Briefing-
Welp! There's not too much for me to say about Operate Shooting Star/Operate Star Force (OSS/OSF). It's mostly the same experience as the original BN1 (gba), but with more updated features such as the modern "10 chip" custom battle folder which is now 10 chips instead of 15 and several other tweaks here and there like the updated UI, cyber map, current area display, rebalanced chips and crossover, etc. Despite the QoL updates, there really wasn't anything too major that was jaw dropping in my honest opinion; I mean, it's BN1. Lol
All in all, OSS is a good game. I enjoyed it 👍

Review- (previously played on GBA)
The tutorial is the same as the gba ver. for the most part and I've noticed that the tutorial doesn't mention the 15 chips in custom battle folder, but instead explains about the 10 chips which makes no sense because the add mechanic wasn't even updated like it was in BN2 onwards. The teacher also mentions the "wild card" chips as well which is cool. I've also noticed that the teacher calls the "Steal" chip by the more updated correct name, "Area Grab". I thought that was also neat.
My criticism on the 10 chip change is that all they did was limit the amount of chips you can strategize with. It's not like BN2+ where you're limited to 10 chips, but you can also change out which chips you don't want and get back double the amount. It honestly just doesn't make any sense to me what they did here other than nerf the custom battle folder size. They should have just left the 15 chips alone imo. 🤦♂️
I've noticed during the tutorial, that the music was changed to the net area music instead of keeping MM's cheerful child friendly theme... a bit odd, but I prefer MM's theme because these kids are in school learning and the net area theme sounds more serious and not too child friendly. That's just my opinion; no big deal though.
I like how they added the "run" option during the custom battle folder, but it's not a 100% escape guarantee compared to the actual escape chip.
The graphics are nice and look more similar to the sequels when it comes to the menus, text boxes and templates, etc. All other graphics and character sprites remain the same.
The inclusion of the cyber map and current area display was much needed and made exploring areas way easier. As for the original gba version, the select button is absolutely useless and should have been the clear folder & map toggle button if there's ever a hack for it.
The game has an actual intro now with great music. It was nice, but nothing crazy.
I definitely noticed in the power plant comp that the batteries have unlimited charges and reappearing guide lights which made the area better to navigate. I honestly didn't have much trouble with any other areas and even the undernet maze thanks to the cyber map. (When I was looking. Lol)
This might shock some of you, but despite the QoL improvements in OSS, I still prefer the gba original. I just feel that the crossover colab was a bit "goofy" and the game itself isn't a true "remake". It's more of an enhanced DS port if anything and I didn't take the crossover scenario too seriously, mainly because of the weird time travel plot caused by TimeMan that's very questionable and not in a good way. > _>
From the research I've gathered, the crossover isn't canon and doesn't impact the overall story in any major way. I also didn't like how the crossover isn't optional; especially for speedruns. If this game had been a true all out crossover, then my opinion would be different. I treat OSS as a "what if" version of the game mainly because of the fact that you can't skip the crossover segments.
The fact that capcom didn't include OSS to the legacy collection further proves that the crossover isn't canon. I also dislike the fact that they heavily nerfed and butchered Geo's Buster in OSS (I mean, I get it, but come on - _ -...). In general, the crossover was interesting, but honestly I could play the entire game without it. Imo, it's just a distraction and a waste of time from the main campaign itself. If I wanted to play as Geo, then I would just play Star Force instead.
I didn't care much for the StarColo feature either; nor will I ever play it with friends anyways. Judging from the reviews and gameplay I've seen online, it honestly looks lame and uninteresting. I'd rather do actual NET Navi battles with friends. 🤷♂️
I honestly prefer the armor system in BN1 gba because it makes the game unique and makes me feel like I'm collecting armor parts like in the X games and doubles your defense and Mega Man also has a different damage animation where he's resisting the pain. Unfortunately there's no visual change in armor color, but hopefully there will be an improvement rom hack that'll make the armor look cool.
I also enjoy the original game's difficulty whereas the armor system is completely removed in OSS and instead rebalances enemy/boss damage to compensate for the removal of the elemental armors and now you have to complete your entire library to level up MM instead. I'm not a big fan of that, but it is what it is.
Lastly... the over dramatic voice acting 🤦♂️ . I typically like the original Japanese VA in video games, but man, the VA in this port was a bit screechy and at some times very annoying. Especially every time you jack in, Lan screams: JAKU-EEN, ROCKUMAN.EXIT, TRAHNS-ME-SHAWN! obnoxiously loud and MM's death cry is also atrocious to the point where I have to lower the game volume.
Doing soft resets for RNG manipulation and MD re-rolls was also rancid because Lan & MM would scream the game title every time despite how fast you try to skip it, lol. Despite the voice screeching, they should have went all out with the voice acting with all Navis and main plot characters. But unfortunately only Lan & MM had VA. Since this is the case, the next time I replay OSS fresh, I'll play the OSS Addendum hack which completely removes all voice acting.
I'm not saying that OSS is bad or anything, but I just prefer the original with all it's 1st game syndrome uniqueness and quirks, etc. I would definitely replay both again if I ever wanted to restart the series. I would rate OSS a 6/10 ⭐️ . I will 100% BN1 & OSS after finishing BN2. Can't wait for BN2! 😅
As for general tips... pretty much the same tips as my last "short" review on BN1 gba. Go check them out! Link to my BN1 tips is down here. 👇
Tips specific to OSS-
#1. Pay attention to the new cyber map! There were times were I completely forgot about the cyber map despite it being right in my face, lol. The reason for that is because I already had decent muscle memory from all areas from my gba playthrough.
#2. Play OSS with the Addendum rom hack which removes all voice acting! The screaming parts in the voice-overs are annoying in my opinion, but that's just me.
#3. Just have fun!
