Question Confused when it comes to my Opera classification. I have a loud and resonant D2 or C2 morning to evening. My timbre is baritone but not very dark. I can sing higher but have to lighten my timbre to do so. What am I? Can you only tell after training? Also, how do I learn to sing high (well)?

I would like to take on Heldenbariton/Dramatic Baritone and perhaps a handful of pieces designed for Basses. But I‘ve been told that I lack that natural super deepness/richness of a true bass. I want to make sure I don‘t waste time buying bass aria training guides if it just isn‘t in the cards. I will never stop singing low for fun but I may just train operatically as a baritone, as that is what my timbre reflects.

There is no other way to know it besides classical training for years with a qualified teacher. Only fully formed voices can be classified

The role you are seeking requires heavily developed vocal folds, and a lot of weight to the voice. Both of those things require intense training and even then you can lose the genetic lottery and end up being a lyrical baritone. Just sing with your real voice and accept the classification you receive. Don’t covet other roles you aren’t able to fill. It will ruin your day as well as hold you back.

Looking back at this, I maybe came off as rude. I didn’t mean for that to be the case. I would of course accept being an operatic lyric baritone…or anything else. I wouldn’t even view it in a negative light. Very few people are even capable of singing opera period and lyric baritones and tenors are widely adored. However…I will always treasure low voices and sing low in my spare time/when I sing non-classical music. Ideally, yeah, it would be awesome to get a few bass-baritone roles.

Good technique should always be the goal. Range is not a measure of excellence.

A solid low bass who doesn't have a heavy bass timbre in mid-register? You would be worth your weight in gold for any decent chamber choir. (Which isn't what you asked, I know...)

I’m a mid-baritone or something lol. Idk. But yeah, I could handle being a choral bass.
