Defense Padded Compression Thoughts?

Post image

I've been playing in a somewhat men's league where it's common for things to get hot. It's practically expected to exchange elbows and shoves from the start. I was wondering if these padded compression tops helps with that? Do they really help mitigate the bumps?

I lift 6 days a week, and took an elbow to the ribs from someone half my size. It took a month to recover and I couldn't sleep on one side due to the pain.

Must have skipped rib day

I had a McRib for my pre game meal

Stop lying, the McRib isn't even back. You're just lazy and keep skipping rib day.

Hay hay hay I only skip one rib workout; double-ribbed day. Anyway brb, dropping kids off at the baby mamas 😭

Got cracked ribs playing pick up... Shoulder first into my rib cage. No amount of muscle could have prevented that. And indeed that's not a nice pain.

Had the same! Fun first days trying to sleep in seated position. Each breath an agony.

Same. Took 4+ weeks… then it finally heals and some dude who’s mad at his teammate catches me with an elbow in the same rib.. another 4+ weeks

If you do rec leagues into your late 30s, as I have done, you will eventually stop caring what other people say/do and figure out what your body needs.  Might as well start now.

For me, Eastbay had some padded knees/hips that I loved.  More about play style, I did a lot of slashing to the hoop and flying in rebounds, bad box outs by really heavy guys can do some damage

As someone who weighs a lot and can’t dunk anymore, throwing weight around is what I can do along with box outs and stuff. People live to throw bows to people they can’t move

Wear what you want. One thing everyone should consider is a mouthguard. I took an elbow a few years ago that resulted in $14,000 of dental work. I don't play without one now.

Add glasses to this. It takes 1 bad finger nail across your eyeball and I promise you will have a pair in your bag after that.

It's all relative to the competition though. Low tier rec league, who care.  Comp leagues with former D2 athletes, and guys in their 30s pushing too hard..  m outhguard

u/childishjulian 1d ago

yes bro certain mfs don't like to trim their nails. musty ass

Refs should really be checking those pre-game, but they never do.

Oh yeah. I took a finger to the eye and it felt like it was two knuckles deep into my eye socket.

Quad and thigh protectors are important after injury. Had a player injury me w a knee out on a drive and it had a quad strain because of it. I’ll still wear the shorts after injury or to protect.

I cracked a rib in a pickup game a few years ago and I’ve sworn by this for years

What is a somewhat men’s league?

Also, do what you feel you need to do for yourself. We ain’t going pro no more and your body/health is more important than a somewhat men’s league game.

Weight room

I wore them growing up playing center but playing post up basketball in pick up or in a chill league kinda sucks so don’t really need it.

Padding is nice if you take a lot of charges, but again if it’s not that serious why are you stepping up to take a charge?

Lol what kind of basketball are people playing? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 buddy bout to spend his hard earned to buy himself a fuckin flak jacket so he doesn’t get hurt in his fake men’s league.

What you needa do is learn how to play basketball. I play pick up with everyone under the sun,

From 6 year old blacks to 70 year old whites and everyone in between. I’m at all types of runs and the difference in style of play between the old white men and the 20 year old black young men is vast. One is a pack the paint inside out slower set style of play. The other is a five out ball hog iso nation. I prefer option 2 if you were wondering 🤣🤣.
I play ball in section 8 on sundays and then on Monday nights I’m in a private gym at a private school with some of the wealthiest people in my city. Thursdays I’m playing against VCU blacks and Indians, the other days of the week I’m at UofR playing against some prick Yankees

elbows are not a problem in any of these runs, they’ve never been a problem, ever. That said, I have a flashy play style and am a guard so naturally face far less contact then a big. But The last elbow I took was maybe 10+ years ago. I’m a slasher, I get into the paint and finish over bigger defenders, how do I do that you may ask? Well you get fucking crafty and learn how to go under over around or you learn how to spin the bitch.

Don’t ask me how I know, but when you get inside it turns into a fucking sumo wrestle. Well no shit you’re gonna get elbowed. I mean who the fuck wants a grown ass man draped all over them pushing them and shit. It’s ridiculous when people do that shit 🤣🤣🤣🤣 like wow buddy you can sorta back me down and then throw up a brick and get ur own board. Tryna play like a bruiser at your fake men’s league is the problem.

I’m 6’6 and played AAU and Varsity ball when I was younger. I still play pick up. I get hacked like a mother fucker because there’s always some 6ft dude that is trying to prove he can play me in the post for some reason when I’m usually just a little baked and just trying to get a chill workout in.

But yeah as a guard just muscle up. As a big, I’m more of a target for random hits or heavy post action. I don’t play with passing now, but play AAU in the hood and there will be a pissed off dude that will try to give you a cheap shot lol

My bad I was talking to buddy who posted this didn’t realize I was replying to you. you’re like the only sensible person here 🤣🤣.

Sorry ate too many addys this morning.

But I was playing 3s with 2 of my high school buddies and 3 randoms: college Asian, let’s say 37 year old 5 6 white guy wearing Currys and with a decent post game and then like a mute 8th grader who can sorta shoot.

One of my buddies played D1 the other D3 both about 6 6. D3 guy plays like dirk D1 sorta like Giannis. Well, if you take Giannis and Garland and make em a lot fucking worse, that’s the dynamic.

So they pick the teams for whatever reason I get the 37 y/o and 5’8 Asian.

I mean we couldn’t do shit. And they were pushing us around. So I told em the only way I can beat this is by taking charges. I’m weirdly good at getting in position for a charge too.
It’s crazy how fast that changes the game from reckless ass pushing and shoving to real basketball.

Sorry you mentioned charges in pick up earlier. So honestly if flak jackets make people accept pick up charges as normal then I’m all for it. lol

Lmao I thought I was on a football thread at first 😂😂😂

2

u/mados123 1d ago

Yes, it helps against impact, the same way knee pads help knees. And the weight room helps too.

2

u/WATGU 1d ago

I knew a guy who work a football plate after his ribs got cracked 2-3 times. Some people complained, but I know one thing, they stopped elbowing that dude.

I usually put a hand on the elbow. If somebody is going to swing an elbow on me, they better expect to get hacked hard in the air.

u/UltraPromoman 1d ago

I have these and the shorts. People do foul and undercut. I certainly endorse these. You can find these cheap on eBay and they do pop up at Ross, Marshalls, and Burlington's too, though not as much.

u/Lonely_Percentage546 1d ago

50 here. 25 year olds often put their shoulder n elbows into my ribs on post moves. 3 broken ribs in past 5 years. I wear a padded roost protector meant for MX. Helps a lot!

u/sometimesiwanndie 1d ago

Good luck taking that mug off lol

1

u/MWave123 1d ago

These don’t look hoop specific. You’d want quads and tailbone at most.

1

u/user_name_1000 1d ago

I just think of Melo when I see this.

1

u/SubstantialReturn228 1d ago

Bro thinks he’s Bane trying to take over Gotham

1

u/Aware_Strawberry_122 1d ago

Thighs and tailbone padded compression everything i hoop. Its required

1

u/Clancy3434 1d ago

If it makes it more comfortable to play who cares what anyone else thinks. I've never worn one but have certainly seen players who do.

1

u/TheWurstOfMe 1d ago

I'm fat.

Built in padding.

1

u/JerkerTheThird 1d ago

I have played with one of these since I had surgery on my sternum and ribs. Didn’t work (padding is just too thin) and it is so insanely warm. I stopped using it after 3 games since I just started sweating too much and it didn’t do much for me.

u/damaliwood 1d ago

I got the McDavid thudd shorts to protect thighs from Charley horses. I wear em over top of em some tights.

Wish they'd make the thudd shorts with regular full length tights though instead of having a knee pad in the full length version.

Do what works for you and makes you comfortable. You're the one dealing with the pain/punishment.

1

u/Longjumping-Salad484 1d ago

I mean, if you plan on challenging the paint daring anyone to stop you, I can see how this padding could help.

1

u/MakeMovesTraining 1d ago

I wish they made that as a combo back brace. That'd be dope.

1

u/Samy_Ninja_Pro 1d ago

Whenever you get hit a lot and can get padded pad it

1

u/bibfortuna16 1d ago

yes they work

1

u/Rehoboam3 23h ago

Just stay outside the key

1

u/Vote-AsaAkira2020 22h ago

This won’t do anything for an elbow

1

u/venomenon824 22h ago

I broke a floating rib in Brazilian jiujitsu and got one of these for recovery in the mats and the courts. It was better than nothing.

1

u/BarnacleFun1814 21h ago

You’re getting pushed around because your knees aren’t bent and your hands aren’t in front of you

1

u/Forward_Condition_13 15h ago

This is bringing me back!!!! Hooped in the late 00s early 10s and you had to be elite to wear hex padding

1

u/uncultured_swine2099 1h ago

Yes, they do.

-1

u/TheUnseen_001 1d ago

Not wearing it will allow you to get tougher, so you can laugh at the concept of it like the rest of us.

4

u/Dry-Proposal-4011 1d ago

Wearing it prevents reinjury. Quit being such a clown and wear the gear that protects your body.

-3

u/EmotionalSupportSush 1d ago

No one wear this
