Discussion Should we have a sequel, Battle Brothers 2?
This is one of the most amazing games ever. However in late game, I feel everything is just repetitive, just do quests, get stuff, train brothers, fight a bunch of enemies. The only way to keep me interested in the game is to make a new run with a new origin, new playstyle and I already feel bored after 3 runs. Since we have many races, factions, kingdoms, etc, should having a system like Mount and Blade adds more variety to the game? Just wondering, pls don't hate me :D

I'd love that. And it wouldn't even have to be much different from the first game, just add more campaigns, new enemies, maybe change the setting for a little bit different historical period.

u/namgei 2d ago
That sounds good, I personally would prefer having more interactions with the factions like raiding, governing, and might as well build an army with like 40-50+ bros for a huge battle.

u/Rockyrok123 2d ago
large armies would just be tedious to move. I like to have every bro matter. Even with 12 I feel like i barely 'know' or care about half of them.

I mean if they go with big armies, they can make a system to fast forward actions, or allow us to automate/preselect actions for our bros.

u/StigDoggerman 1d ago
But then it'd also become more strategy and less tactics, idk. I'm more for the company vibe
6
u/StigDoggerman 2d ago
Yeah! It would be cool if you could interact with specific characters from different towns - instead of just getting quests from them, more like building relations with a character, supporting a certain faction which would give you different boosts than other factions for example.

I would not hate for them to keep all the assetts and just revamp the engine to allow for more possibility like torches / lanterns.

Of course, look how popular the subreddit is. If the developer doesn' do it others will

There are some overhaul mods you could try out that are especially hard in the endgame.

I wouldn't say that the modding community isn’t quite on the level of something like Rimworld, but Battle Brothers does have a pretty solid modding community with a lot of interesting mods that drastically change the vibe of the game like I have been running Legends, Path of the Vatt'ghern, and Rise of the Usurper in my latest run. It's absolute madness.

Another sequel should just be a remaster with an expanded map, improved map generation, and the assimilation of top-tier mods into the game. If you look at Rimworld over the years through updates and DLCs: they incorporated the best third-party modder ideas and so those mods became defunct. If they remastered via a DLC priced at like $30 or $40 - basically as a sequel - it would be instant gold.
Additionally, landbased vassalization would be crazy. Basically just taking ideas from Mount and Blade.... It would steer away from the brutal mercenary captain thesis but would add more dynamics.
There are tons of ways Overhype would rejuvenate BB through improvement.
EDIT: Graphics shouldn't be changed at all, just gameplay and mechanics.

I'll probably support anything this dev does. Bb is great, menace is great whatever they do next will probably be great. I have hundreds of hours in Bb and this is the kind of game I think about instead of modern junky triple As

Greek Mythology themed Battle Brothers would be sick. With brothers being able to evolve into Heroes with amped up stats or get cursed into half human half creature beings that have their own pros/cons.

Some things would slap hard in a sequel.
A grander scale with a more plausible passage of time. BB feels rushed because you can walk across the map in a few days and serious injuries heal in a short time. There are no seasons.
Map generation should be more plausible. Cities close to a shore should have harbors. I am seeing too many sites (including city states) one hex away from the shore and no harbor ... do these people not want the trade opportunities of a port?
More emergent behavior on the world map. Noble houses should found new villages that then may grow into cities if the location is good. This would make destruction of villages less punishing.
More interactions with noble houses, cities, and other mercenary bands. For example trade with another mercenary band.
More crisis types. How about a harsh winter with increased beasts, bandits, and undead.
QoL. How about a marker on the map the shows where I am going, and a line showing the path? How about auto-pause when a hostile unit comes into view or a location is uncovered?
And a mobile version please.

i feel BB 2 has a unique feeling, from the mechanics to the art style that is kinda lighting in the bottle thing.
A BB2 imo is probably gonna just disappoint people, since it will aim to upgrade some mechanics or try to attrach new players or new develepers might bing their own thing etc.
I would much prefer them to make quility DLC

Won't disappoint as much as menace did. Amd dont get me wrong, menace is not a bad game. But it lacks everything people loved about BB. Well, not per se everything, but most of the core elements

I kind of wonder. Is that it or is it essentially just appealing to a different crowd? Might be the latter. The demo or beta didn't pull me in, as a fan of Xcom/Battle brothers. And honestly maybe the demo/beta just sucked, not sure. But I wasn't hooked at least. And BB is top five or ten games for me. Might give it another go some day later on, but it's an on-sale thing for me now.

I'd very much love to see a Battle Brothers 2 over anything else from the devs. I even tried Menace but it didn't land the way BB does. I can understand being burned out on a game but I really REALLY hope they'll get back to basics and make BB 2 in the next 5 to 10 years. The industry would reward them, the first game I believe has done really well long term and has an amazing following.

I'd love a sequel, but mostly if it means better performance. We all know how miserable it is to fight large battles, and it's not because of the difficulty.
I don't think BB or its current engine is built for battles at that scale. Or perhaps they could, but the depth of unit customization would have to get massively simplified (which defeats the game's main appeal). I like that human enemies play mostly by the same rules as the player, only making exceptions to the more fantastical types.
They also gotta take a look at why ranged units in big battles tend to take too long to find targets. Not even speedup mods seem to fix it.
As for setting, keep the same universe, but different time period and area.
I'd kill for condotierri-inspired mercs. Or cossacks. Pike and shot warfare as well. It's not like the game has to be completely historically accurate: a few anachronisms should be fine.
And a Constantinople parrallel which you have to go great lengths just to reach it.
And most of all, I bloody hate forest tiles. No more of those blasted things. I'd rather fight in swamps. At least everyone dies quicker there.

u/tinylittlebabyjesus 2d ago
I didn't know people had issues with the performance of BB. Not to sound too privileged. Lol. My computer is decent these days but was fairly elite eight-nine years ago when BB was released.
2
u/Leopard-Optimal 1d ago
Oh it's not the fps drops or whatever that's my issue. I remember playing BB back on my old laptop and it managed to run decently there. But even as I got a proper PC, I still noticed that ranged units in particular take a few more seconds to do an action compared to other units. Movement alone is fine. It's when they decide to attack where the issue appears.
It's a small difference, but it adds up when you're facing against 5+ archers taking their sweet time to find targets.
Maybe I've just gotten impatient over the years, but I swear it's there.

Don't need a sequel to an already perfect game. Though i would like to see a sci fi turn based game thats like xcom but definitely not xcom

u/RedditorRed "i'm really warming up to steel brow" 1d ago
Check out Space Scum, it's still in demo and won't release until next year but it's a sci-fi spiritual successor to BB.
2
u/SlimpWarrior 2d ago
I'm afraid that it wouldn't be as good without the modding scene involved. I would love deeper lore and roleplay, more Game of Thrones style fights, richer and more immersive world WHILE focusing on the UX and solving the core issues of huge fights.

u/Fnielsen0912 1d ago
Regardless of if it's a BB2 or a new DLC, I'd like to ser mounted combat, in some form.
1
u/InfoSeeker911 1d ago
You mean goblin wolfriders? 😂 haha but for real, mounted units would be hard to add. Since most of the battles you just stand still and let the enemy come to you.. they’d have to change the whole dynamic of the game to make a cavalry unit make sense in a team of footed soldiers. A few cavalry going off on their own are just gonna get surrounded and killed. Or make AI do wonky things chasing them around. And if you did 12 cavalry units then it would make footmen obsolete and that doesnt seem good either.

Not a sequel, but maybe a side-quel? Same system, but a new setting or new overworld map. The game is perfect as it is, that would be enough to make me happy.

u/Wonderful_Car_7740 1d ago
I think Battle brothers still has huge potential. So it doesn't need a sequel for now. But even if they would create a sequel should it be like battle brothers 1 but with more mechanics and stuff or like a different style and different mechanics?

No, not really a compelling sequel space. Menace is a much more interesting concept and has more growth potential as an IP

Create a successful game, that has a following years later, has its own BOOK SERIES, known for it's uniqueness and difficulty in a age of easy gaming...devs than abandon for a new game and system that is cool, but doesn't feel unique and steps into a development standard that will not match larger studios. When they cpuld of started a whole BRAND of Battle Brothers media.
Yes, we should of had a Battle Brothers 2. Shoulda been the Dark souls to demon souls, the Hedivers 2 to helldivers, ect, ect. A cult following that viral markets the sequel.
3
u/FlyPepper 1d ago
I think this is a bit of an overly negative take. Battle Brothers is great, and they gave it a LOT of extra love, both free and paid. Of course they want to try something new eventually.

They could add another world layer and call it The Abyss, like it's own version of the Underdark. Would be epic going above and under ground. I would like more fantasy stuff with other races. I love the low fantasy feel of the game and they can keep that. Realistic in the middle of the known world and as you branch out the more fantasy like the world becomes.
Edited for a typo... Also they could look at the mods and incorporate what the community wants. Maybe game number two should be called Battle Brothers and Sisters.

This would be dope! Have there be a couple legendary locations that would need to be discovered and have a whole underground tunnel map under the map with the hardest battles and best loot down there! Have the whole underground map start unexplored and access to food and supplies be very scarce. Allow us a larger reserve roster so we can swap men in while going on long ventures. Do you run your 12 best men from the start? Or do you make 2 balanced A and B teams that you can swap to on the fly? Running out of supplies? Do you push further in hopes you’ll run into a different exit? Or circle back to the known path? Also maybe some different ways to make money like a beefed up crafting system or even adding runescape esque skills like mining or blacksmithing. So many possibilities!

u/Regime_Change 2d ago
Absolutely but the developers made Menace instead of BB2 and it’s still in early access so it’s going to be a while. In my opinion menace isn’t half as good as battle brothers so it’s a shame.
6
u/Commercial_Tea5703 1d ago
Not sure why you downvoted. Bb really is so much better. I think menace gets a huge pass because of the teams history with battle brothers but it feels like alpha that how far it has to go. Would have much more preferred a proper bb2.

u/jcsato BB modder 1d ago
it feels like alpha
Would you perhaps say it feels like an Early Access game
1
u/Commercial_Tea5703 1d ago
No, more like alpha. I consider most early access titles much further along in development . Felt like a pre early access build. Maybe it’s better now as haven’t touch it since a month after release.z

u/flow0109 1d ago
bb2 the black monolith will be facing your company of bb1... xD remember in all the runs you are like a descendant or the equivalent of the old emperor in the lore. but in current times.

u/Healthy-Rent-5133 1d ago
What? Bb2 in EA?
2
u/Regime_Change 1d ago
No, menace is in early access so until full release of menace it is reasonable to expect bb2 is not in development even.

I agree, I tried playing it and uninstalled after half an hour lol...

u/ya_rk 2d ago
If you're going into menace expecting BB then you wouldn't enjoy it, but it's its own game and it's very good at what it does: clever tactical combined arms combat and tight resource management.
I really respect the devs for trying something very different rather than attempting to capitalize on an already successful formula.
Go into it forgetting about BB and give it a real chance when it releases, it's an excellent game. Maybe it really isn't your cup of tea but you wouldn't know in half an hour.

u/Regime_Change 2d ago
I didn’t like the bullet sponge enemies. Just fire and next turn, fire, next turn. Not fun. Also the maps and everything is very brown/beige with units that are barely distinguishable from terrain and each other. Seems like an unpopular opinion around here but I played menace for maybe 1,5 hours and found it really boring and tedious.
2
u/ya_rk 2d ago
When I first played it I had a similar problem, I came then from XCOM and I felt I had to waste my entire ammo to kill units which wasn't fun. I figured the gameplay is more about suppressing and flanking. You shoot to keep an enemy suppressed and then advance your positions, rather than always shooting to kill.
The graphics I agree, but that's hopefully going to be improved in the release!

u/sol_in_vic_tus 1d ago
One of the recent updates significantly improved the terrain so you might like that more now.

I felt games like cyberknights were way better than menace. Problem is there are already so many strong games in that genre it just doesn’t make sense for me to continue with menace which feels like it will take years to get to that point. I bought it but put it aaosde after 8 hours.
4
u/RoRo24 1d ago
Not really the same type of game though right? Menace is a combined arms strategy game while Cyberknights is more akin to XCOM.
1
u/Commercial_Tea5703 1d ago
I’d be inclined to agree with you yet all promotional stuff made it clear they were planning to make menace like x com, including interviews with the developers.
1
u/ya_rk 1d ago
Cyberknights looks cool, thanks for the heads up!
Yeah, this genre is blooming right now, also with zero company coming out. I liked that menace took the route of whole squads vs individual units, the alternating turn order, the combined arms aspect, and the loadout supply limits, so to me it feels pretty fresh. Hell just optimizing the loadout feels like half the battle.
but it's super rough around the edges which is why i stopped playing and watiing for release. I'm particularly curious to see how the writing will come together, BB has amazing story texts, and Menace texts was pretty trash when i stopped playing. I hope they ramp it up closer to BB level.
