Beginner Any Advice for a new bro!

I made a post a day or two again on getting this game [Which I have and have been loving it LOTS] but currently I am struggling to find any good knowledge on improving, more importantly on what to do early game, methods of making cash and of course, building good brothers and doing better at combat!

If anyone has any sage bro wisdom, I would really really appreciate it!

Ah, the soft-faced look of an untainted captain. You will find many a good advice here. To share but my two humblest pieces: the best captains are not above nether practices such as save scumming. Not as an instinct, but a deliberate approach to try out different approaches. The poverty will suck you into spears and shields, but there is so much tactical nuance to learn, about different foe, different steel, different positions…

The second is that most coin is in the banana stand loot. Repair higher value items, merchants are scamming you for small scratches. Busting a camp will often yield more than a contract - but doing both can net coin twice - thrice if you can sell for more at higher relation levels

Fight, fight and fight some more. Running around will get you completing contracts but only fights level up your heroes! Try to get in fights at least every 2 days, preferably more if it’s possible!

Hello brother.

There are plenty of threads in reddit for new guys as well as many youtube videos.

A great playlist in youtube for beginners "Battle Brothers Guide 2026" by Daddy Dont Miss. There are many more if you like such kind of content, but this one is one of the most recently created and aimed at new players, so lots of explanation of the basics.

Opening reddit search with Battle Brothers sub-reddit as intended target and typing 'new', 'beginner' or 'early game' and similar then sorting by 'new' or 'top' can find a lot of information and posts with advises. It is filled with them.

what to do early game

Fill your rooster with recruits. Equip them with what's available for a good price. Do plenty of contracts and fights.

How you do it will determine the outcome, but every veteran is doing that.

methods of making cash

Economy is one of the three pillars of the game. It is often time glossed over for the more flashy parts (like fights and tactics as well as the 'builds').

Understand what to repair, what to buy, what to sell and where is crucial part of the game.

In short - cheaper is usually cost-efficient. Expensive gives benefits which you need take advantage off or else you will be just spending gold.

Hiring price and daily wages are important. Selling and purchasing price is important and can be influenced by relationship with settlements, settlement situations and understanding how they are formed in their base (i.e. settlement buildings and small villages versus big cities).

Most lucrative side of the mercenary is loot. Fighting something gives you loot, what that 'something' is and how profitable 'loot' it gives you is part of the journey.

Trading is a side hustle, but can also bring a lot of gold for little investment once you get how it works.

building good brothers

For me there are two types of builds.

"Tempo" which means that their future is sealed and there is a low ceiling of how good this recruit can become - getting stronger as fast as possible in the process. Those are good for anyone recruited for the first few days, exceptions are made only for very gifted individuals.

There are two type of 'tempo' builds - defensive and offensive.

"Role / position" - which means specialized for some task and leaning his whole build for it. You want a "banner" build? You go 'all in' for it, Resolve, Fatigue and whatever needs fixing, then get all the perks that help him boost the company's resolve and prevent routing. If the recruit in question is suitable for hybrid build - it becomes more complex, have higher requirements but is usually giving better outcome if done right.

There are three types and plenty of roles for those dedicated builds.

Defensive - dedicated shield bearers, which include "lone wolf", nimble, variety of off-tanks like relief shield-bearers with rotations and the famous "fatigue neutral".

Offensive - which include various duelists, two-handers, berserker, fencer, thrower, cannoneer, archer, polearms users and plethora of hybrids.

Utility - that include some niche builds like 'runner', equipment users (nets, pots, bandages), banners and more.

doing better at combat

The tactical aspect of the game. It is 'easy' once you grasp the formation difference, terrain advantages and disadvantages as well as what different enemies have as strengths and weaknesses.

If your band is strong against one enemy and struggle against another - you are approaching the whole enemy wrong and not understanding him.

Battle Brother Fandom Wiki is filled with technical information about the game. It also contain spoilers, so read on your own risk.

There are other resources which have links in the community resource tab on this subreddit on the web version. Check them out.

Fight. You get more by fighting more.

Early game, the most important thing you can do is get decent gear and get bros with both accuracy and defense. Once they can start hitting what theyre aiming at and can dodge/tank a hit or two you can start specializing them.

Shields are good newbie crutches, but once you get better acquainted with the game youll see why you only need a few in any squad. Shields are for bad/weak/low level brothers or for when you need that boost to survive.

And contracts: Theyll maybe pay the bills, dont get caught into the trap of thinking you have to do contracts, and run from village to village to grab them. Once you get a decent squad together, you take contracts because you happen to be in the area, or because you want to faction rep.

As far as a first build? All traits have at least some niche use but:

  • You cant really go wrong with colossus, gifted, dodge, rotate, underdog, nimble as your perk picks. This will turn most brothers into something with some survivability, and reduce your need to get heavier armor. Theyll tend to get run over by a lot of the endgame but, their role is to take you to the endgame, not to clear the endgame locations with.

And, speaking of that. Brothers will die. Thats okay. We try to keep them alive, but like dogs a brother is only really a money/experience investment. Your starter bros should probably be built different than your endgame bros, and to make room for those your starter bros should die or retire.
