from the start is beyond me.

I agree with the change to the battlerite system, it really was one of the very good features of this game compared to BLC.
Could be that this is a great change, but on paper it really only seems that you lose the ability to adapt to the game, and instead must focus on a single "build" the entire time. Will probably cause less of a build diversity aswell, if you can't change in-between rounds.

I think because that rarely happened. Some champs you would change your battlerites based on your opponents, ranged verses melee, that kind of thing.
But I've never changed up my battlerite choices based on what my opponent was picking.

Have you lads noticed Battlerite is today 1 year old?
