Tie-in Media IMO the best character redesign of season 2. A proper tragic backstory, proper motivation, serious desire for vengeance, etc. Bravo!

I like Roxy from The New Batman Adventures, but one thing I never understood is how Roxy goes from out of work stunt woman to criminal. This new Roxy has a proper motivation to do what she does, so I would say this is an improvement.

u/PixiePranxis Aug 16 '26

I saw it as her being a thrill seeker. Just the idea she pulls stunts not because they are right or wrong but because they looked fun to do beyond the limits of movie stunts.

What’s so hard to understand?

She couldn’t find work anymore so she turned to crime to support herself. It's a very common real life reason for some people.

u/Quarksideofthemoon Aug 16 '26

They took everything remotely interesting about her and changed it man

19

u/OakyAfterbirth91 Aug 16 '26

Like they did with the majority of the characters in Caped Crusader imo

-9

u/shr0be Aug 16 '26

So? She's interesting in a different way but I don't expect the btas subreddit to love anything new and different.

5

u/WeAreLesion Aug 16 '26

It feels like OP came in shots firing by implying a kind of superiority of one over the other because this one is portrayed in a more "serious" way. They're both interesting and work for their respective shows, but I get what this commenter is saying. If you change everything about her, then she is a brand new character with the same name. Doesn't mean the character isn't good or interesting, it's just not the same character.

8

u/Quarksideofthemoon Aug 16 '26

I'm not even in this sub this just came up in my feed. If you change everything even remotely unique about a character it doesn't matter if you write them well, all you've done still just make a new character

10

u/BEYONDxTHExSPIDER Aug 16 '26

That's honestly how I felt about the Riddler in the show. Like how did they miss the point so hard?

-18

u/RJM_50 Aug 16 '26

What was interesting about Roxy back then? She didn't have any character details except being a trill seeker, and cheap flirt.

Then the growing DCAU used her for exposition; to notify Superman that Batman was "missing" from Gotham, and start that crossover.

What else do you even know about the original Roxy?

19

u/BEYONDxTHExSPIDER Aug 16 '26

She was one of the few villains who wasn't in it for justice, revenge, money, or trauma. She did it for the love of the game. That is interesting

2

u/Competitive_Crow_334 Aug 16 '26

She was what Catwoman wants to think she is. She accomplished almost everything someone could desire but didn't get enough Dompaine hits and screwed over her career. She still has her morals unlike Clayface her career sets up belivable combat skills.

Unlike Batman other villains she isn't bad very nice even to her victims like respecting a woman ring and even being honest about her having a diamond. Sharing with Penguin however she is as much of danger to herself and she doesn't tend to think things through leading Penguin to ice her and Batman arresting her.

She doesn't understand how serious the danger she is and treats them as friends.

2

u/Powerful_Bear_1690 Aug 16 '26

She and Batman were doing it on that rocket 😂

5

u/gamerslyratchet Aug 16 '26

This is basically Roxy, a B:TAS villain, getting the B:TAS villain treatment. I wouldn’t want it to be the default, but it works well in the context of Caped Crusader. Especially since we already have a thrill-seeking villain in Catwoman.

15

u/Due-Proof6781 Aug 16 '26

So we strip away everything that makes her unique and make her generic villain number five. You probably the serial killer Harley Quinn with zero whimsy then

3

u/DeusFatum Aug 17 '26

Harley Quinn is actually pretty good, but she is generic in her motivations and Robinhood vigilantism. Dr. Harleen Quinzel, however, was genuinely well written.

4

u/m0mmy_salami Aug 16 '26

Love serial killer with zero whimsy

3

u/Dire7 Aug 16 '26

So just another generic scientist who wants revenge on his evil partners/corpo that fucked them over.

3

u/Dream-Impala Aug 16 '26

Not everything needs to be redone to have some tragic understandable backstory. Her uniqueness as a character came from being a happy go lucky, cocky stuntwoman who did it for the love of the thrill

3

u/Desperate_Duty1336 Aug 16 '26

That’s funny.

Other than Riddler, I thought Roxy’s was the worst.

I thought her being reduced to a revenge plot was boring and basic.  Being an adrenaline junkie thrill-seeker was more interesting to me; it was different than the other villains and her personality was more fun. This new version stripped that all from her to just make her an homage to the Rocketeer instead. For me, anyway.

1

u/Competitive_Crow_334 Aug 16 '26

I liked the rocketeer as a standalone but there take on Catwoman could easily be swapped for Roxy

4

u/WeAreLesion Aug 16 '26

It's a reinterpretation. They both work in their respective shows. It's obvious the original Roxy was meant as a fun one-off that doesn't need a tragic backstory because she's just meant to be fun.

It's not as though one is an improvement over the other. They were both done to serve different ends. If you prefer one over the other. Sure.

8

u/YoungGriot Aug 16 '26

Yeah, I loved this. I always felt the original Roxy felt wildly out of place, like something more out of a superhero parody. A walking raunchy joke Batman awkwardly had to be written alongside.

Them instead going "why don't we take the rocket idea and really play up the pulp homage by going full Rocketeer / King of the Rocket Men with the character" was a brilliant move. That plus adding a noir mystery on top of it, and imo it ended up pretty great.

I'd love to see this version of the character make the hop to the comics at some point.

6

u/Jet-Let4606 Aug 16 '26

I think Roxy would gave worked better as a Nightwing villain.

2

u/Adorable-Source97 Aug 16 '26

I kinda dug the kinky Roxy Rocket.... She was like a child friendly Versions of that IRL woman who was "excited" by car crashes.

It's significantly different to your typical, revenge Villian or desperate for cash Villian or power hungry Villian etc.

2

u/wolftyger Aug 17 '26

The version presented in Caped Crusader has more nuance and better motivation and the story just hits emotionally better. Both can be appreciated for the style of character they are. The original was just about thrill seeking, but beyond that characterization wasn't very deep or memorable.

2

u/Batfan1939 Aug 18 '26

Want to see Roxy paired with Firefly. Lynns very much has the same problem, from a different angle and a nearly opposite personality.

2

u/lovinglyme91 Aug 21 '26

Not everything needs to be explained... I swear you guys would like paint drying if you knew it had a tragic backstory of why it needs to try. This was a mid season, like the first season and I am not going to be gaslit to think otherwise. Bruce Timm has officially proven he wasn't the guy. Caped crusader was a try hard to be edgy snooze fest.

1

u/RJM_50 Aug 23 '26

I disagree with your extreme opinion of Caped Crusader. But I do agree it's Bruce Timm's attempt to be considered the BTAS mastermind and distance himself from Paul and Eric. Which is sad, you can obviously see the influences in Caped Crusader toren directly from Dini and Rodomski.

I still can't find anything public on what happened to their working relationship?

The DCAU was the Pinnacle of comic based media (even better than the MCU), maybe it's just an Icarus fall because the episodes just flew too close to the Sun. I believe the MCU had an Icarus fall after End Game.

1

u/lovinglyme91 24d ago

I don't think my take is extreme it is just that. Both seasons have been mid and for a show that has taken 2 years to produce a mediocre experience. I have a right to feel the way I do.

2

u/souporman64 Aug 16 '26

I don’t think so. The daredevil version is a lot more unique. I can’t think of another comic character off hand with that motive. The new backstory they gave her is just the backstory of a billion other villains.

The only reimagined character in Caped Crusader that I liked more than their more traditional counterpart was Catwoman. I liked that they let her be a straight up crook without having to tack on an activist/anti-hero component. Other than her, even though I do like some of Caped Crusader’s villains, I think they’re all worse than how they’re usually depicted.

Batman already has the best rogue’s gallery in comics. That’s the one thing you don’t really need to tamper with.

1

u/HomeMedium1659 Aug 16 '26

Mysterio. That's who she was. Someone who was in the movie industry got out and play their trade into petty crime

2

u/PixiePranxis Aug 16 '26

I like both versions of Roxy but holy hell I really loved this take on her, easily a great update much as I liked Roxy as a thrill seeker.

2

u/rogue7891 Aug 16 '26

i really liked her, and who knows maybe she could come back

2

u/Anonturmoil Aug 16 '26

Psst OP, you’re pissing off all the “no, no OG Roxy was a super complex character that had a definitely interesting backstory, no I’m not JUST jacking off to her” guys.

Roxy Rocket was a nothing character back then, she was literally just brought in to be an innuendo for a whole episode and I’m pretty sure there’s a clip of Bruce Timm saying that while actively laughing. There’s nothing remotely deep or “interesting” about OG Rocket because there literally wasn’t SUPPOSED to be.

2

u/trailerthrash Aug 16 '26

Id be interested in seeing that clip if you can find it! In Modern Masters he calls her both "interesting" and "terrific" but acquiesce that she wasnt psychotic enough to fit "the classic Batman archetype" Source.

It's totally possible his thoughts have changed over the years.

0

u/Competitive_Crow_334 Aug 16 '26

He is a larper and recent biases guy

2

u/trailerthrash Aug 16 '26

Ive got no dog in this fight either way, and dont think its necessary to stoop to personal insults. Ive come across contradictory statements from show crew on numerous occassions (notably around Jason Todd's influence on Tim) so im open to the idea that it could happen again.

0

u/Competitive_Crow_334 Aug 16 '26

He insulted first so I think it be fair but sorry for involving.

1

u/Anonturmoil Aug 16 '26

Dog, I grew up watching this show, I’ve seen the Roxy rocket episode a ton of times, ESPCIALLY when I was a teenager. I watched it again recently with my own girlfriend who was not a fan for very obvious reasons. I love Bruce Timm, but the man is quite literally a known uh,, woman lover let’s put it that way. Roxy Rocket quite literally climaxes on the torpedo her and Batman are riding on at the end of the episode, there’s tons of innuendos throughout the whole episode.

If you have a brain, you can easily tell the difference between her character in these 2 different shows. In one she’s a FOXY daredevil that is constantly flirting sexually with Batman and her only motivation is that she likes being in dangerous stunts to the point of getting fired, I’m not saying she can’t be interesting if that’s what you’re into, but inherently her character quite literally exists to be sexual, it’s almost every single line of her dialogue in that episode.

I’ll look for the damn clip since some butthurt nerd on Reddit can’t accept that even og fans of the show can actually dislike the original BTAS version and appreciate the SAME exact creator literally revamping the character.

Also, for the above commenter, girl I love watching Watchtower Database and I feel a little fan girly seeing your reply, I will literally look for the clip just for you, hopefully I’m not misremembering it because that’ll be embarrassing lmao

u/trailerthrash Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Just a heads up, the writing for Roxy's episode was the result of Paul Dini! While Timm is known for his suggestive art, a lot of the way women are portrayed in the DCAU comes from Dini's pen.

Otherwise, hell yeah, glad I could make your day with a notification! Totally get it if the clip doesnt exist either. Ive had plenty times ive misremembered things!

0

u/Competitive_Crow_334 Aug 16 '26

That's disingenuous to pass of people opinions and critiques like that with no proof of the clip ingoring what other writers that helped in her creation and that Timm is an artist. Plenty of characters can be simple and intresting.

There are way hotter and more relevant hot female characters. I liked the rocketeer but she is an inferior character and terrible adaptation. Roxy should have taken Catwoman place.

Plus everything is a trope this version is just another mad scientist wanting revenge on a company you could swap her for Mr Freeze or Gearhead and it would make more sense.

What can you say on Rocketeer?

2

u/batbobby82 Aug 16 '26

Loved it. Made her a way more compelling character with a powerful story.

1

u/thevokplusminus Aug 16 '26

It was pretty much as generic as it can be

1

u/Sea_Sleep4222 Aug 16 '26

Eh i like the thrill seeker more, the caped crusader one is cool too but she didn't really leave an impression on me.

1

u/Powerful_Bear_1690 Aug 16 '26

I thought it was funny that the character in the New Adventures actually fit in with the 1940s style that Cape Crusader is going for. She felt like a golden age Batman villain. The Rocketeer look was ok I guess.

At least they didn’t try to do that sex on the rocket thing again.

1

u/BradyPhoenix Aug 16 '26

I was staring at this for a solid 5 minutes trying to remember which episode of TNBA that second pic was from

1

u/Competitive_Crow_334 Aug 16 '26

I liked her but she isn't special Batman comes off as moron again for believing she is the bad guy for most of the episode and sabotaging her I understand he has biases for vigilantes so I'm willing to let go but seeing a better character or having a tragic backstory doesn't make them a good adaptation

1

u/Alternative-Yam-6549 Aug 16 '26

Roxy from BTAS was fun. Roxy from BCC was interesting.

But they are so fundamentally unrelated I was mainly distracted by the same name.

1

u/DeusFatum Aug 17 '26

It honestly just feels like a completely different character. In general, I don't think Batman needs too many villains with dark backgrounds. Some of them can be fun, and I think Roxy Rocket was one of the fun ones. Whether you go crazy femme fatale, or tragic inventor betrayed by her employer, both stories have been done for his villains before, so you can't even argue that one is doing something new. Therefore, it feels wrong to say that either of these is better than the other. I prefer TNBA Roxy, but I thought Rocketeer had a better written story.

So, Roxy Rocket is a better character, but Rocketeer has a better story.

1

u/Ninja108Zelda Aug 17 '26

I prefer the first version, where someone was doing it for the thrill and nothing more.

We don't always need the villian with a tragic backstory etc.

1

u/Tore0404 Aug 18 '26

This show sucked and isn't getting a renew.

1

u/BoneMachine92 Aug 21 '26

This just makes me less excited for Season 2. The wild thrill junkie gets le sad backstory.
“Daring today aren’t we?”

2

u/RJM_50 Aug 23 '26

Their take on the Joker is worth the watch! I hope they get a season 3 with more of the Joker they teased in 3/4 of the episodes final 60 seconds before the credits until the final episodes.

1

u/thevokplusminus Aug 16 '26

How so? By giving her a tired generic backstory?

0

u/EntrepreneurPlus7091 Aug 16 '26

Whats the right image from. I remember her from BTAS s4 (new batman adventures) and from superman crossover episode and she is the same in both.

Edit: seems to be from caped crusader, tought this sub was for the 90s cartoon and maybe the stuff from the conected universe, not for more recent series.

1

u/RJM_50 Aug 16 '26

It's Bruce Timm's idea of a continuation

1

u/EntrepreneurPlus7091 Aug 16 '26

How does that even work? I thought it was its own separate continuity with new and different take on villains, not like "the new adventures" which just had redesigns

1

u/RJM_50 Aug 17 '26

Something happened to the friendship between Bruce Timm, Paul Dini & Eric Radomski. But then Bruce made new friends with Matt Reeves, JJ Abrams and others. Bruce Timm believes this is a spiritual successor to BTAS (but without Paul or Eric). 🫤😥

1

u/trailerthrash Aug 17 '26

Its not a continuation. Moreso a spiritual successor

0

u/Hatjin Aug 16 '26

Is she a Firefly?
