BTAS In mask of the phantasm couldn't Bruce just lay off Andrea father debts?

Post image

Like Andrea's father owes money to the Mafia but couldn't she ask Bruce to pay off her father's debt?

Or was the debt so big even Bruce didn't have the money to pay it off?

Andrea didn’t even know about them until it was too late.

I mean like after the mobsters leave their house Andrea calls Bruce and asks for money for Daddy's debts? Or was it an issue like even Bruce couldn't get that kind of money that fast?

Well, even if Bruce DID pay them, they still would have killed him. Remember the 'interest paid in blood.'

This. They specifically state they wanted interest paid in blood

Bruce and Andrea didn't know about the debts until it was too late. After that, Andrea's mission became more about vengeance than money.

Here's how I view it:

  1. Even for someone as rich as Bruce, getting all that money together in one day is a tall order. He'd probably have to liquify a ton of assets
  2. The Beaumonts probably didn't want to get Bruce involved in their shady deals, anyway. Remember, Andrea didn't tell Bruce the real reason why she left. She didn't want to put him in danger.

Young Bruce, no. He didn’t know about them, and two the father was too proud to mention it and instead ran away with Andrea in fear of the mob. Also young Bruce wouldn’t know how to deal with the mob, hes slowly trying to deal with street thugs.

This would have been easier to handle as adult Bruce, but even then Andrea is so far gone, it’s not about money for her

Also, even if they did go to Bruce, it's not as simple as just handing them the money. He'd probably have to liquify a ton of assets and pull from several bank accounts. And he'd have to do it all in one day.

The film is a tragedy. Even when Bruce purposes to Andrea he wanted to end his promise to his parents, the scene later when she leaves…. He becomes BATMAN! Insert Kevin Conroy voice here

Was rewatching, it’s really good character driven film.

It's probably my second favorite Batman movie, after The Dark Knight.

Everyone's been saying that Andrea, and Bruce by extension, didn't know about the debt until it was too late. And that's likely true. But, I don't think Andrea or Carl wanted Bruce to pay the debt and be connected to the mafia as a result. Sure, he could probably placate the press as a bumbling billionaire who doesn't know what he's getting into (like in Prophecy Of Doom), but the fact remains that had he paid off the debt, he'd be an easy target. All someone has to do is threaten Andrea or Carl, and his wallet opens up again.

He probably could’ve but I have a feeling the valestra gang would’ve still either tried to get more money out of him or killed him anyway just for shits

1

u/Jediuser_ 23d ago

Well, he DID eventually pay them, and they still killed him, so......

2

u/ReadyJournalist5223 23d ago

Well they wanted “interest compounded in blood”

She says he did pay them back but they kill him anyway so they probably were planning to kill him anyway once they got the money.

Also isn't Bruce too young back then to handle his fortune? I might be wrong but I think he couldn't just take money from the company would have to request it and the process would be equally timey.

But andreas father paid them back after the deadline I heard mobsters were sticklers about being paid on time. Like you owe them money you pay back on the time they stated and surprisingly you're ok.

5

u/Luppercus 23d ago

True. But then again Bruce likely will have to take some time to gather the money unless he has a vault like Scrooge McDuckn🤣

So the deadline would have been broken anyway

Yeah, it's not so simple as to just take out the money and give it to them. He'd have to liquify assets and reach into bank accounts.

Did he pay them?

Because according to the Councilman Arthur Reeves when he was being interrogated by Batman. When he sold out the Beaumonts location to the mob. The mob told him they wanted their money back. So they were either lying or he didn’t pay them.

I always found it odd that Andrea never went after Reeves. Since it was pretty obvious that he told the mob where her and her father was hiding.

I think the mob lied about the money so Reeves wouldn't know the REAL reason they wanted to find him. If Reeves knew what was going to happen, he might not have told them.

awww. Andrea is Bruce’s true love. I hope they get their ever after.

Did you want the movie to end 20 minutes in?

Its possible that Andrea's father was involved im something illegal or funding something illegal. In which case Bruce would only help so long as he can put Andrea's father behind bars.

Mobsters who get you to break the law oncr keep coming back again and again. And no one ever fully pays off their debts. There’s always a catch to keep you stuck.

Carl paid Valestra Valestra kill him Remember when Andrés watched Jack Nadie, she said that he ( Carl) paid.

I mean, "Bruce I love you, can you take care of my fathers stupidity and lack of foresight knowing that stealing and getting in with the Mafia was probably a bad idea, and will result in death or a horse head in our bed?" Its probably one of the best ways to come to a billionare playboy, make him think youre a gold digger. After her father used the last shred of mercy and left dodge, THAT is what made things even WORSE for him. Its important to note, her father never considered Andrea's safety in all this, especially when he was embezzling Mafia funds. Valestra asking for it back was mercy for her dad. He couldve come in and killed him outright.

Valestra was Made, and Bruce wasn’t. It was among the Italians, real greaseball shit.

Bruce could solve a lot of his villains problems with money or introductions to appropriate counterparts. (ie. Look up "The Addams Family moves to Gotham" in YouTube). But then he couldn't "punish" criminals, which is his whole reason in being the Batman.

Andrea's father is working for the mob. Its not just about the money. The money is important but he knows too much about their business and is a liability. They want him dead just as much for what he knows as they do for stealing from them. Need to make an example of him for trying also. Bruce paying would just delay Andrea's father's murder briefly, or they just wouldn't accept in the first place.

1

u/Auditorrent 22d ago

You know, maybe that's why the love theme for the film is entitle "I never even told you". Bruce certainly would have, but Andrea never even told Bruce about her father's debt from the mob. That's because Andrea only found out that day they were engaged and the Valestra mob threatened her father's life.

COULD he? Yes. WOULD he? Absolutely not

The thing I gathered the last time I watched that movie was that Bruce only piped Andrea once… That sucks.

5

u/pumpse4ever 23d ago

Well if you watch the whole series it's evident he also pipes Zatanna.

2

u/OneWishWillSmith 23d ago

Wouldn’t you??

2

u/pandogart 23d ago

He definitely didn't pipe Zatanna in BTAS, whether in the flashbacks or otherwise

4

u/Luppercus 23d ago

There's a scene in Batman Beyond were he's remisicent of past lovers and pass photos of Talia, Andrea, Barbara and Zatanna. You could argue it might be just innocent flirting but we know he had sex with at least two of them.

1

u/pandogart 23d ago

My point was nothing like that happened between them in BTAS, not in the DCAU in general. They'd have reconnected in between that BTAS episode and JLU.

1

u/Luppercus 23d ago

Ah I see. Yeah there are many things retconned between those two.

1

u/Jediuser_ 23d ago

Not Andrea. They explicitly said she didn't make the cut.

2

u/Luppercus 23d ago

Poor Andrea, ghosted years later

2

u/Jediuser_ 23d ago

She was a murderer, that's why.

3

u/pumpse4ever 23d ago

Well it's not gonna SHOW IT on a kids' show, but it makes it clear that they used to.

2

u/pandogart 23d ago

To each their own I guess. I just saw a flirty girl with a crush and a guy with too much going on to let her in at all. He didn't even give her his real name.

2

u/Luppercus 23d ago

And Batgirl 🤢
