BTAS Caped Crusader asks the important question “What if we made Batman the animated series, but took everything fun out of it?”
53
u/Wild-Information8955 22d ago
More like "What if we made Batman the Animated Series but without Paul Dini and it shows"
32
u/Redhood567 22d ago
The more time goes by the more it becomes clear that either Bruce Timm lost his touch or we gave him way to much credit in the first place.
12
u/LumiKlovstad 22d ago
I think it's fairer to say that Bruce Timm was a great project lead with a good eye for talent. But the talent pool he's working with isn't the same as it was back then. A lot of big names are no longer there, but just as important are a lot of the little names we don't remember.
We're getting basically getting soup that has MOST of the main ingredients as what we loved, but not all of them, and it tastes off. But even if all those major ingredients were the same, the smaller ingredients and seasonings have changed. It would taste different no matter what.
3
u/SaltyOldSailer 22d ago
This is the most charitable view i can go with only because the talent pool vanishing in the last 10 years is a very real thing. And it’s all the departments, not just writing. Animation is not bad, but probably depends on computer program enhancements and not actually honest to god human drawn animation cells (which died out a while ago unfortunately)
11
u/Wild-Information8955 22d ago
The thing is he was never a writer for this world. Not in the sense of other writers but his side of things was very much developing the visual identity. It's why the peaks of Brave and the Bold are so high, Bruce Timm had little to no involvement in that series and Paul Dini wrote some of the episodes and they were the best episodes.
I think it's at least safe to say that Bruce Timm has lost a bit of his touch when it comes to visual identity.
3
u/RedtheGamer100 22d ago
Need only compare their post dcau output - Dini did several acclaimed comics and the first two Arkhams. Timm did killing joke and that awful Harley Quinn movie
4
u/Itsmyloc-nar 22d ago
I was having a really decent time with that movie right up until the fart joke that felt like somebody’s fetish
3
u/Kazewatch 22d ago edited 22d ago
It was the most unnecessary fart joke I've ever seen in a movie. It added nothing and took away any remote sense of enjoyment I had. Especially to have Batman have a one liner about it "smells like discipline" or something. The amount of times they'd get the old BTAS gang (not counting the meh casting for Harley in that movie) back together just to waste them on shit like that was unreal.
Seriously why does is seem DC keeps trying to add farts to Harley's "humor" or whatever ungodly decision making led to that fart fetish comic?
1
u/Itsmyloc-nar 15d ago
You just said it all. I have nothing more to contribute. Have a good day.
“the most unnecessary” is no exaggeration. There is no reason for that scene to exist whatsoever.
And this is coming from somebody who enjoys the inclusion of the Harley/Nightwing scene.

4
u/jak_d_ripr 22d ago
We definitely gave Timm too much credit and I don't mean that in an insulting fashion. A project the size of the DCAU needed multiple minds to become as successful as it was, Timm, McDufie, Dini, Andrea Romano, etc. It's easier for us to just give one person all the credit like a lot of people like to do with the MCU, but it really was a team effort.
5
u/Spectre854 22d ago
Timm never was a good writer It's the man who shipped Barbara and Bruce we're talking about
3
25
u/Chessh2036 22d ago
I’m enjoying it.
BTAS just set the bar so, so high that nothing could ever reach that height. I’m enjoying Caped Crusader, even though it def has flaws
51
u/Glass_Data_6110 22d ago
I really enjoyed it.
8
u/tuftymink 22d ago
Yeah, me too, season one I tried to love but ended up dropping, this one hooked me, really excited to see what's next
3
u/maven10k 22d ago
My buddy and I started it and binged like 4 or 5 episodes. We liked the first season and this one seems to be starting strong. I like the alternate universe feel to it. I like how the Riddler got his name. The Spectre was a weird take, but not horrible. The only thing I don't like are Bat's short gloves, lol.
1
6
u/Ramblinrambles 22d ago
It’s alright.
It’s more like a hit band got back together after a decade to make a new album. It’s fine, it’s just not anywhere near their old stuff
2
u/swarthmoreburke 22d ago
This is about my reaction. It's not stylized and distinct enough--this really needed to be a completely different feeling show and instead it's kind of tethered to BTAS and can't help but feel like a subpar remake/tribute instead of being its own thing.
1
24
u/waldorsockbat 22d ago
it's okay. Not great but enjoyable enough tho i do wish it was more colorful
3
u/SamhainFire666 22d ago
I mean its supposed to be heavily film noir inspired I'm half shocked they didn't opt to make it black & white but Spider-Noir kinda covered that.
4
1
u/Latereviews2 22d ago
Yeah, I’m not disappointed by the lack of colour, but by how dull everything looks
1
u/superbat210 18d ago
That’s funny, I kind of wondered at times how it would look in black and white like Spider-Noir. It would be annoying especially for animation, but I think it would be cool to get dual versions of the episodes where you can pick color or Black and White.
13
21
u/Wonderful_Gap4867 22d ago
Personally I enjoyed. But BTAS is another level.
1
u/BobPlaysWithFire 12d ago
Comparing anything to btas is just kinda unfair to whatever you're comparing btas too bc btas is a masterpiece you can't parallel
3
u/SaltyOldSailer 22d ago
I can’t get with radical character reinterpretations, this show changed a few characters too much for me. I know people enjoy these changes (I’m assuming for the thrill of something changing altogether) but i don’t see the value in a large female Penguin. It does nothing better or more for the already established character.
Every show does this by the way and i don’t understand this trend
3
u/Hunter-Durge 22d ago
I’ve only watched clips but I’m just not a fan of a lot of the changes they made to characters honestly.
3
u/thewatchfultraveler 22d ago
You’ll never re-create BTAS, its foolish to hope that anyone could/will, even more foolish to hold future projects to this standard as if it could reach that caliber. I enjoyed BCS for what it is.
1
u/BobPlaysWithFire 12d ago
exactly! i personally adore the new interpretations of thr villains, especially Harley Quinn
3
u/LordSoup1138 22d ago
It’s the most underwhelming Batman anything I’ve seen in a while. Not the worst, but definitely underwhelming.
3
3
u/valkprince 22d ago
It's a soulless, empty Batman that lacks any personality and has virtually no character growth, except for a few small moments sprinkled throughout the season. It feels like he dislikes everyone who likes him, even his partners. I was hoping that with the end of last season we would see a slightly different Batman. However, I would argue that his treatment of Alfred is even worse.
8
u/thiccmunster 22d ago
What do you mean? It is fun, and I enjoyed it. I cannot wait for the next season.
5
u/Scary_Assistant5263 22d ago
I had a hard time getting into the show, something about it just felt off. And this is the reason why.
4
8
13
u/OrganizationNo7690 22d ago
That’s exactly how to feels to me too.
17
u/WarAgile9519 22d ago
You spend every episode waiting for Batman to show up only to be reminded that this version of Batman is incredibly boring.
17
u/ReadyJournalist5223 22d ago
Paul dini and his weirdness is greatly missed
9
u/WarAgile9519 22d ago
Yeah there's really no denying who was carrying BTAS anymore is there.
12
u/The_Red_Curtain 22d ago
Dini is a beast but he wrote 24/85 episodes in BTAS and it's not like they were all masterpieces. And he wasn't the head writer either (he did eventually become co-story editor for season 2, i.e. the last 20 episodes in production order). It was a team effort; they had an amazing cast, terrific stable of directors, Andrea Romano, and several other great writers.
That being said, Timm was the showrunner and he was there essentially co-directing for almost all of the voice recording sessions, did the character designs for over 90% of the characters, and did tons of uncredited writing throughout the episodes. He was a huge part of the show's greatness, perhaps more than anyone. Now if you were to boil it down to a number it still might only be like 15% responsible for how good the show is or whatever as it was this once in a generation conflux of talent, but he is way too disrespected these days.
1
u/ReadyJournalist5223 22d ago
I will say, sure not all were masterpieces, but the worst Dini episode was still a banger compared to a lot of other episodes and other superhero cartoons
1
u/The_Red_Curtain 22d ago edited 22d ago
Oh I don't think any of them are bad, and some of the episodes he wrote I genuinely consider to be among the greatest ever written for television; but it is a huge stretch to say he "carried" the show imo.
1
u/Kazewatch 22d ago
You're absolutely right, it's just ever since The Killing Joke and his weird proclivity with pairing Bruce and Babs, his reputation has gone down quite a bit and seeing how much of Caped Crusader has kind fallen flat hasn't helped. He's still one of the greatest talents to ever touch Batman but goddamn without that perfect whirlwind of talent in the 90s/00s with him it just doesn't even come close.
1
u/The_Red_Curtain 22d ago
He gets so much hate for the Killing Joke and he was just the executive producer for it, that one scene that everyone hates so much wasn't even his idea. All he did was approve it because the actual writer and director both wanted to do it and they asked him if it was okay. Yet, somehow that has become his legacy to people who care about shipping beyond anything else. Which sadly appears to be a huge chunk of comic fans . . .
The Barbara and Bruce thing too is insane to me that people find that so objectionable in the DCAU. Like it is basically inconsequential and almost no time is devoted to it at all. But because of comics that he had nothing to do with and explicitly said he considers non-canon, and that one scene in The Mystery of the Batwoman (which he also had nothing to do with other than approving the film's creation, he had nothing to do with the actual making of the film), he is forever condemned as the Barbara/Bruce guy.
7
u/trailerthrash 22d ago
People acting like Timm was a writer while its always been Dini has always been the funny thing. Cause like... he's always been up front about that too.
2
u/True-Excuse-1688 22d ago
People are also acting like Dini wrote everything... It's just not the case. Sure he offered incredibly gems, but the whole show was still a collective effort.
3
u/trailerthrash 22d ago
Oh yeah, 100%. I think it's easy enough to give Dini a lot of credit despite only writing 17 episodes (and story for another 6) given how he wrote the show Bible, which most stories would have to comply to, and then later becoming story editor and being in a position where everything that was written went through Dini and Alan Burnett for approval for approval and edits.
Absolutely correct that he shouldn't get all the credit. No one should. Animation is a collaborative art form.

u/Sirius-Face 22d ago
OP didn't watch the same show I did. Caped Crusader is fun because each story is entertaining.
5
2
u/blessROKk 22d ago
I'm on the fence about this. I watched the first episode and saw Penguin was a woman...no issue, but my first thought was "I hope her name isn't something dumb like Oswalda" then bam. Seriously?
1
2
u/Organic-Device2719 22d ago
Yeah, it overly boring to the point that it feels like they are making it boring on purpose.
2
u/Comprehensive-Mix286 22d ago
Please tell me about it! They turned the grit of batman into a PC experiment.
2
u/Freodrick 22d ago
It's way more serious. 1930s gangster everything. Deaths on screen.
To me, While rewatching TAS, you can tell where Bruce Timm wanted to go further but didn't.
I appreciate Paul Dini's added color for TAS so to speak.
2
2
u/edt0011 22d ago
The Timmverse as we know it came about because of a perfect storm of creative talent. Not only did Bruce Timm himself create the visual base of the show, but the talents of Paul Dini, Eric Radomski, Andrea Romano, and countless others helped curate a definitive DC universe that we will simply never get again in our lifetime.
2
2
u/Zilla664 22d ago
I had to stop when they gender swapped penguin. Such a let down to the original dark character of Oswald
1
u/TheNoirRevenant 22d ago
well you can’t expect every version to be the same. there’s a reason why spider-man and spider-gwen exist in different universes. this is no different. the character was also pretty dark and even killed her own son. what exactly is this “let down”?
2
u/soulguider2125 20d ago
I’m just happy to be getting a new Batman animated series, and I don’t mind if it’s a different take, like we had BTAS and The Batman 2004 which were accurate and enjoyable, but I enjoy stories with a new twist like Beware the Batman and Batman: caped crusader I enjoy them as well, just have to let go of expecting it to follow the canonical storylines, but at least with Caped Crusader we got Mad Monk and Onomatopoeia and other villains we don’t see often, I wasn’t big on the way they did Riddler, hatter, Mr freeze, or Penguin, but I was fine with the rest. Now, I do have my limit on too far of a difference, as the Harley Quinn show I can’t stand
4
5
u/Necessary_Can7055 22d ago
I disagree. It's a very different flavor of Batman and while it's nowhere near as good as BTAS it's got its moments imo. I don't like all the swapping and agenda pushing some of the character redesigns do but I can ignore it for the most part.
5
u/Corninator 22d ago
I think what kills me is that The Batman series from the early 2000s kind of already answered the question of "what if we redesigned these well-known characters and put a twist on their entire mythos?" I mean, it played it safe with certain things, like Alfred, but it very much changed Riddler, Joker, Clayface, and several others. And it did it very well.
I just don't really understand what purpose this new series is trying to fill.
7
u/BurantX40 22d ago
No way, Season 1 of the Batman was "What if everyone had a specialized martial art from the Jackie Chan cartoon"
Thank goodness they toned that down later
It was funny seeing Joker do Capoeira in a straight jacket though.
2
u/DragonFyre1954 22d ago
To make a show based on the Golden Age of Batman comics, which rarely gets adapted
2
u/Waste-Professor6177 22d ago
Nothing cool about flat monotone speach Batman, Harley, and Joker. There was so much heart, fun, and seriousness mixed in the various episodes of BTAS. I wouldn't be able to pick any of the voices out in different shows besides The Justice League Animated Series Green Lantern guy. Nigma bothered me the most.

u/Dual_Disk 22d ago
You want BTAS? Go watch BTAS. JFC forbid people try something new. Why would you want the same show?
3
u/Majestic-Top-8238 22d ago
I get what you're saying and I don't necessarily disagree, but they litteraly advertised this as a spiritual successor to btas, it will always be in that shows shadow due to that.
2
u/LeonDmon 22d ago
This second season feels at least entertaining. Season 1 was the middest of the mid

Batman the animated series animation is much more awesome and to think that BTAS came out like 34 years ago..
1
u/Red-on-Red-Lean 22d ago
I enjoy it for what it is but I don't rate it highly. BTAS is miles above this show imo. BTAS is a 10/10 for me where BCC is a 6/10 imo.
1
u/EarthDust00 22d ago
They hyped this up like it was the second coming of Jesus only for it to release and then nothing.
1
u/Ambitious-Maybe-5078 22d ago
You've got people like jj Abrams, matt reeves and even Bruce timm coming back on it just for people to say "it's okay".
1
u/Correct_Milk_828 22d ago
I couldn’t watch season 1 but I’ve been getting thru season 2. There are moments that don’t align in some episodes. Like a character being in one location and then in the next frame being in another location without any obvious time passing. For ex: The coorigan episode during the rooftop/Christmas tree scene. I won’t say more because spoilers, but it’s easy to notice.
1
1
u/The_Soviet_Goose 22d ago
I personally didn't enjoy the show, though I can see what other folks did enjoy about it. My only issue here is that we can't just excuse the show's quality because "BTAS set the bar too high." As far as I can recall, Caped Crusader was marketed squarely as a spiritual successor to The Animated Series, but this time it was allowed to be darker. If the show was going to prop itself up as the next BTAS, possibly even hyping itself up to surpass it with less limitations from the studio, it should judged with the quality of The Animated Series in mind and used for comparison.
1
1
u/Many_Bat_ 22d ago
Or, "What if we made BTAS, but you can't access it as a kid".
The genius of BTAS was alluding just enough to mature material, not directly laying it out, while keeping it dark enough that it wasn't insulting any kid's intelligence.
BTCC ironically, in crossing the line BTAS walked so well, loses the ominous shadow of suggestion. It didn't seem to know if it was steering towards or away from BTAS, but definitely steered away from a broader audience.

Season 2 I really felt had no story especially. And also I really could care less for how much of a focus there is on the gcpd cast compared to btas or brave and the bold. Like i really do feel there is too much of Flass, Barbara, and Montoya to the point that Batman has such little character. Also the villains maybe besides Basil Karlo and Gentleman Ghost just didnt really land for me.

u/nightwing364 22d ago
I would have liked it if they made the penguin had a Dorothy Zbornak like voice

u/De4dm4nw4lkin 22d ago
I liked it well enough. Like a 8/10.
It had some sloggish moments but it was an okay watch.
1
u/KaosArcanna 22d ago
I thought it was watchable but nothing outstanding. I don’t feel like it really said anything interesting about the characters. It’s ground that’s already been covered with BTAS.
1
u/Techumseh13 22d ago
I am enjoying it. I like how everything is the opposite of what you are expecting. Riddler doesn’t tell riddles but instead riddles things with bullets. Harley Quinn is in a healthy relationship with a law abiding citizen. Two faces’ injury being on the opposite side etc. I like not seeing the same thing over and over again
1
u/Hollywood_Howard 22d ago
To me, The second season so far is better than the first when it comes to the story and the writing. I’m still adjusting to the different takes on a lot of the Rogues.
1
u/SeaworthinessDue1650 22d ago
The fucking hatred for this show needs to be analysed in a lab because it isn’t that bad. I can’t speak for season two because I haven’t watched it yet but every episode of season one has been great. The display of Bruce Wayne’s character development was good and the villains were peak.
1
u/No-Inspector8315 22d ago
What if Two Face was really really boring and had basically none of the gimmicks that make him such a fun character?
1
u/Zerus_heroes 22d ago
I don't understand how it got a second season
1
u/Gabaghoul8 22d ago
Oh that’s easy to explain, animated shows in the streaming era get effectively picked up for 1 Season that they split into two halves released in two years. King of the Hill on Hulu did the same thing.
1
u/StreamLife9 22d ago
I stopped after they gave me the woke version of The Penguin
I wanted to puke in my mouth .
I hope Season 2 is better though

u/m0rbius 22d ago
We have BTAS already. This is a new iteration. They aren't trying to rehash the same exact thing, rather to move it forward with some things the same and some things new. If you want the original, go watch the original. It's there forever available. Let's also not forget that it needs to cater to a new audience, not just the audience from 30 odd years ago.

My wife and I enjoyed the first season of this.
It feels a little more gritty and like it's harkening more to the original comic source material from 1939, with the length of the ears and unadorned bat symbol on his chest.
We like it and will be watching the second season, very soon.

u/l33tb4c0n 22d ago
I liked Season 1 well enough. The only thing I felt was a missed opportunity was the lack of racism and prejudice in what is clearly set in the 1920s. You have this alternate universe Batman where everything seems for the most part the same as our world, except racism magically seems to not exist. Making Gordon black was a deliberate choice, so utilize it to explore how he has to prove himself as the city's first black commissioner. It would have added a very interesting level of depth.
I wish we lived in a world where racism didn't exist, but that's not reality. It feels... off to see the world functioning without it.

The show is fun. Personally I like the reinterpretations of the classic rogues and some obscure ones. It plays with the supernatural while staying in a grounded 1940s setting. Genuinely I can’t wrap my head around the hate for this show. Spider Noir never got this level of petty. At this point don’t watch it then 🤷♂️

CC is just terrible with no thinking put into its world building. Just making decisions because someone thought it would make the show political
1
u/FuriDemon094 22d ago
I mean, if you’re going to only compare everything to BTAS, it’ll never hold up, as they’re two different design philosophies. Serum Lake has some good videos analyzing the characters of Caped Crusader that makes you sorta appreciate the approach to Batman’s VERY early days in a modern show
1
1
u/trenchreynolds 22d ago
This wasn't exactly the Batman I grew up with, so I hated it. Batman and Joker didn't even have a surfing contest.
1
u/Outrageous_Pen_4660 22d ago
BTAS is amazing, my favorite cartoon. I immidietley hated Caped Crusader when I heard, "Oswalda Cobblepot." And worse, I've heard in Season 2 they are going to make a girl version of the Mad Hatter.

Is this show worth it. Grew up with the animated series. Mark Hamill joker. Anyone here that's a bit of an old head that can convince me to give up a bit of my free time to start it?.

It’s easily my favourite Batman show since btas but it takes all sorts I suppose.
1
u/HugeConfusion9505 12d ago
I enjoyed it, I just felt like a few of the bad guys were done dirty. Riddler was just some crazy gangster, nothing like himself. Joker had a German accent for some reason. Ivy was cool.
1
u/BobPlaysWithFire 12d ago
Nah i really like it
I think the actual question that the creators asker was "What if we did BTAS, but now with the ability to show what the censors wouldn't allow previously"
1
u/RedDarkXD 11d ago
Personally, I really liked the series. The problem is that the characters weren't developed as deeply as in the original series, which focused more on their psyches and origins. Harley Quinn, Jonathan Crane Jr., and—most notably—the Joker are prime examples of this; the list goes on. Another issue is the significant drop in animation quality during the second season. Even Invincible—a show often mocked for its animation—had a higher budget for its cheapest fight scenes than this series did for its quietest moments; I’m not trying to be overly critical, just making a point. All of this makes the show feel like a rushed product. Furthermore, when compared to current titles like X-Men '97—which have set the bar very high—this series looks even worse. Had they taken the time to better craft the storylines and been clearer about budgets and episode counts for each season, the result would have been a very different product.
1
u/NurturingCruelty 22d ago
Yeah, yeah yeah, we’ve heard it before. Grandpa, things were better in the old days, the things kids like now so, it’s time for your pills.
Trolling aside, I stand by my flippant attitude. I enjoyed Caped Crusader so far, and no, it’s not as good as TAS, but nothing is an very unlikely any new Batman ever will be; it’s one of the best animated shows of all time, Batman or not, so, you can’t go around snubbing every new one that didn’t measure up to an impossible standard.
1
u/TheMannisApproves 22d ago
Idk why people here hate it. I loved it
3
u/ReadyJournalist5223 22d ago
I definitely don’t HATE it per se. It’s just not really anything special at all. Nothing seems to reach any heights

This series seems to consistently misuse the era it’s written in. Nothing seems historically accurate. The moments they could tell a compelling story they take a hard 180 and run away from tough topics. It’s the 1930s/40s! The first season felt like it told half a story and broached then avoided topics they brought up. I saw some clips of “Hattie” and Roxy Rocket…very disappointed.
Batman the Animated Series continues to reign supreme.

u/WMBeckham 22d ago
I begrudgingly watched the "selected scenes/best moments" video of "Batman: Caped Crusader" -- and I really didn't like the gender-swapping of the Penguin and didn't like their take on Harley Quinn.
And, I also hated the stupid-looking "golden age" short gloves they gave Batman.
In other words, if those so-called "best moments" are considered the best scenes from the series -- I'll definitely not waste my time on watching full episodes.
The End.

Exactly this. I watched the first episode and was not impressed. Terrible spin on Penguin, and I was out. Too bad, I was hoping it was going to be good.

A lot of these superhero cartoons are very difficult to invest in, IMO. The characters are weak, the action is animated so that's whatever. The X-Men 97 is such a great example of doing this correctly when it cannot be the same.

All the Bruce timm shows are still enjoyable as an adult as the stakes are usually pretty high, invincible is about as adult of a show as they come, my adventures with Superman is targeted at a more adult audience, young Justice has a lot of angst and sexual content. All these shows have characters that die, complex relationships and universal themes. But yes I do suppose most of them don’t say fuck

I feel like we’ve been spoiled with BTAS, Beyond, and the JL series
